Hillary Clinton Introduces Videogame Regulation Legislation

Sorry for taking so long to reply. This thread has really grown since I last came in here so I apologize if you've already been answered.

But from what I've read, the devs or publishers of Indigo Prophecy were told that if it released in the US as it was for it's European release, it would receive an AO game and would basically not be able to be sold in most stores. Therefore, they cut out some of the game to get a Mature rating for US release. IMHO, this is forced censorship.

So, speaking of all the other things that the government takes a hand in disallowing minors access to...how's that going anyway?

alcohol?
cigarettes?
drugs?
porn?
guns?

All staying out greedy little hands thanks to government regulation?

The goddamn irony of this being that all the people who want regulations on videogames are saying its in part because they don't want young, impressionable minds to be inspired to go out and try to obtain these other items they aren't supposed to be able to obtain thanks to government regulation!

Here's another big reason why the video game industry needs to fight this tooth and nail.

Remember rap in the 90s? Cop Killa, Ice T, senate hearings... What came of it? 2 Live Crew kinda got screwed, but ultimately the music industry escaped unscathed and rap lives on.

Now look at the comics industry in the 50s. They bent over and took it up the ass with The Comics Code Authority, ensuring only those familliar with the underground could ever read an R. Crumb comic. The comic industry has been irrelevant to popular culture for a long time. Who knows what would've happened if it hadn't been forever cemented with the perception that it was a mere child's diversion, and creativity had been allowed to flow.

The videogame industry caved in too far and too early in the 90s. Look how pathetic the music industry's "parental advisory" is compared to movie and video game ratings. Now if the video game critics aren't happy with the ESRB they'll replace it by a government operated ratings board. They hoped caving in totally and creating a self-regulated ratings board would satisfy the opportunistic politicions, but it only bought them time.

Videogames are only the boogeyman of the moment. The industry only needs to hold off the Clintons and Liebermans long enough until they go back to hounding the movie, music, or hopskotch industry, or whatever passtime they think is corrupting children.

I'm not gay, so therefore I shouldn't care if gay people are allowed to get married? That's pretty horrible logic.
well that's a whole different issue, but at the risk of opening a can of worms, it's none of your business if gay people get married.

could you rephrase that? I'm not sure what you're trying to say here.

Not only is it none of my business, but I think they should be able to. By your argument, I shouldn't have an opinion on the matter at all.

you can have all the opinions you like. i don't see where i've said that anyone should keep their opinion to themselves...? if something i've said has come off that way it was unintended. I'm just saying i don't agree with some of them.

Sure, why are we trying to regulate the sale of videogames to minors when the acts we're afraid certain games might influence them to commit are already supposedly out of reach, thanks to government legislation? Because those legislations are ineffective, just like this one will be.
