Overwatch has made over one billion dollars, hits record MAU, more stats

Ask me about the moon landing or the temperature at which jet fuel burns. You may be surprised at what you learn.
No, I wouldn't. Which is why I didn't. Oasis does count as 3 maps however, because they're all separate *maps*.

They're not the size of full maps though. It would take you exponentially longer to run through an escort map like Route 66 or Numbani versus each part of Oasis.

They're all part of the same map. Otherwise Oasis University would not be played at the same time as Oasis Gardens.

Counting them separately is disingineous considering they're nowhere even close to the size of actual maps.

Have a few hundred hours in the game, still play fairly regularly, come back in force for each event. Toss a $10 their way at the end of each event.

Overwatch is the only game I've EVER had where I've paid money for microtransactions, which by default I guess makes them the 'best microtransactions ever', which I understand to some (and before overwatch, me) sounds like "the best plague ever".

Some key things about what Overwatch does:

-Cosmetics only, zero pay-to-win unless you consider looking pretty awesome as winning
-Large variety. 24 characters, most having 70+ items each.
-Pretty great art design for those rewards
-Only a single box with a straightforward method of acquisition, and a single currency. If there was like a 'platinum box' and a 'gold box' that all had different requirements, it'd be kind of whack. I also don't like that Heroes of the Storm has 3 different currencies or whatever.
-Well-tuned reward drip. Not so frequent that they don't feel special, not so rare that they feel unattainable.

The biggest downside is the duplicate aspect of the system, but I think the elegant simplicity of the single loot box, the production values around the opening animation and the rewards, and the frequency with which they are earned manage to outweigh that for now.

I'm not so sure that the Auction House for D3 was Blizzard's idea as it was Activision's idea. At least, that's what I'd like to think. :'(

I'm guessing they mean in terms of the partners they're signing.
If it's taking this long it must be a step above any of their other ongoing esports efforts. Wonder if they're trying to make it into something actually resembling the big pro sports leagues.

The maps are actually good though so no complaints here. These other games pump out 15 maps through season passes and only one is even good enough to be considered decent.

Quality > Quantity

If Eichenwalde was so good they wouldn't have had to go back and change its layout.

Edit: Anyhow I'm not here to nitpick. Overwatch is still phenomenal and one of the best online multiplayer game around.

I don't think I've ever stuck with a multiplayer game as long as Overwatch. The way they roll out content for it works wonders. I always do my arcade boxes, and even if I kinda slow down in general, a new character/map/event will bring me in for a week or two.

I even bought lootboxes once as a gift for someone else. It's a good game. I like how it's full of cartoon weirdos instead of generic soldiermen or edgy 90s comics rejects (well, excluding Reaper)

Its probably taken years off my life. When you are dominating and a team member quits mid match to play BO3. FML.

I'm addicted to it though.

I've waited so long to try and get into Overwatch... I now feel like there is no point in trying to get into Overwatch lol.

In all honesty, I just rarely find time for highly competitive MP games these days. A shame given that TFC/TF2 are my two all time favourite MP games. Overwatch just seems a bit daunting with all the characters and trying to learn it all in amongst what are probably millions of skilled know-it-alls given how long the game has been out.

Same thing happened with me and Destiny. Played it a bit at the start, left it, then never went back feeling I'd never catch up.

Congrats Blizzard on the success.

As for loot boxes, at least it has remained cosmetic, but EU/US law, please follow China into better gambling regulation.

It's fascinatingly interesting to see Overwatch do so well in an area where Team Fortress 2 lost steam over the course of years

OW is probably the first game since Minecraft to pull in whales in terms of lootboxes. More then cod

Will be interesting if it goes the distance on ps4 and Xbox like WOW

What's OW business model in Asia ?

PC Bangs (places you go to play on PCs provided by a cafe type gaming location) sometimes have stuff like you buy a coffee to play for 4 hours or whatever and the games are licensed to the institutions.

As a not really a FPS kinda guy i wouldn't call it daunting at all, sure knowing the ins and outs of characters help but it's a game i would categorize as pick up and play for the most part.

If only they had the resources to put out meaningful content in a timely manner...
And yeah, this. With this info out in the open people who defend their slow pace of new content (even just non-timed skins of which there have been 4 so far in total, 2 of them are color swaps) have no leg to stand on.

I usually buy 25 loot boxes every event, except for the last one i didn't really care for anything.

We desperately need more maps though. Or modes.

With all this profit, Blizz should be able to really blow out story mode in Overwatch2!

There's probably not gonna be an overwatch 2 for a long time. A very long time.

What is unique about overwatch is this regard?

I may be remembering wrong but in South Korea you can pretty much create an account and play Overwatch in a PC bang(is that how it's written?) for a small amount of money. That's why South Korea has(or had) a big problem with cheaters. If you got your account banned you could create a new one in a few minutes.

Examples which include....?

Rainbow 6 Siege has 6 free DLC maps now with a 7th coming within the next month or so and all of them except Favela have been well received.

Not to mention games which actually do have paid maps, the Halo DLC maps were usually pretty good back when I played and all of the Battlefield DLC maps are pretty great as well.

Well deserved. Haven't bought a single lootbox and have all the cosmetics I'd ever want anyway. I'm thankful other people are funding my free content.

Of the course the maps and characters are going to be slow to release. Do people think balancing maps and characters is some easy task that takes no effort? This isn't CoD where that doesn't matter, no shit it takes awhile.

What do you even mean by this?

More money isnt going to speed up design, testing and iteration.

They could probably hire a bunch of interns to do grunt programming work to speed it up but thats not how Blizzard does things which they have stated a thousand times already.

Great game but I want to know the percentage behind the loot boxes and I think any game with loot boxes should be rated M.

Cool, it's my problem. As I've gotten older I have less and less patience for getting my ass kicked and/or needing to go through hours of letting a team down to learn what I'm doing.

I just peer into any modern FPS game, see the "kids" and skilled adults tear everything up and go, nope, back to SP games.

Considering everyone plays Overwatch, including anyone I know, even more so than Destiny, I keep saying one of these weekends I'll get it and jump in. It seems the closest thing to TF that isn't TF. I abandoned TF2 as Valve starting arseing it up with a bajillion collectables, drops, keys and everything else.

In saying that I poured a stupid amount of hours into PvZ GW, but for whatever reason PvZ GW2 never really clicked for me. Uncertain if it's still heavily populated. I think starting to introduce too many characters in it put me off a bit.

edit: Talk about GW2 just completely dying on GAF lol ~ http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1187378&page=50 Dat Overwatch effect which destroyed many MP games.

I buy 50 loot boxes every event. Overwatch has saved me a ton of money on games that I would otherwise be buying, if I wasn't addicted to OW.

This is what I used to say when I was playing WoW. But that cost 12.99eur monthly, not a full game price.

It's good to hear that an inclusive game that plays widely different from any other FPS.

Also I'm okay with lootbox because it's a nice simple system.

If activision had no input the game would not be done so well. Several parts of Acitivision helped Blizzard. Soldier for example is a Treyarch assisted character.

Aren't they also required to show the percentage chance for lootboxes?

4 maps. Oasis has 3.

Not that I wouldn't be happy to see them release more maps in a timely manner. I'm surprised the ratio of new maps to new characters hasn't been higher.

Oasis counts as a single map.

They also added Antartica and they also worked on and released two PvE events.
