Without the Community Patch, Gothic 3 is a disappointment, mainly due to the design being unable to match Piranha Bytes' ambition.

With the patch, however, the game is enjoyable, even if it isn't as great as Gothic 2. Certainly recommended if one is a fan of open-world RPG games. In fact, the world feels more alive and reactive (your actions can have an actual effect on a settlement's future) compared to the worlds in recent Bethesda games. And since it is a Piranha Bytes game, the exploration can feel dangerous, especially when you run into beasts.

Besides, the game can be a real looker on cranking up the settings/sgssaa, thanks to some gorgeous lighting.

I have the community patch 1.74 but is there anything else I should have? Are there any texture mods? What are the .ini settings for the best graphics options?

I loved Gothic 2 so I got this despite all the negative reviews. It's pretty fun so far albeit a little (a lot) clunky. The main gripe I have is the loading times. It takes a good 10 seconds to quickload on my i5-2500k, 8 GB of ram, and a GTX 570. lol.

I didn't realize Fallout 2 is the same price as Descent... hmmm... I can't get both and still get PST.

I wonder if between Blackwell Trilogy, Saria, Binding of Isaac and Blocks That Matter I could work a trade with someone for a GOG game...

Edit: That worked out. :D

Heard from someone here on GAF that the analog throttle lever/rocker on the Thrustmaster Hotas isn't recognized and won't work in the Freespace games and the Wing Commander games. But I read on some reviews that it does. Can anyone confirm which is true???

I'm about 5 hours into playing this game now and am seriously enjoying it (despite its load times). I'm starting to get a handle on the combat. Exploring the world is a lot of fun; running into a giant minecrawler and getting killed instantly was hilarious! Reminds me of good old Gothic. Community patch is a must!

I also found an "ultra" graphics setting .ini file online. The game looks fantastic!

Yea that ini file makes things look great but I would still like more draw distance and I also have this line (of demarcation) in the distance which is most noticeable on the water.

Does anyone know what version of DOSBOX Ultima VII is looking for in order to allow you to un-check the built-in DOSBOX installation? Privateer worked with using the old 0.72 exe I've backed up to overwrite the latest with before gog game installations but Ultima VII still has the box greyed out with that and the latest 0.74 too. I'd think newer games would have been updated to the latest DOSBOX by now, if not also the old games which could get that treatment periodically...

Edit: well, I just installed it, deleted its DOSBOX sub folder, and changed the shortcuts' target lines to point to the DOSBOX installation.

Also, is there a way to play Privateer with a 360 controller acting as a joystick (probably combined with keyboard inputs on top of xpadder customised buttons, I don't know how complex the game is yet)? The (or some of the) buttons do seem to work in the calibration screen but it doesn't seem to register any of the sticks so at the end it says the calibration wasn't right and to redo it (and I'm stuck in an endless loop because I don't even know what the menu and quit keys are, lol).

Edit: or if anyone has a good working mapper.txt file for Privateer with a 360 controller, that'd be great...

Edit: ops, sorry, double post, forgot I'm the last one that posted in this thread cos the other gog thread had more posts since...

Heads up: The Activision part of the sale ends in TWO DAYS. Don't get too distracted by Boxing Day egg nog that you miss the deadline on that!

The remainder of the sale goes on for another week.

Woah, thanks for that. I was putting off picking up Arcanum till later. Just grabbed it and Master of Orion 1+2 now.
