When game was just a game, everyone played and finished diablo and diablo 2.
These were games you could play, finish an then play again.
Games now are gaas crap and diablo 4 apparently only "starts" after you finish it. Ain't nobody asked for that. Who seriously asked for that and not another diablo 2

Blizzard literally has a patent, research documents and an entire department dedicated to exploit psychlogical tendencies in gaming. Coindentally, a year or two after its inception, Overwatch with loot box and WoW cash shop released.

It's like a doctor diagnosing you with severe obesity and prescribing you with doritos and mountain dew on the daily because he sells those on the side.

I don't really disagree with what he's saying, even if some may not like the way it's pieced together. In my personal experience of playing free to play games, especially ones with a decent amount of content. I've seen plenty of "fans" talk about how there's nothing good, it sucks, etc. Even when the content drops are... well... pretty packed IMO, at least for me. So, they begin talking about the next one, and the latest one just dropped, lol. It's a cycle that I feel like rinses and repeats in different communities. I figured it could have something to do with younger generations, or people that just play TOO MUCH of said game. Or maybe both.

It certainly feels/looks like a lot of the fans are entitled and impatient.

Who'd have thought making games like casinos would drive customers to want more and more.............

Reap what you sow, if you cram loot boxes, MTX and cosmetics into games, change them weekly, no wonder you're customers have no patience.

I could play Halo 2 multiplayer on Xbox every night and not need brand new content all the time. I could just hop on and play for hours and be super satisfied. The reason for that is because the game was fun.

The problem here is greed and most big publishers just want as much money as possible and quickly. I don't think they care about delivering a genuinely decent product anymore. Outside of players over consuming I'm not sure what else has led to this weird FOMO inspired gaming trend, it's crap.

AAA gaming is honestly the worst these days because of live service shit.

The entire hobby kind of seems built on patience. Basically just hyping up the next big release that we wait half a decade or more for these days. Patience kind of comes with the territory.

This dude is just bitching or talking about live service stuff? Don't care. Blizzard is literally the guy in the hot dog costume meme talking about that shit. We're all trying to find out who did this...

There two big games at the moment (WoW + D4) are the wrong kind of GAAS games. They're require developers to lay down track fast...and aren't built to be played endlessly.

That's a recipe that leads to players going "I don't want to play this again. I want to be given new content to rip through, therefore I will go on Twitter and complain."

Sandbox design is the way to go.

Wait till you make gamers get used to not buying games and how that will negatively effect gaming as whole like nothing else before it.

You thought MTX is the worst thing that have happened to gaming? you in for a big surprise lol.

I think it’s quite telling, especially with how this year has gone.

Zelda, BG3, RE4R, Spider-Man 2, Super Mario Wonder, Hogwarts, Star Wars Jedi, Alan Wake 2 all timeless Sp experiences thriving due to their quality.
Meanwhile, major GaaS like Destiny are starting to wane and now devs can’t comparatively keep up with actual good new content.

The best game design (Fortnite, Roblox, Minecraft) are being flocked to because every time you boot them up, you get wonderful new experiences. People naturally gravitate towards nutritionally dense experiences.

What’s always so new about Fortnite? You shoot at each other build. Remove all of the microtransactions, and have a small selection of generic characters and I guarantee people would stop playing.

They have no one to blame but themselves. They create a hamster treadmill on purpose, hire psychologists to addict people, and then complain that their customers are addicts.

If they decide to make timeless gameplay that is fun and enjoyable, and a narrative that comes to a satisfying conclusion and gives the player meaningful in game rewards and story closure, then they don't want things every day.

They correctly point this out in the article.
You're god damn right

Titanic was called the Ship of Dreams, and it was. It really was.
A lot of people nowadays have very short attention spans, and I believe most of it is related to the rise of smartphones.

So.. I blame Apple. Although quite honestly we're all to blame for it in some capacity.

Compare the diversity of engagements in Fortnite, with all the sandbox items and player intelligence + creativity and compare them with the mundanity of a Destiny enemy, who behaves in extremely limited and repetitive ways.

Fortnite exploded in popularity during its first 2.5 months when no MTX were in the game. It's Chess.

What quality? the models you try to emulate you can't even correctly assess about what they do well and don't and which to take. From what I've experienced, none of your content has any lasting design from the beginning nor the thought put into it to hold up and then you ignore your core fans to chase the demographic you talk about. No respect for your core customer and probably no proper resource allocation for your teams.

He is not wrong.

As a Destiny player I remember community bitching about "content droughts" all the time and that was the reason why Seasonal concept was introduced.

But because of that Bungie went to other extreme and they turned whole game into FOMO fest and people bitched about that.

So it is "damned if you do, damned if you don't"

I agree that it's player's absurd expectation the one being wrong here. Games with absolutely solid gameplay loop get unfairly smashed by players because they complete the battle passes within 1 week and have to wait another 3 months for new content like... Man, that's a YOU problem, most people don't play 16 hours a day the same game.

There are even cases where devs try to appeal to these people putting some daily quests but then many players will start playing in ways they're not used to, basically trolling matches, in order to complete the quests.

ADHD is strong in today's players...

Mike Ybarra kinda creeps me out, maybe its too much botox but after watching blizzcon they only have themselves to blame.

They made all their games GaaS

It seems catered to career gamers (youtubers) which then trains the kids to only tune in when content drops.

Meh, depends on the game. For a mp game like COD it's a nice incentive to have new unlockables on a regular basis.

For sp it's a non-issue, since I'd expect everything to be in the game the moment I buy it (DLC excluded).

Hate it all I think.

I just think of Battlefield which often changed things for the worse and turned most of the player base into diligent daily homework players. Just playing a team game to complete their BF homework. The fun of the game for me was the teamwork and strategy of trying to beat the other team. But I was a unicorn. Most players only cared about completing their homework

I think it's not just the greed of the game companies influencing the constant content but the youtube career gamers who can never have enough "content" to show off and talk about given they might play 8 hrs a day.

He's clearly talking about GaaS, which I run far away from at the mere mention. I want a great, single-player game with lots of content, and the option for multiplayer. I do not want a game that has cheap content just to get me to "log in" every day. I couldn't care less about that kind of content and I'll never support it.

We really dont, look at the longstanding PC games - they don't have content every day, every hour.

If you make the gameplay loop exciting enough on its own, people will play it. If you make your gameplay loop exciting only when you have the latest and greatest then you create a wave chase and players will always overtake the creators.

Give players enough tools they can have fun themself . blizzard nowaday too controls over their game ,force players playing the game their way , not allowing mods .

Hey the players is having fun , lets neft that shit . Hey the players doing some creative stupid shit , lets remove that shit .
