That's awesome. I'd like to think part of the reason for its success is its availability across all platforms. =)

Also, sexy sells.

Love playing the game but hate playing it on console someone buy me a pc reeee

And buying boxes is odd to me, especially at the launch of an event, unless you are a streamer or something. Or just have money to spend and want a skin early.

Grats to Blizzard. After not releasing a new IP in over a decade, Overwatch is a worthy addition to Blizzard's portfolio. Can't complain about the loot boxes either. They have zero impact on gameplay, the new character designs are wonderful and it has allowed them to deliver fairly steady content releases since the game released. Can't wait to see what's next for OW.

Taking advantage of gambling addictions and a slow drip of maps. Like it's gross enough they have the loot box business but at least release some more content when your stacking cash like that. Of course, Uncle Bobby wouldn't get his new gold plated swimming pool if they did that.

How much did Project Titan cost them? Obviously this is a massive success spun out from a pretty big loss, curious to see how much so though. I know it was rumored to have been 50-100 million, so that's a pretty significant turn around.

Good point, from Titan to this is pretty amazing success.

Nice, it deserves its success. I didn't like shooters until I gave it a try and played the beta, now it's one of my favorite games.

I like Overwatch, but I still consider it to be a pale imitation of TF2, which was more fun and better designed. I also put zero value in loot and loot boxes (I thought this largely ruined TF2 as well). Also, Blizzard art is still ugly.

All that said, I still think it's one of the best multiplayer games available currently.

I buy 50 loot boxes every event. Overwatch has saved me a ton of money on games that I would otherwise be buying, if I wasn't addicted to OW.
Thats how these games work, I use that same logic / reasoning with Destiny. For some people it's overwatch, some is halo, I'm sure some is mass effect 3 mp. Any game that offers continued support, service, dlc and cosmetic loot boxes, people will always dump money that could be spent on other games is now being spent on just that one game.

one thing hots does you can reroll your lootbox if you don't like it. but with how big OW is i see it will never come to OW.

OW's solution is to give you a pittance of game money if you get dupes, then eventually you can buy whatever you want (with holiday items only being available during that holiday and costing more, so if you're smart you save up your game money till the final day of a holiday).

The limited time events system is a cool trick to get people to panic buy more of their microtransactions and a lot

Examples which include....?

Rainbow 6 Siege has 6 free DLC maps now with a 7th coming within the next month or so and all of them except Favela have been well received.

Not to mention games which actually do have paid maps, the Halo DLC maps were usually pretty good back when I played and all of the Battlefield DLC maps are pretty great as well.

There's a caveat for Overwatch. Most of these other games are balanced around a single or small number of classes. Overwatch has a ton of wildly different heroes. Blizzard's ok with heroes being stronger on some maps than on others, but they have to be careful not to design a map where one hero has an overwhelming advantage over others.

I'm ok with that.
But Blizzard better get their shit together about the appalling lack of good Zaria skins.

Wished Blizzard would unlock Zarya's Summer games skin, the most superior cosmetic she has.
The Siberian Front skin is pretty good, but it would be nice to have one more skin option for Zarya.
Hell, I'd take a port of her HOTS skins.

Blizzard are good at that. It was basically the same for me except WoW. I spent $15 a month on a sub and never bought any other games for a good 8 years.

Although I just couldn't get in to Overwatch but I love that's successful. Blizzard doing what Blizzard does.

I buy 50 boxes every event so im not helping.

They still need to tweak the system like increasing the gold you get from dupes.

Getting a mere 200 gold for a legendary event dupe is insanity.

Deservers to make a lot of money.

One of the best shooters i played in the last decade. Haven't been so hooked since counterstrike 1.6 :)

Also Free updates! Go blizzard!

Uh that's not how it works. You wouldn't call Eichenwalde 3 maps because it has 3 points.

Yes, but neither would you compare Eichenwalde and Oasis because one is a singular map, the other is 3 control maps with a unifying theme :/

Anyway they've already been pretty vocal before about wanting to get content out faster, but explaining why they release maps/heroes so slowly compared to your LoL/DOTAs of the world etc. It's not like the skill ceiling for any/most heroes is so low that anyone has really mastered all there is, anyway :p

Damn, that's bananas. I'm hoping for a one year anniversary sale on it so that I can finally grab it for Xbox.

Just let me buy the Mercy Uprising skin please... come on Jeff. Come on.
Let me give you my money.

Ontopic: Congrats to the OW team!

i should start saving up my coins just in case. what if they unlock every event items just for that week? i need to be able to pick up hte lunar stuff.

I think overwatch is a well-made game, but personally I can't stick with it for too long. Like short bursts, I wouldn't play it every day for prolonged sessions. First because there's not many maps, but the problem I think is the meta. Some time ago someone posted the picked % for all the characters, and basically only half the roster is used. If we divide it for the various roles, basically you can choose between 2-3 characters for role if you wanna be "in meta"

I don't like loot boxes but I cannot deny they are most certainly money makers.

I don't understand buying cosmetic stuff for games at all. Like at all. Like spending money on loot boxes for random non-real items, it is just unfathomable to me. I felt dumb for spending free Google Play credit on hearthstone packs.

Maybe it's because I was raised poor. I can't fathom spending more than $30 on a meal at a restaurant either. But people do that too.

I'm not even that thrifty (another side effect of not having shit when I was a kid). There are just 8,000 other things I would rather waste my money on. Books. Movies. Electronics. A good meal out, even (just not too much). Stuff for my kids. Hell, real gambling would be better, at least you might win money in the end.

I'll typically plop down $10 each event. MAYBE $20, depending if I get the skins I want or enough gold to just outright buy it.

Oasis counts as a single map.

They also added Antartica and they also worked on and released two PvE events.

People always forget about ecopoint antarctica

The map is probably the most balanced 3v3 map in FPS history. And this comes from a person that played tons and tons of epic rocket arena 2 And 3 quake maps in the 90's

Such a fun game and I still have not mastered all the characters yet, so plenty to do still.

CTF is such a fun mode even if it's slightly unbalanced.

You obviously have other important things to do with your money. It's just not for you.

OW's maps are pretty bad

The problem isn't the maps, its that escort and attack/defend are terrible game modes compared to capture. The maps are fine, they just aren't as fun to play as capture maps because of the game mode. Escort can be fun, but only with six people in a party on mic.

Did you just say escort is a terrible game mode?

What the fuck
