In any situation, the diehard fans who accept everything, make excuses for everything and go around behaving like paid PR/marketing drones are their own worst enemy and they don't even realise it. Change happens when the biggest fans demand it. When sports teams do badly, the fans demand change from the team, the manager, the board, etc, they don't pop off and attack their rivals while allowing their own team to take them for a ride and get away with murder. It's lunacy.

This bit right here...... Sums up this guy perfectly⬇

With years of experience in hating plastic toys and games they are not interested in.

Part of the problem.

Been on this train since the last couple years of the 360. They went downhill and never recovered. The people they put in charge of this division are just not treating it properly.

How they got so much right in the first Xbox generation against the PS2 and then the early 360 generation against the PS3 remains a mystery after watching them trip all over themselves ever since.

I'm not sure Microsoft has ever gotten it right.

Xbox had issues too, specifically around their contract with Nvidia which prevented them from being as aggressive with pricing and also cut the life cycle of the device short (not to mention making future backwards compatibility problematic). And while it wasn't as bad as DRE (Disc Read Errors) on PS2, the XBox used three different DVD drive manufacturers which resulted in variable performance and DDE (dirty disc errors). As much as I love the Duke, that controller design was a mistake. On the plus side, the hardware was really powerful and Micorsoft used their know-how in developing Xbox Live. It helps that they charged for the service and limited it to broadband connections only. Sony on the other hand went the free route putting a larger burden on developers and also supported dial-up. Having Halo revolutionize the console shooter certainly helps, but all and all they duked it out with Nintendo for a very distant 2nd place. A good first effort.

Bonus thought: The Rare acquisition.

Sony opened the door to Microsoft with insane pricing and continued down the path of Kutagari's eccentric hardware design philosophies. Microsoft countered with a more powerful, less expensive and easier to develop system and built upon their Live service which was miles ahead of PSN. It helps that they launched a year earlier. The issue is they also delivered what has to be the most faulty console hardware the industry has ever witnessed. After denying failure levels were above industry standard (3%-5%), they eventually extended the warranties on the 360 to 3 years. Sony managed to overtake them late in the generation but they finished a close 3rd and showed tremendous growth from the original Xbox. They also found success with Kinect and with the 360 always being connected, they could data mine how their console was being used (TV Apps). Combine the billion they sank in correcting their engineering follies and how their late success with Kinect/TV Apps led to them misreading the market and sabotaging the launch of the One. All and all it's their most successful foray into Xbox.

Bonus thought: Mismanaging their Bungie relationship.

Random: It will be interesting to see how Series X does. I'm not sure they'll ever make inroads into Asian markets which I guess makes the 360 performance even more remarkable.

um no?

it's the console with most powerful hardware, best controller, good value subscription (gamepass ultimate), 4 generations worth of backwards compatibility, and exclusives i actually care about (halo, forza, flight sim, hellblade, state of decay, etc).

if they felt halo wasn't ready then i'm happy they've delayed it. otherwise i'm excited for my Series X to arrive in November. i'll have loads of games to play while I wait for Halo which isn't even the main game i want the xbox for lol.

They were young and hungry, filled to the brim with enthusiasts. It’s just turned ultra corporate, with suits that are focusing on the bottom instead of it being a passion project. It’s obvious to enthusiasts like us.

When MS started talking about engagement as GaaS as the right path, it was the beginning of what we see today. The VR flip flopping. The cross gen nonsense telling everyone it’s a good thing. Greenlighting the Halo showing....what proper game head that knows anything about gaming signed off on this?

And Gamepass and the inevitable B tier mobile style lineup that will adorn it in due time while cannibalising the rest of the market.

I’m very consistent on all this.

Imagine what a brilliant problem it would be where a proper gamer like myself were faced with PS==Xbox, which to chose? BOTH! 360 was magic in a bottle for me.

Despite the fact i am no xbox fan i was considering gettung both next gen consoles for game pass. Now i ve decided i will only get a PS5 as there will literally be no reason to get a XSX at launch.
Their incopetence annoys me for a very simple reason. Not for the xbox brand, but for our industry. In a world where xbox ceases to exist it means that Sony will play alone with no competition and that can only be harmful for ourselves.
I really hope team xbox can get their shit together, because i like Playstation more

The problem with a lot of these arguments, is that they’re happening on enthusiast forums, which are not inclined toward nuanced or non-hyperbolic point of views. Realistically speaking, yes Sony will likely do much better next gen in terms of unit, marketshare and software sales. This doesn’t somehow invalidate Microsoft’s existence in the console industry or business plans. Indeed for people such as myself who are completely unaffiliated and unattached to any console brand or manufacturer, Gamepass and other services, and being the ideal to play on to multi platform games—based on what we know at this time—is enough. A $299 next gen console (Series S) will most likely seal the deal for a number of other consumers. Now I’ve had every Sony system since the PSX—including the Vita, God bless—but nothing they’ve shown me appeals to my specific needs at the moment and the only IP of theirs I’m currently interested in is GoW, which I’ll likely purchase a PS5 for whenever that releases.

I’m getting an XSX for Gamepass and ESO. The end. A lot of people will do the same for Forza or CoD. I understand that isn’t what motivates the purchasing habits of most of us here, but we’re not indicative of consumer habits as a whole (though a certain momentum will inevitably be achieved by early adopters).

That said, the amount of justification necessary to explain to adults why one is making an adult decision with their own money is equally hilarious and exhausting.

So they are delaying one game? Big deal. Plenty of games have been delayed this year alone, big ones too. The value proposition for XSX is still there, play the best console versions of popular games on the most powerful console.

COD, FIFA, NHL, Cyberpunk, etc. are going to be the games that sell the most. And XSX will play those better than any other console.

One of the MAJOR problems they could have is the fact that they apparently won’t have any exclusives for 2 years. What legitimate reason do people have to go run out and buy an XSX when they have a proficienct PC, XBox One, S or X at home who will receive the same games which will presumably just look and perform a little worst? Honestly, casuals do not care about horsepower generally. If they did the mid generation consoles would of sold much better.

I honestly feel the cross generation games and “no console gamer left behind” philosophy is a bad idea especially if they want to move new hardware and truly harness the most out of their new architecture. Also, I still think to this day that XBOX exclusives coming to PC on day one was a big mistake and the beginning of the end.

The only thing that might help out even an iota is if their price is really enticing because Sony will most likely have about 95% of those third party games that casuals love as well and their proven first party. The difference will probably be minimal like XBOneX to PS4 Pro and not enough to justify potentially sacrificing exclusive games on PS5. Microsoft will probably be fine, but it seems like they are bringing over mistakes from the current generation which could damage them even more.

This is one of those points when you can tell a "fan" from a "fanboy".
No titles for two years, refusing to show games running on XSX, hiding a compromised machine, and the embarrassment of Halo followed by its hasty delay.

Who cares? If you think the Xbox looks shit just get a PS5 instead. It's the only sensible course of action.

When the Sega Saturn came out and turned out to be lame and overpriced, I bought a PlayStation. When I didn't fancy a PS2 and Halo looked amazing, I bought an Xbox. When PS3 was revealed to be an expensive joke I bought a 360. When Microsoft spectacularly fucked up last time, I bought a PS4.

Just buy the best machine you can afford. You really shouldn't be emotionally invested in some fucking brand, it's nuts.

I'm curious what the Series S/Series X consumer pitch is going to be. Microsoft's marketing team needs to be shot for how confusing their naming conventions have become.

Just buy the best machine you can afford. You really shouldn't be emotionally invested in some fucking brand, it's nuts.

Digital libraries complicate the decision. I guess you can say that Sony picked the right generation to win with digital purchases becoming so prevalent.

It's a video game company, you don't gotta do shit. You don't like the way they operate anymore, you go to the (much more competent) competition. In the end doing so equals to voting with your wallet, so MS either do something to bring you back or in the end they're making so little money on hardware that they just go third party and you get their games/gamepass on your PS5.

MS have been incompetent and just all round shit at delivering content for about 7 years now (and their track record before that was patchy at best). It's good that you're FINALLY coming to your senses, but the call to activism is pretty dumb when you just have another option.

Yeah, because you guys don't care. Just as long as the box you chose still exists that's good enough for you. There could literally be no games on the console besides Teletubbies and Madden and you guys would still be happy.
Microsoft seems to spend more money on paid shills than actual games.

Hey guys what is Fable? What is Everwild? Idk lmao. Maybe they should hire me. I seem to have enough experience.

I have been saying this for a while. If you really want something to improve (be it a game series or a company) you have to be vocal about it and also speak with your wallet. Of course that doesn't always guarantee change but burying your head in the sand and pretending everything is fine doesn't lead anywhere either.

Unfortunately (for MS and competition's sake) i have seen a lot of xbox fans choosing the later approach.

While I welcome the news that Infinite has been delayed because it clearly needs more time, As of now MS have no system sellers for when the console launch. They need to back track on "no Series X exclusive game for 2 years" and statement if they want to compete against Sony this coming Christmas.

They need proper exclusives. Only available on that console. Not that watered down bollocks where it can be played on PC or timed exclusive.
No idea where this „no Series X exclusive game“ sentiment comes from. They absolutely have exclusive launch titles, like that Tetris game, as evident by their November launch article.

OT: I always buy into both console platforms at launch (console + games to play) and I agree. Both have their pros and cons, but MS really drops the ball in terms of getting people to upgrade to the new gen and/or tries to push the new gen (holding it back with a focus on cross gen titles, which imho boils down to fear of adoption for the new consoles).

You either go all in on next gen or you don‘t, no inbetween (well, the inbetween would be backwards compatibility allowing you to continue your XB1 journey, which should be enough value proposal to get you to upgrade nowadays).

I think the problem with MS is that console gaming alone just isn't good enough for them. Ever since they had circus clowns on stage and announced Kinect, MS's been screwing over their fanbase in pursuit of a bigger fish.

Next gen is no different and they've literally told us they don't care whether you buy a Series X or not. Their sights are set on becoming the Netflix of gaming, or at least becoming the major Cloud platform provider for the industry as they're convinced consoles and gaming PCs will become obsolete. In the meantime MS is running with a quantity over quality approach as they care more about filling GP then selling their new Xbox.

I will also never understand why Xbox fans keep defending whatever MS does. MS had two events now and in both cases they've looked completely out of touch with their fanbase and had to publicly apologize for how bad it was. Its almost as if they don't want us to buy a Series X...

Corona virus happened. Everything is being affected. I cant be mad a them for delaying it.

I can’t blame them for delaying it, but I think it goes much deeper than the Corona. TLOU2, Ghosts of Tsushima, Persona 5 Royal, Nioh 2, Streets of Rage 4, FF7: Remake, Death Stranding(PC), Granblue, Doom Eternal, RE3 to name a few came out this year without too many problems to my knowledge.

You guys need to just be happy Xbox exists and stop complaining. Without it PlayStation would be more expensive. The games would be more expensive and they would stay more expensive for longer. The hardware would also probably be shittier and the amount of games would be less. You think Sony does these things to be nice? No, it's because there is currently another option.

No, that's how capitalism works. It's not a good vs bad. Corporations exist to make money and that's it. Just look at Nintendo. They have zero competition and everything of theirs is over priced and stays that way for years.

The thing, I’m insinuating that XBox fans want XBOX to continue to exist and be competent competition to Sony or a choice to make the industry healthier. With the mistakes they are making, it seems like they are being more detrimental than beneficial to the XBOX already tarnished brand. Gamers have the right to demand better especially when their hard earned money is concerned. When Sony and Nintendo are dominating the industry, Microsoft can’t afford to get complacent if they won’t to stay relevant.

You need to be grilling them to no end, these constant mistakes and the never ending buffoonery needs to sink in as being totally unacceptable. Don't think they're reading this stuff right now? You bet your ass they are, and I have no doubt a lot of people are getting reemed as what's being said on these forum is being rattled off in Zoom meetings.

Don't praise them for delaying a game, because they should have had the foresight as a multi-billion dollar division of a near multi-trillion dollar business to have a contingency plan in place to account for the potential of Halo not making the launch window.. Their incompetence has further harmed the brand, they further put at risk game deals for you, content, sales which lead to more investment and so on and so forth. If you can't even be confident in a brand you have invested in then how is anyone else supposed to be? Do you think publishers and developers are really going to want to do deals with them now?

They're in tatters, this is worse mismanagement than what took place at Sega and killed them... Sega was still putting out awesome games even as they were nearly bankrupt and being driven into the grave, and you want me to thank these rich executives and studio heads who can't even get one game lined up for their next-gen console? Do you have any idea how asinine that is?

All of you know I'm all about them, it's no secret that I bleed green and I practically have a shrine for them. With that being said though enough is enough, we are the last vestige of hope for them. We are their consumers, we are the ones who have the capability to hold them accountable, and many of you think the answer is to be in denial and act like they're doing us a favor?

Come on, it's been years.... This was supposed to be when Phil was supposed to shine, when we were going to have our coming back moment, and it's all been dashed away because they couldn't be bothered to come prepared with literally years to do so... I think I'm more disappointed in a lot of you than them, the excuses are intolerable.
To the point. Defending a company when it makes mistakes will NOT result in better decisions in the future. On the contrary.

The best launch of any console ever and we're supposed to be upset? Gaming isn't so serious man. I'll have access to thousands of games, 300+ Game Pass games with 100+ that are optimized for XSX, Cyberpunk, Valhalla, Scorn, The Medium, The Ascent, etc. What console launch compares to that? None.

They don't need to win to be a viable option and stay in existence. If you actually care about value Xbox is way ahead of PS. Not everyone has time/money to play every game worth playing every year and is happy with a few game purchases a year. Gamepass is fantastic value and if you can only afford 2 games a year why not get gamepass and have 200 instead. Just because they are not doing what Sony is doesn't mean it's wrong.

On the other hand, listening to screaming fanboys of the rival console on a gaming forum will definitely also not result in better decisions.
The point at which it is only about "screaming fanboys" has long been passed. But turning a blind eye to it is part of the problem. Obviously far too many are still "satisfied" - but in truth they haven't been for a long time, but believe that if they defend Microsoft with all their might, then everything will be fine. But that's not how it works.

There are so many mistakes coming from the past few weeks it's annoying as hell. Why mention that ray tracing won't be coming at launch for Halo: Infinite and will be part of an update and then days later delay the game? That is two separate moments that allow people to shit on Xbox. Why release Battletoads and Grounded before the Next Gen Xbox release date when you have doubts about releasing the system seller and will release a console with no first party game? Why announce the beta for Grounded the week after the Xbox show reel where more eyes were on it to see Next Gen stuff. Announce it then or in a few weeks around when PS have another info drop.

Man, that Halo gameplay trailer was originally shown privately months ago but if Coronavirus didn't happen they would have needed a trailer for E3. With E3 cancelled you still needed a demo for the Summer Xbox reveal to sell the console so how did they bungle the presentation so badly? Why rely on an old demo of your work? There is only so much you can blame on Coronavirus.

You're getting caught up in the anti-Xbox hyperbole that is so joyously generated and celebrated on this site.

Let's look at the facts...

One of the Xbox launch titles has been delayed, what is the confirmed day-one lineup for the consoles now?
People like to pull out all kinds of titles as 'launch-window' games, whatever that means, but as of August 7 Eurogamer confirms only the below for each console...

Confirmed day-one lineup for PS5
  • Fortnite
  • Yakuza - Like a Dragon
Confirmed day-one lineup for PS5
  • Astro's Playroom (coming pre-loaded on PS5)
  • Fortnite
It's a shame about Halo Infinite, but neither confirmed lineup is amazing. Let's see what's going to be available day one from both first and third-party developers before making any decisions about which is best.

Which is the better hardware?
On paper it's the Series X. Real world advantages, if they exist, will be seen in the head-to-heads. That power difference ain't going anywhere.

Which online service do you prefer?
I think most reasonable people who've used both will say Xbox Live. Add Gamepass and Xcloud to that and it's a compelling service.

What percentage of games that you play are third-party?
For me it's about 85%-90%. I want the console with the best performance in third-party games.

Where will third-party games play best?
The specs suggest Series X, we have to wait and see.

Before any specs were announced did all your hopes rely upon having the fastest SSD?
Mine didn't. It can't hurt, but it not a deal maker/breaker for me.

I think it's fair to say that neither console is a clear winner at this stage. Of course, if you spend too much time in the 'Next Gen' thread you may start to suffer from Shared Sony Delusion brainwashing. Don't get sucked in. :)

When Sony fanboys are saying Xbox has no games, they don't literally mean it has no games at all. Of course the Xone has had plenty of exclusives, it's just games like Crackdown 3, Bleed Edge, Minecraft Dungeons, Recore, State of Decay 2 etc. aren't anything to brag about. Now, if you look at the top 10 best selling games on ps4, almost half of them are critically acclaimed 1st party exclusives.

I do think that a focus on quantity doesn't necessarily mean bad quality, and I am enjoying the hell out of the smaller titles on GP like Ori, Gears Tactics, Grounded. However, if we're talking about buying a next gen console, I'm sure any Xbox fan would want to see some new AAA exclusive 3rd person exclusives of the same quality and critical acclaim we're seeing on Sony's platform. I mean aren't we hoping that Hell Blade 2 and the Medium will fit into that category?

You're right. It's hyperbolic. It just gets rather tiresome to hear both ends of the spectrum when neither is correct.

This is an extremely hyperbolic take with some ridiculous statements included.
because they should have had the foresight as a multi-billion dollar division of a near multi-trillion dollar business to have a contingency plan in place to account for the potential of Halo not making the launch window
If you sincerely believe that then your'e very disconnected to how the industry works and games are made. Companies don't keep AAA games in their back pocket as contingencies.
They're in tatters, this is worse mismanagement than what took place at Sega and killed them
They are not in tatters. I assume that's in reference to your perception of xbox as in, now you like them less. But in terms of their business with regards to Xbox, they are doing very well even with half the consoles sold of the competition.

After the studio acquisitions (which is a huge deal) their was some weird exceptions that Xbox was going to start pumping out games, but its doesn't work like that. It takes 3-4 years to make a good game, 5 years plus if your'e aiming for 10/10. Xbox couldve chose to make the games they got with the purchase of the studios exclusive to their console and they didn't because they are pushing a very pro consumer mantra atm.

And thats the point. Xbox is clearly not focused on 10/10 AAA games, atleast not now, and if thats what you want and is the no.1 most important thing to you , then Sony has got you covered for the foreseeable future. But both strategies come at a price: Sony consumer practices have gone out the window, they have become the kings of exclusive content buying up any shred of exclusivity they can, the recent spiderman debacle is a fucking joke. Xbox has chosen a different path, insane value of game pass, a clear attempt to push cross play/cross gen, they couldve held onto the games close to release through the studio purchases to bolster thier exclusive line up and they didn't.

Don't get me wrong , it's not the best look for Xbox right now but they certainly aint in tatters. Lets be real Halo needs a few extra months in the oven, its hard to sell the consumer on most powerful console ever when your flagship is one of the worst looking next gen games available.

Way past caring about corporations. They don't give a shit about you, why you should you care about them?

If Xbox goes down so be it. Same for Sony and Nintendo.

Xbox Series X can play gen7 games at 4k and improved performance unlike ps5.
MS is already light years ahead of sony.
I can wait a few months more for halo i mean who cares.
I only waited like 13 years for final fantasy 7 remake.

Sony has yet to show anything that doesn't look like a PS4 game using med-high pc settings.

How about NONE of them going down, and we all just try and get on and enjoy gaming for once.

Sure, that would be awesome. I have all the consoles and have used them a lot over the past years. I wish all 3 companies keep producing products I enjoy.

It's not the consumer's job to start a "grill them campaign" or for "fans" to start a revolution as if they are sports team. The market itself will dictate whether they fail or succeed and they'll adapt accordingly (or not). Vote with your wallet, not your forum or social media profile.

All new xbox games have to be streamable and scalable Cutting edge tech showcases run counter to that strategy. which could be a good thing.

Who wants MS to be another Sony? Not me. I kinda hate things like tlou2, GoW, H:Zero Dawn with their huge budgets, 6 year development times, dumb B-tier Netflix scripts, and generic AAA single player gameplay. Get studios who make point and click, card battlers, TellTale style games, Animal Crossing, etc. and dont take six years per game because of graphics, mocap, and all that other detritus that make modern videogaming mostly Entertainment Experiences and not so much game experiences.

I mean all them games you mentioned were already baked already. They just needed to ship them. Halo infinite seems to me just wasnt cooked yet and rona caught them sleeping.

It is exhausting trying to be positive about Xbox on here, never thought i would see DynamiteCop crack though. :messenger_tears_of_joy:

That Series S thread though, and the free Gold thing...

Joking.

It's rough being an Xbox supporter at the moment, the riggers of being an oppressed minority and all that.
