I think Atlas is bad because most respectable Halo players realize Bungie.net is trash and almost everybody who submits something at that site has a smug "I dont want recon but I really do attitude"

MLG got it's own playlist because it's a very different playing experience. Not only do they have their own foundry maps but they've also tweaked the existing maps, gametypes, and play mechanics. On top of all of that the MLG is probably the most organized Halo organization with not only a website but also many MLG sanctioned events. The MLG playlist was not added because people bitched about it in enough volume that Bungie or Shiska became overwhelmed and just had to add it. It was added because it brought a lot to the matchmaking experience and is controlled by a very organized and polished people (those in charge of MLG Halo, not the embarrassing MLG forum goers).

Forgehub is a great resource but doesn't have the organization necessary to control a playlist of their own.

Instead of a forgehub playlist I believe it'd be much more appropriate to have something labeled "Community Playground" where maps that may be good enough for general matchmaking are placed and tested. These sorts of matches could be for no exp and counted as custom games if for whatever reason they want to further distinguish them from matchmaking. The maps would be gathered from forgehub, other community sites, and Bnet. Feedback could be gathered after a month or so based on veto data or just forum feedback.

I'm not a forgehub user so I don't care if their maps are instituted with other maps. I'll only be content as long as we see some user created maps allowed into matchamking. Like Vhfive said, whats the point of having forge if none of it's creations are allowed to be played.

Also, don't forget most MLG forgers are forgehub users themselves. Forgehub is probably the most well organized forge group out there with their own regulations for maps and a community hierarchy that is somewhat intelligent in their approach towards their users. While they might not have the userbase like MLG to keep it's playlist habitable I don't think any user created playlist could generate alot of players either so it wouldn't matter if forgehub doesn't have the drawing power as MLG does.

It only makes sense to allow them to control their own playlist so players who do play their maps have a central place to go to help tweak and allow input. Allowing Bungie to greenlight into what forged maps into that playlist would be tricky atmost. We've already seen how giving power to Shishka results ->

I'm sure Shishka is desperately searching for a solution which'll stop random forum posters from saying mean and hurtful things about him. It probably keeps him up at night...

I seem to remember the whole BDF coming to his rescue when their were 'Fire Shishka' avatars.

Yeah, it's really kind of pathetic when you look at the extents to which some people will criticize others for giving Shishka flak. We're the goddamn Halo 3 community. How do some people expect the game to improve without criticisms?

I would like this. I don't know how many here have played on Geminie, but I would like some feedback on it. There isn't a better way to playtest a map than to have it be put in matchmaking.

The only problem with this is one thing: how is the selection process going to work? Who is going to decide which maps be put in matchmaking?

It should be as simple as Shishka researching the maps out there, maybe playtesting them within Bungie headquarters, and then choosing the cream of the crop. At least it seems like that would fall under Shishka's job title. I could be wrong.

i think this the big problem with this "playlist". it can't be shishka because it's to big of a job for one person
which is why i think we haven't seen this yet
. and i dont think bungie is just going to hand out something like playlist control to outside of their company. so unless bungie wants to hire more people for this specific job
not gonna happen but i am available ;)

Thought I'd toss in an update on my map in progress.

Last update looked like this:

69119842-Full.jpg

It's my first attempt at a small map, so it's taking lots of time as I learn lessons you guys probably have down by heart. It started with three premises: a high central platform, a kill ball in the center to make falling perilous (aka a volcano), and elevated bases on the opposing walls. I've since rebuilt or overhauled everything but the central platforms several times, just lots and lots of iterations. On the way, I nuked two of the three original core ideas: the kill ball in the center and the highest platform, which is now relegated to the status of a chandelier; it was just too high.

The latest pass was to balance out the high and low levels, and provide reasons to take both the high and low roads between the bases. It works pretty well in the current incarnation.

I'm finding it's very, very hard to convey the layout and different levels in screens - it plays more intuitive than it looks in screens - so these shots may not help, but here goes. A few people have observed it has elements from The Pit and Assembly (both unintentionally).

V30.jpg

The base:

V30baseview.jpg

Starting base is split between two levels. The lower is just a platform right now, there's still a lot of detail to add yet. From the top base there are two slots to drop down in the back, and from the lower you can drop down a central chute to the floor. So if one team has control of the central platform and has the guys in the base pinned, they can drop out the back to safety. (Assuming they're not trying to defend the flag.)

There's basically three ways into the base. The first is through (or over) the tunnel bridge on one side. I had originally put up a bridge on both sides, but that eliminated any reason to take the low road - it meant every way in was on top.

The second is to get to the lower level and drop a grav lift, which spawn inside each base, to go up the holes in the floor.

V30grav.jpg

The third is to jump off the central platform. This part of the map is crucial to control because of both the height advantage and the ease of jumping into the enemy base (but not back out to the top).

V30base.jpg

There's three ways up to the central platform: from the base via the bridge, from the sides and from below (via a permanent grav lift). You get to the lift via an offshoot of the tunnels on either side.

V30low.jpg

I still need to finish the bottom of the bases and build the spawn locations in the opposing corners, but I think it's about 85% done now. Then a touch up pass to tweak stuff that's not lined up just right.

There are a lot of maps out there. Going through and picking the ones that you think will be the best, see if you will think it works in a matchmaking playlist and putting it in is a great amount of work.

Plus more complaining could result it you choose a map that isn't suited at all for matchmaking and leave up there for God only knows how long.

Ghal: Lookin' good.

wtf?!?!?!

isn't this what shishka should be doing right now and the main reason why we are discussing the lack of forged maps in matchmaking??

No no Shaniqua only has to look at the top rated or top viewed maps not ALL of them.
Ratings can't always be trusted, and that wouldn't be fair to the people who put time and effort into their maps but never see community admiration of it by just putting it up in their fileshare.

If there was a "theme" for each set of maps that appear in this playlist... Say, BTB maps, remakes, etc: that could make searching for maps a lot easier.

Can't wait to play Infinite Money and Sandbox Skull in Matchmaking!

I've got a solution to that. Why don't we make it so that anyone who wants their maps included in Matchmaking make them conform to a set of standards, and then they can submit them for review. It would cut out all the dross and it would mean that Shishka and co only get to see the best submissions to choose from.

+1

the only problem is shishka could probably still put terrible maps in the playlist

let gaf pick the maps

You could still be looking at potentially hundreds if not thousands of submissions. It wouldn't be like looking through a screenshot contest.

Holy shit you guys are pathetic. Do you really not have anything better to do than spend your weekend crying about how "Shishka" is responsible for the videogame holocaust? Get a life for fuck's sakes.

All the MLG maps have had to go through Bungie/Shiska as well. Of course MLG only submits a very select number of maps but they don't just fly from MLG HQ and straight into matchmaking.

That shit is pathetic and those that supported or use that avatar are an embarrassment to this community. I couldn't think of more inappropriate or childish behavior that just screams "we're stuck-up dicks that don't want any Bungie involvement on GAF". It's one thing to disagree with Shishka or Bungie but it's something totally different to petition for someone to be fired. It doesn't take some "Bungie Defense Force" to see that; it simple takes a mature and rational person.

The entire point of a playlist like "Community Playground" is that Shiska and the rest of Bungie wouldn't have to spend as much time making sure the maps are suited for MM and really no amount of internal testing can compare to that of a couple thousand people playing the maps. People playing in this playlist shouldn't expert perfect maps either because the playlist exists outside of MM and it's sole purpose is to weed out flawed maps.

That's what I'm trying to say. You think that that would be what he should be trying to do. At least it makes sense that this is what his job should include. Maybe he has a lot of other things he does that leaves no time for that, and if so they should hire someone to do/help with that part.

So? That's no excuse. And just because there's a lot of maps out there doesn't mean that you have to do every single one. That is retarded thinking. Pick something like 8 or 10 maps, playtest them for a week or two, then select the ones that stand out and put them in a playlist. Or just save the ones that are good when you find them, and do a monthly playlist that includes 4 or 5 forged maps. Then every month shuffle in new ones.

I don't think anyone here is "crying." We are just throwing out ideas of what we think is bad/could be changed to make the matchmaking experience better for Halo 3. And I would hope that no one here is blaming Shishka entirely because we don't know for sure if it is his fault, and if he even has the power to do the things that we are asking for.

So you just pick eight to ten at random?

There is still a process of actually picking the maps to be put in the playlist. Will they have to meet some sort of criteria? Will you only have a limited amount of time to submit a map for consideration?

Sometimes you are so dumb that I smash little kittens.

I'm not saying that it has to be 8 or 10 maps. I'm just giving an example of something they could possibly do. And they wouldn't be chosen at random. Just like many of us do here, we scour the internetz for cool maps. It's not very hard.

Actually when employees fail to do their job well its generally best for the employers and consumers to let go of that person. Speaking in a strictly business sense. Not that I'm for firing Shishka but they defintely should hire me as help since I'm fucking awesome. :D

I'm just talking about the pages upon pages of demonizing Shishka. It's just so ridiculous, and it's unfortunate that some people can't discuss matchmaking flaws in a contructive manner without constant personal attacks about how one person does his job, when they have little to no actual perspective on what that person does and is trying to do.

Atlas

What I'm unclear about is how the 6(?) sandbox map variants were chosen. TTL Askan's map Tundra was completed well before the maps were available to almost anyone so maybe he was tasked with coming up with a map for MM. We'll chalk that one down as a special circumstance.

The other two maps that have been revealed are Spooky House by Shay who may've worked with Bungie (and is also the making of the yet to be revealed "Cubed") and Plurality made by Shishka himself. If I had to guess I'd probably say the other 2 maps will be from within Bungie but I hope they keep the pace up after the map pack hits XBL.

I agree. I don't support any of the negative Shishka remarks either. If people left that stuff out of their posts people may actually listen to them.

Using forge-hub I've found some tips that have helped me become a lot better at forging. I've got an early version of a map I'm making on the regular level, I'll post some screens when I've got some progress beyond the bases.

They are. I'd look at that list more as a "hey, let's see what us gaffers can make" more than a list of maps that should go into matchmaking. Some may be good enough but hopefully Atlas will become the place to look for those.

Also in my File Share. Played it with the author earlier today. :)

Rise looks pretty pimp. Especially the area below the sniper with the horseshoe and pillars. I do remember playing an earlier version and getting erased by players that got to the upper perches. I kept spawning facing another player or facing the edge of the back corners. I'm easily confused. By the time I would get my bearings, I'd be under fire.

I'm looking forward to running through some user created content that is worthwhile.

Too bad I have no idea when that will be... (Mythic release date please?)

I never got a change to playing Rise until a few days ago. (I didn't know the name of the map at the time) I played it, along with a bunch of other maps, with DevinOlsenn and a bunch of other guys. I got to say, it was a lot of fun. I just found out that map was Rise v2 :lol, great job.

It's definitely a WIP and it's definitely not ready to be analyzed for MM purposes (if I decide to pursue that route). That upper area is a particularly tricky thing I've been trying to balance. I am also a whore for complex jumps and multiple routes to maneuver so it takes a while to get all of them down.

Hopefully after finals week is over I'll get some time to tweak it some more and also finish Beaver Creek.

Unfortunetly, the killballs in Mage are still there and you spawn inside of them at the opening of the game.

EazyB's Rise confused me aswell. I also noticed that the team on the perches dominated the map. It's still a good map, but I just suck at it.

I'm still convinced that Sanctum is a gift from heaven. I mean, I frakking

love that map. I'm pretty sure it's past testing and is fully functional for all gametypes

Oh, I wasn't spawning in them. I could make the jump from the ledge to the corner wall, drop down into the Killball area, and hang out without dying.

Sanctum is in my File Share too. I don't know what that means in the grand scheme of things, but it's definitely there!

i think the biggest issue is that when a team controls the top it is hard to kick them off and easy for them to dominate the shit out of you :P. also your whoriness (sp?) for complex jumps really shows. maybe a little too much. take out some of the jumps (def. not all just some) and put ramps making the map a little less complex. do this and you have a great map
these are just my personal impressions take them or leave :P

Oh, I see what you mean. When I played the maps, we were having intense 5v5 slayer games, so I wasn't really focussed on breaking the map. All I know is that at the start of the match, my entire team spawned into a killball, along with half of the other team. I havn't seen Bladed post in a while, but maybe he is working on a fix?
