If the vice-president at Naughty Dog says that there's no multiplayer in The Last of Us - Part II, then there's no multiplayer. It's that simple. Why else risk a blowback? If the multiplayer component internally is planned to release at a later date, don't you think they would've come out and said that instead of upsetting their fanbase?
Personally I think the single player- and multiplayer components became equally ambitious and they had to scale back. Now that doesn't necessarily mean the multiplayer component got canceled - I mean it could, but I don't think so - what I choose to believe, is that Naughty Dog has decided to make it its own thing, 'a standalone multiplayer game set in the world of The Last of Us', which will release 1-1½ years after The Last of Us - Part II.
2013: The Last of Us
2014: The Last of Us: Left Behind (standalone DLC)
2016: Uncharted 4: A Thief's End
2017: Uncharted: The Lost Legacy (standalone DLC)
2020: The Last of Us - Part II
- "Uncharted: The Lost Legacy is a new adventure in the series starring Chloe Frazer. The game will be offered as both a stand-alone title and as part of the Uncharted 4 season pass---though you only have until December 13th to purchase the season pass or the Digital Deluxe version of the game which comes with the season pass."

Does your uncle work at Naughty Dog?There's a high chance that multiplayer will be released as a stand alone game later. The Last of Us: Factions. Featuring pay-to-win, of course.
Sony is nothing if not predictable.Does your uncle work at Naughty Dog?
Just because they remove something doesn't mean something else gets extended.
This is amazing. It's usually "I wish they would drop multiplayer and focus on story" and now it's "But I want my tacked on multiplayer".
It was unexpectedly fun and addictiveI never played the multiplayer from the first game.
lol @ people not buying this because of the lack of the multiplayer. Multiplayer games market these days is oversaturated with what TLOU Part II MP component would have been or similar, pick any. On the other side, how many and how often SP games of this quality we get? Hint: not that many if any and definitely not that often. I'm glad they chose no MP approach and focused on bringing SP as good as it can get. MP could've been good for a while, but guys think realistically, it would be no competitor to Fortnite, Apex legends and all that other BR shite. Are any of you still playing Uncharted 4? No? That's my point.
I really gotta wonder how many of the people saying "not buying now" were ever really buying the game and just want to convince us not having a multiplayer mode is really going to hurt the bottom line of a Sony exclusive (just like it did Spider-Man, Days Gone, God of War... oh wait).
This should be added to the OP
I still play UC4 MP (over 1500 hours). Problem? Your point is null and void.lol @ people not buying this because of the lack of the multiplayer. It took almost 24h someone to respond to my comment and confirm they're still playing that. Turns out it's not so dull if you'll try to look a bit further your nose and don't just say it's still relevant because I'm playing, you're minority, no offense intended. It"s an industry that's trying to make as much profit as possible and you can bet your life they care about numbers a lot and if the numbers don't live to expectations, that's a no go.I still play UC4 MP (over 1500 hours). Not everyone is a casual that only plays mainstream games.
I still find players in both UC4 and TLOU MP.It took almost 24h someone to respond to my comment and confirm they're still playing that. You don't get it pal. These are not just some amateurs running business from a basement. They have departments with bunch of analytics that look at actual statistics and analyze where $ can be made and not just please few gamers that'll play the damn thing. You do realize we live in a time of capitalism and corporations that are all about numbers(the bigger the better), at least you should if you're more than twelve yo.I still find players in both UC4 and TLOU MP.
You're a casual, got it. Speak for yourself next time.
ps: The majority isn't always right.
In a case where a multiplayer mode is tacked on and isn't very good, it's annoying that resources were taken away from the campaign. This is amazing. It's usually "I wish they would drop multiplayer and focus on story" and now it's "But I want my tacked on multiplayer".
No, you don't get it "pal". You're being overly dismissive and disrespectful toward ND MP fans. You don't get it pal. These are not just some amateurs running business from a basement. They have departments with bunch of analytics that look at actual statistics and analyze where $ can be made and not just please few gamers that'll play the damn thing. What are you guys twelve? Think main reason for no multiplayer because of the focus on SP experience. My guess you still believe in Santa Claus, so go ahead and write a letter, maybe he'll bring you your present if you'll believe in him hard enough.

Multiplayer is the reason The Last of Us's gameplay is so praised and considered one of the best TPS in the market.Today I learned that The Last of Us 1 had a multiplayer mode....... And I owned it.
You learn something new every day.
Especially at 60 fps...Multiplayer is the reason The Last of Us's gameplay is so praised and considered one of the best TPS in the market.
It is fantastic.
Never said that , I said so they could focus more on the single player experience . Never said anything will get extended.Just because they remove something doesn't mean something else gets extended.
Fantastic‘You know Ellie, we really are the half of us.’
What I would do for a remaster of Uncharted 2’s multiplayer. Absolutely loved it. Liked 3 and 4 less because they started adding too much.Especially at 60 fps...
I'd give my firstborn to Cerny if they remastered UC2/3 MP as well.
