GOG News and Updates 2011

Nope. They are all about as hardcore as RPG's get.

I feared that might be the answer. Probably going to chicken out then!
It's a shame because I find the art style charming and some of the mechanics sound really interesting. But if it's going to frustrate the hell out of me then its not worth it.

What EA games can we realistically expect to be added this Thursday?

Something good if this line of conversation is correct! Way too many possibilities I'd be happy with to bother listing, I'll just wait and see. There's a pretty good collection of the potential EA releases in that thread if you're curious.

Wing Commander 1 and 2 please. But really, I'd be very happy if they just released the expansion packs for the existing games. I'm worried that we're going to miss the incredible expansion stuff for Wing Commander 2 when it's eventually released.

Great games, I hope Wing Commander 1+2 holds up well, not so worried about Dungeon Keeper 2.

Edit: also:

Would love to see Theme Hospital and Crusader: No Regret in there! Maybe it'll be the red one at the end if the colors mean anything.

Nox would be awesome but don't know if it really counts as classic. Other then that I would love to see Populous, Magic Carpet, Powermonger, King's Bounty and The Immortal on GOG.

Fade to Black would also be rather cool since I never played it back in the day. Or some of those Sherlock Holmes games, never got into them when I was younger but my friend was crazy about them.

WC2 without the expansions is a crippled game. And WC1's expansions are often cited in following games (Crusade being the most referred to).
Are we positive they are not included?

On the gameplay side, I think the games are still quite playable, even though the best controller would be an old style joystick. A joypad is still good enough (since their arcade style controls) and I managed to play them even with a mouse (not the best thing in the world, please mind).

The partially non-linear story is enjoyable and it's a pity nobody followed the path opened by Chris Roberts.

Graphically the games show their age, but with a good filter they shouldn't be that bad.

Given that Magic Carpet and both Dungeon Keeper games are now up, and EA just announced a F2P Theme Park remake, and they're about to announce a new Syndicate game, I think it's pretty likely that the GOG EA deal includes at least a few other Bullfrog games.

Theme Hospital is definitely technically possible since the original release was DOS and the Windows release was DirectX.

Not sure they have enough slots in the whole deal to do the entire major Bullfrog catalogue (TP, TH, Syndicate, Syndicate Wars, Magic Carpet 2, at least a few Populous titles, Theme Park World/Sim Theme Park) but it'd be nice.

Also Wikipedia tells me that Bullfrog made a JPN/EU exclusive PS1/Windows game called Theme Aquarium :O That's pretty amazing, I'd love to check that out. Edit: Bought on eBay. It doesn't seem to run on Windows XP let alone 7 so I guess I'll setup a Windows 95 virtual PC or something

WCII also has no expansions as far as I can tell.

From the GOG release:

Definitely bad news, and it seems they removed the reference to the expansions in the game page's description, so I'm not optimistic we'll see them.

Would it be correct to believe the games are not worth playing without the expansions? I'll probably unbold them from the OP.

I'll take just about every building sim they want to release, I have really been enjoying them lately, especially a quirky sounding one, like an Aquarium sim.

As far as doing the entire major Bullfrog catalogue, they will still have slots left over after these fill up, they got 25+ releases when they signed EA, so far 6 came out with the initial batch, and 8 are slated in this batch, leaving 11+ for future releases.

It would be incorrect. The games are great on their own. Sure there was some good expansions (fly a Kilrathi pancake ship!) but WC1 & 2 vanilla are still awesome.

Hmmm. I still have a DK2 disc. See if it works on Win7 or just plop down $6?

I've never played an Ultima game, so wouldn't mind some of the isometric ones.

Oh no, they are still worth it.
WC1 is self-contained and the expansions just add some continuity tidbits that will be used in the following games. If you are a fan, you would feel the need to play them, but they are not mandatory.
WC2 main game boasts a lengthy campaign with a lot of different missions and a nice story. The problem here is that there are some loose ends that are covered in the two expansions. That's why I call it "crippled" without Secret Ops 1 and 2. But it's still enjoyable as it is.

I'll let you know how it turns out. The game only set me back $6.50 from a UK seller. Should have it in a week or two. Need to dig up a W98/W95 CD to install it as a virtual machine, though hahaha

Yep. Even though I REALLY want to bite, no sale without the expansions. This EA deal is so frustrating.

Why in the hell would this be a problem? The games are already selling for $6, why not just bump anything with expansions up to $10 and call it a day? They can't really be interested in selling 71 year old expansions separately, can they?

I figured we'd hear more about this before the second wave of EA games was released. Guess not.

DK2 got me to finally sign up on gog.

I still have the disk flying around, but I don't have a disk-drive anymore and it doesn't work on Win7 either, so this is a no brainer for me. Doesn't matter how large my backlog is, I'll play this gem today.

Some people on the GOG forums are trying to guess the next releases by looking at some blurry teasers on the site but I don't see this anywhere...

The fourth one (or the second blurred one) has a color scheme pretty similar to Ultima IV cover:

The game was liberated by EA when they launched the Ultima Forever Site, thus I think it's plausible.

My god some of these day 1 reviews are terrible

5/5 Cool!

I never played these games originally but have heard great things about them. - looking forward to downloading them. Now I wonder if System Shock/System Shock 2 and Bioforge will ever see the light of day again?

THAT IS NOT A REVIEW!

Yah...GoG user reviews are not very helpful. Nostalgia is a powerful thing.

Seriously, every game on that site is the greatest classic of all time. What the fuck, GOG community? Get your shit together.

So there is a chance for Wing Commander 3 then? It's the only WC game i played and i would buy it only for nostalgia. Although i bet the very pixelated cutscenes and character sprites inside the ships will probably hurt.(They already did hurt back in the 90s, i cant imagine right now!)

So with the new releases, i remembered that i bought the original Dungeon Keeper on GOG on release and never played... and now i decided to try it.

Looks like is the dosbox version (there was a windows version that should be better), and i have tried to change some things in the graphic configuration tool, but the game looks like total crap :(

Maybe its my fault and i am doing something wrong, but well, its very disappointing.

But then i tried this:

http://keeper.lubie.org/html/dk_keeperfx_dwnld.php

And i have to say i am pretty happy with the difference :D

DOS

KeeperFX

PS: Its also a good way of playing the game on netbooks, where dosbox is too heavy.

DK2 works almost from scratch on wine/linux. I just had to add a key in the regedit because of the "cursor stays in the middle" bug.

Works great! I was waiting eagerly for this game and after 2 hours of play the game is still awesome and not only because it was tinted by nostalgia glasses.
