IGN revises its all-time list and has named Zelda: Breath of the Wild the Greatest Game of All Time

Speaking of revising lists, is there previous version? I would like to see how the ranks have shifted. In theory if they really do believe in their ratings, only new titles should be inserted at certain rank, and previous should shift upwards. Was this the case, or are they reshuffled entirely?

Ah I didn't notice they changed criterie, nevermind then.

I gotta say, these lists kinda made sense up to about Gen 7, but indies flooding the market and expanding the offer, coupled with AAA becoming more and more repetitive with many games borrowing from so many others, have made lists pointless. It’s now perfectly possible to be an avid gamer and remaining blissfully oblivious of so much stuff, while the top games of the past are so far away in time and tech that one could never be even accidentally exposed to them. There’s just too much stuff.

It's a fun game, no doubt. But, at this point, it seems like maybe it's the cool thing to do by saying it's the greatest game of all time (While also comparing every other open-world game to it for some reason). Overrated for sure.

Trying to think of any other game I’d say is the #1 best game ever made and I can’t think of one one off the top of my head tbh. BotW comes closest to being a perfect game for me.

RDR1 is up there but BotW beats it for me.

I don't get annoyed by "greatest" lists since they're all inevitably purely subjective, but I'll say that their list doesn't resemble mine, and for many that are on their list that also would be on mine, the ordering is pretty kooky to me, ha. IGN, you cray. :p

Every person/outlet has a right to their own top whatever list. I can't argue with theirs anymore than they can with mine. But good christ is it a joy to watch the meltdowns when these things come out.

There should be 2 different lists, historically minded lists and lists based on what plays best right now.

Absolutely disagree man, I replayed Super Mario World this year (well, in 2021) and had a ton of fun.

You point things like giving clues for puzzles or more generous saving systems, but for me those are the signs of a dumbed down game, not a well designed one.

And to say that almost every game on the PS2 is outdated... I wish there were more games with gameplay like God Hand man.

But hey it's fine to disagree, different strokes for different folks... Btw! If you are ever curious to see how a modernized ALTTP kinda game would be check out Hyper Light Drifter, combat is great in that game and so is the exploration.

Then how do they decide the list then?
That game was revolution. Then they go a head and put rd2 in their top 10. Even Skyrim didnt get to their top30, while GTAV did.

Well, Super Mario World, and 2D platformers in general, aged well because the gameplay of platforming in 2D space is similar to what it was back then. And Super Mario World came around when they finally got save systems.

The reason why there were no checkpoints or save systems before, was because they didn't know how to make them, not because of design. They would never make those games in the same way today.

But in Snake Eater, the game controls like you are 90 years old, it's really stiff and rigid to move the character. Isn't that outdated at this point?

Crying about what some site list posts is akin to crying or caring about some dipshit journalists "Game of the Year" awards. They literally mean *nothing* and by giving them more attention, it just shows that you are a fucking dweeb that cares more about what other people think than what you do.

What is almost perfect about it?

- The boss battles are reskinned and always the same
- The boss dungeons are reskinned and aside from the riddles part almost the same
- The weapon breaking system was already bad 10 years ago
- Korok seeds are the most useless gimmick of the game
- The world seems dead and soulless aside from the "Physics minigames"
- Putting 100 minigame shrines into the game didnt help it either.
- They took the lookouts from Assasins Creed and put them into the game.

There are so many Zelda games that even have a better "world" to play with.

Witcher 3 was almost a perfect game when it came to the open world.... but calling Breath of the wild an almost perfect game is hilarious and just not true. xD

The only great thing about Breath of the Wild is the "physics" and that only if you really care about that stuff and you want to goof around with it for hours without any reason.

And i normally love most Zelda games aside from Wind Waker and Breath of the Wild. Didnt play Skyward Sword yet.

I hope they will go back to the different real dungeons in Breath of the Wild 2 and less of the boring and bad copy and paste stuff.

I finished Breath of the Wild and never went back to it. Its really forgettable after the honey moon period is over.

Breath of the Wild has so much bad stuff that its almost atypical for a Zelda game.

Most of that list is ass. BOTW is fantastic. Not my personal choice, but I won't scoff at it being named the best.

Dark Souls and Bloodborne should both be top 10. Silent Hill 2 at 67? Chaos Theory at 69? Resident Evil 4 at 40? Nah.

Yeap, don’t get the outrage. It’s just a list from a website. I can’t imagine a top 10 without Quake, RE4 or (gasp!) Demon’s Souls (2009). So what. It’s my taste.
