I do not get it… within the usual console size and price envelope we know this is not only next to impossible but also would get us less and less optimised games (the point of consoles is that they are out in the market with the same specs for enough years to justify the investment and use that knowledge to get a next generation semi custom SoC that properly addresses those issues and innovates… also console API’s would start getting thicker and thicker making the problem worse) while we chase the specs e-peen race.
It takes larger and larger HW performance increases to bring meaningful visual and game performance improvements AND at the same time we see it is costlier and costlier and it takes longer and longer to deliver semiconductor manufacturing large jumps to deliver the expected performance increases.
How is the answer “oh let’s release hardware more and more frequently, this will do it”. Why are we trying to take the worst of consoles (no internal modding of HW and SW) and the worst of PC’s (tons and tons of HW and drivers variety with thick abstraction layers). Do we look at issues with shader compilation stutters and think “I want some of that” on consoles?
