GOG News and Updates 2011

I really want to get a hold of Nox, it is a Westwood Studios developed game and I doubt it will ever find its way onto GoG... but does antone know if it is offered anywhere else? I have not played it in ages :(

Seriously, every game on that site is the greatest classic of all time. What the fuck, GOG community? Get your shit together.
no. every game on that site is SOMEONE'S favourite game. you get your shit together and experience the wide range of amazing.

It still amazes me how many, well, good old games companies have and haven't released for digital distribution.

I've heard nothing but good things about the Tie Fighter series and I would kill to be able to get Populous: The Beginning on GOG or Steam.

I thought Lucasarts was trying to get more of their old catalog re-released, but after that bunch of adventure games they sort of stopped. :(

Does EA still hold the rights to SimGolf?

It is the EA classic game I want the most.

Might have to go grab DK2 and WC1 + 2 in the meantime.

Regarding LucasArts... well... they changed management...again. And forgot about their back catalogue... again.

Just heard about this. If I didn't already have the games (or wasn't broke), I'd snatch both WC games up. Let's hope this leads to EA rebooting the series.

Never played the WC series, how is the story?
IMO the games went down hill after the move to FMV. Horrid acting + crap dialogue. Was a portent to Chris Roberts sad attempt at being a film director. Wing Commander the Movie is proof of this.

edit: Wing Commander CIC is releasing tons of behind the scenes stuff to celebrate this.

Mind posting a quick rundown of your specs and options? Debating on if it's worth double dipping.
Q9400 @ 3.2GHz

1024x768 and hardware accel enabled ingame

Didn't check fps but it's really smooth. Scrolling is still a little fast even with it turned all the way down. Game itself also runs a little fast but I haven't tried slowing it down yet.

I always remembered liking DK1 more than 2 but now that I've played them both again I'm preferring DK2 more o_O

Same, I'd love to see SimGolf pop up.

Also I wouldn't mind see the other Sim games pop up eventually.

A little bit of elaboration from GoG folks on the expansions issue:

Guys, it turns out that getting the rights for the expansions for the EA games is very, very, very complicated. While we are (of course) working on them, the rights clearance will not be resolved any time soon. In the mean time, though, two classic games that helped define the space shooter genre for $6 is nothing to sneeze at.

That sounds like similar to what's going on with System Shock.

Love to know exactly why, though... is it maybe that the add-on (was about to call it DLC, ahaha) wasn't made by Origin/EA and only licensed by them?

So with the new releases, i remembered that i bought the original Dungeon Keeper on GOG on release and never played... and now i decided to try it.

Looks like is the dosbox version (there was a windows version that should be better), and i have tried to change some things in the graphic configuration tool, but the game looks like total crap :(

Maybe its my fault and i am doing something wrong, but well, its very disappointing.

But then i tried this:

http://keeper.lubie.org/html/dk_keeperfx_dwnld.php

And i have to say i am pretty happy with the difference :D

DOS

KeeperFX

PS: Its also a good way of playing the game on netbooks, where dosbox is too heavy.

Yup, you are missing something, but it's not well documented.

If you press Ctrl+R on the GOG version then it switches resolution and looks pretty much like the second screenshot.

Seems like the most likely reason. More people to involve in the legal quagmire of rights. Same thing happens when rights are passed through a family and it becomes hard to contact the person who has to agree to something.

Thanks for the info! I'll try it.

They updated there DK2 page and removed Windows 7 from the compatibility list. Looks like there was just no way to fix it. Wonder if they do refunds for people who bought it early expecting it to work.
ask them

Does GOG charge the price depending on your IP address? It's still slowing up dollars but on stream it's euros because of my exchange rate. I'm just curious if it's supposed to be euros.

I never bought it, I tend to wait and see how these things play out first and glad I did, I was just asking in a general sense if they did refunds.
they've done refunds on changes like this before, I'm sure they will here as well.

Great games, I hope Wing Commander 1+2 holds up well, not so worried about Dungeon Keeper 2.

Edit: also:

Would love to see Theme Hospital and Crusader: No Regret in there! Maybe it'll be the red one at the end if the colors mean anything.
I'd like to see Need for Speed: Porsche Unleashed. If EA's going to cockblock Turn 10 from using Porsches in Forza Motorsport 4, then they should at least use the license.

The original Hot Pursuit was pretty good, too. But I wonder if they'd be nervous about brand identity there.

GoG is *very* light on racers, it'd be nice to fill that out a bit.

I would assume $6 for the Ultima 1-3 pack, but I'm a little confused by it. For one thing, Ultimas 2 and 3 are *very* primitive by today's standards - has GoG released any other CGA titles? Ultima 1 had a later EGA remake.

It also leaves things a bit confused at the other end of the spectrum. Bundling Ultimas 5 and 6 feels a bit, well, wrong. 5 was the last of the EGA titles, 6 was the first of the VGA ones; there's a lot of difference in accessibility and interface between the two. Releasing 5 separately doesn't make sense, bundling it with 6 feels a bit arbitrary, and bundling it with 6 and 7 seems a bit *too* good, given that 7 is definitely enough game for GoG to release it as a standalone.

Given I've mentioned it before, what I *could* see happening - and would love - would be 5 to be given as a later freebie to coincide the release of Ultima 6 and both Worlds of Ultima titles, which all use the same basic engine and so fit quite well together.

yeah, don't think so. although I wish they would dip more into the really old. especially for infogrames' old crap.

Does it flat out not work on Win 7 then? Or is there a way to get it working through compatibility settings and the like? I was gonna buy this in the next few days but there's no point if it 100% doesn't work on Win 7.

Ultima VII, VIII and IX! Come on already! Please!
and LucasArts :(

Yes, I like 8 and 9, screw you!

I haven't been able to get it to run more than a few minutes on my Windows 7 pc even with a lot of finangling. It runs perfect on the my Vista laptop.

According to the GOG guys, it apparently isn't good with some ATI cards (in Windows 7). They're working on a fix.

I haven't tested it myself.

It runs fine for me once I used the fix from GOG here on Windows 7. People reported it crashes like once every 2-3 hours, but I didn't play long enough to see it crash, doesn't seem like a deal breaker to me though (just save every 30 mins or so), but hopefully they get it working perfectly over the next few months. That fix is for ATI cards, and it seems leaving the default resolution (800x600) and graphic settings gives the best stability. Some people have reported on nVidia cards turning on hardware acceleration actually helps, but on ATI cards it breaks the game since they are lacking certain z-buffer features needed by the game.

It seems I got it right, then (autoquote below)

The fourth one (or the second blurred one) has a color scheme pretty similar to Ultima IV cover

The game was liberated by EA when they launched the Ultima Forever Site, thus I think it's plausible.

They are definetly beyond primitive. And some versions of Ultima II are bugged as well. I think the first trilogy (or the Age of Darkness) is pretty much skippable even if you are a fan of the series.

I think they'll publish Ultima V+VI to complete the second trilogy, then the Complete Ultima VII as a stand alone (who knows if they'll include the expansions? Not that they are too important story-wise). We still have to see IF they'll publish these games, though.

Replaying WC2 now and...I don't know. I miss the interactivity you got with WC1. All there is to two is either "Play Mission" or "Watch Cutscene". No chatting in the bar. Nothing. The only real thing I like about two are in the missions themselves. Like the addition of Bombers or the new guns.

I don't miss them, since they were put inside cutscenes. You lose a bit of interactivity, of course, but the game is still the same (I would say better).

Yeah but that's the point. By putting them in cutscenes you lose the ability to roam around the ship as it were. It made the universe feel more alive as if I were a part of it as opposed to two were I just felt like I was watching a tv show (doesn't help that two's story is extremely corny & cliche). If they wanted story in there, they should have went the same route they went with Secret Missions 1 & 2. Those had the right balance between story and gameplay.

Eh, I guess I just prefer 1 and see all the subsequent games as a decline as the series went on where they cared more about cutscenes than gameplay (3, 4 & 5 are proof of this...not to mention that godawful movie)

Ok, but you had to roam around the ship just to search for team mates. There was nothing else to do and it seemed a bit like a chore to me (Fly mission, search the ship for people, fly next mission). It was the same (or even worse) in 3-5 where cutscenes had an impact on the story, IIRC.
It goes without saying that I'm just explaining my point of view, not trying to persuade you.

I definitely recommend bolding Scratches (amazing horror adventure) and Roller Coaster Tycoon 2 (its RCT2)
