GOG News and Updates 2011

Whats the word on Two Worlds? I noticed its $4.99 on gog (50% off), but $20 on steam.

From the descriptions they are both Epic Editions.

It's not to bad. It's got a bad rap due to a horrid console version and rocky initial release, but they fixed it up pretty good. It's not amazing, but if you are in the mood for a huge open world exploration RPG then give it a go.

Wow, I just saw that they had all the last Zork games. I put up with RTZ when it came out because it was an interesting new experience but looking back now it wasn't that great. Are Nemesis and Grand Inquisitor much better? I think I heard great stuff about GI but I can't remember.

Nemesis is a very dark, wonderful game. One of my favourite adventures of all time... but really has nothing in common with the light-hearted, funny Zork games you're used to.

GI is closer to an older Zork game.

Thanks...did you like RTZ too? That game seems like such a weird multimedia relic to me.

Slipstream 5000 today, the biggest surprise for me is that it is already being sold on gamersgate for under half the price, DRM free.

Never heard of it, but the corny slogan "Feel the speed, feel the freedom, feel the danger" looks to fit it perfectly.

I remember this way back, when I was an Amiga only user. I remember that time, because it was very late in the life of the Amiga, but still having faith that it could come back from it's slumber. And then I would play games on the Amiga that was much better than the crap pixelized mess that was PC games (I didn't know about the free anti-aliasing with playing games via RGB connections).

Always wanted to try this one out.

Every week I hope to see the EA expansion packs added to the existing games. Not so much for the games out now but for reassurance that the upcoming Wing Commander games will also get them.

Ooooh, I remember this game. Played the demo back in the day. Pretty cool flying racer.

Every week I hope to see more EA games. I thought gog had a ton lined up for release, and yet we've only seen 5(?).

Or give me RCT2. :)

The one time I played RTZ I enjoyed it well enough, but yeah it was a bit ahead of its time. Even Zork Nemesis, which is more contemporary to something like Spycraft, is a little infuriating to play now despite how excellent it is as a game :)

Edit: Now, the other thing is I remember RTZ having some sort of dumb adventure-game-logic type puzzles. I can't remember which ones in specific and I don't have my adventure game notebook anymore to see what notes I took, ahahaha.

GOG talked about the gap between the first few releases and the rest way back when the news was first confirmed. Gotta get their ducks in a row before everything else is released.

Okay, I am getting sick of games I want to go on sale not going on sale at GOG.

They are so cheap already though. I can understand waiting on games you are mildly interested in, but if it's a game you want to play right now is it really worth waiting an undetermined # of months to save the $2-5?

I bought my first non-sale game yesterday, realMyst for $5.99. I just couldn't wait for it to go on sale anymore. Just think of all the stuff you buy on PSN/XBLA/Steam for $5-10. Is paying full price on gog really a worse value? The sales will still be good for games you are only mildly interested in.

Man I thought GOG would have a huge hot streak with the Interplay deal, but after the first run it's been a bunch of nobodies. I hope they still deliver on Dungeon Keeper 2, plz take my money GOG.

It's the principle of it all. You know how it is.

When you have a huge backlog, there really feels like no reason to buy the game unless you want it right now at full price, whether it be a classic from GoG or a new release you were hyping up for the past month. If I didn't have a giant backlog, I would probably buy them one at a time or something and go through em, but the last game I bought on GOG right as soon as I could was P:ST a few months ago and started and finished it.

What are the chances of Black & White being released on GOG? Neither of the games are sold on DD anywhere :/
Well the expansion tho the second game is on Origin but not the base game which is weird.

I imagine it's part of EA's catalog, so it could be one of the 25 games.

Oh I do understand completely. It was a small victory for me when I overcame my sale compulsion to buy Divine Divinity full price ($6) rather than waiting for a sale.

UFO: Aftermath - 70% off ($1.80)

Worth it? Seems to be getting middling reviews, but at $1.80 it's probably worth trying out.

It's probably tied up in legal issues, since it was developed by Lionhead Studios, who are now a subsidiary of Microsoft.

I beat it for the first time recently and it hasn't aged that well. First of all, it's locked at a specific resolution (1024x768, IIRC). There is a game-breaking bug that might prevent you from completing the game and it has a difficulty curve like a roller coaster. The sequels are a bit more polished. That being said, it is still worth playing if you're an old X-Com fan. It's not perfect, but at least they try to do something different and some of the ideas aren't half bad.

Picked RCT and UT2k4. Gonna enjoy those 2 for a good long while ^^

also how's slipstream? Seems quite interesting.

It'd be nice if they went with the two SKUs in a similar way to how the original title was originally planned to go; release the white version at the $9.99 pricepoint and the black version at the $5.99 pricepoint, with the difference going to Child's Play or similar.

As a random aside, on the EA front: Is anyone else surprised that the majority of EA's output is going at the cheaper pricepoint? I was half expecting everything to be at the $9.99 figure.

I'm guessing that the sequels will get be priced higher so that people will still buy the originals due to the lower price.

After how the freakin' Activision priced most of their GOGs sensibly, I'm not that surprised anymore.

On that note, everyone should get Arcanum now if they inexplicably haven't.

Current weekend deal is Might and Magic Universe up to 50% off (if you get them all, or 40% off if bought individually):

Heroes Chronicles: All chapters
Heroes of Might and Magic®
Heroes of Might and Magic® 2: Gold Edition
Heroes of Might and Magic® 3: Complete Edition
Heroes of Might and Magic® 4 Complete
Might and Magic® 6-pack: Limited Edition
Might and Magic® 7: For Blood and Honor™
Might and Magic® 8: Day of the Destroyer™

I've never bought a game from GoG, but in a couple of months I should have cleared my backlog completely, and I'll be looking to buy Planescape: Torment, has it ever been on sale? What is the sale situation on GoG?

Higher profile games like that go on sale usually just once a year or twice a year, if you want to catch sales you have to add GOG to your RSS reader and pick up games whenever there's something you wanted, they do sales every weekend generally, on a few games. Otherwise, if you wait for the holidays, there's a pretty good chance nearly everything will go on sale. Though as many people will say, you're only saving a few dollars in the end, so waiting 1/2 year for it isn't exactly the best idea if you want to play it sooner rather than later.

Yeah, I'll buy it before I want to play it if it's on sale over the next couple of months, but I don't plan on waiting when I'm caught up on my other stuff.

Thanks for the reply.

I'm pretty sure it hasn't been on sale yet. Games are normally 30 to 60% off during sales, which occur at least every weekend. This summer they've had two larger sales. One with Interplay titles and another one with hidden gems.

Everyone should be buying at least Heroes of Might and Magic III Complete, and the Might and Magic 6-pack if they haven't already! No excuses at $5.99

The whole pack is a pretty good deal. The only completely redundant game is perhaps HOMM1, and the extra 10% off will get you that for free. Others range from decent (HOMM4, M&M8) to excellent (M&M4-7, HOMM3).

Already have HoMM 3 and M&M 6 pack from GoG. I have all of the others in physical media as well but looks like it's finally time to get GoG versions of them all.

Given GoG's demographics, I wonder if they could afford to do small print runs of classic feelies for popular games? I think it's pretty safe to say that Ultima will be on the service at some point, and I'm pretty sure I'd be willing to pay a small extra premium to get, say, a cloth map in the classic style.

One problem is that GOG is a company from Poland, and GOG's audience is largely not, so that'd be a major pain for them. Another problem is that there exist quite a few budget reprints of games in Europe that don't exist over here--Theme Hospital, for example, has long been out of print over here and isn't even on GOG yet, but has an active budget reprint in the UK/some of mainland Europe (I think it's 9 euro or so?)

All of the Infinity Engine games were on sale last Xmas.
I got Planescape: Torment gifted to me by a friendly GAFer, but I would totally have bought the Baldur's Gate games if I'd known. How much off were they, do you remember?

Pretty sure they were 33% off at 6.66 for each Infinity Engine game. That is what my records show I got Planescape Torment and the Icewind Dales for (I picked up the BGs the day they were released.)

I have all of those M&M games (except Heroes Chronicles) on disc but I've had trouble getting some of them to run in Vista in the past. Does gog update the games in any way to ensure their compatibility?

If I were to buy two, which other should I go for?

HOMM3 complete - it has the most depth, the best balance and literally thousands of hours of content when you throw in all of the user-made maps and campaigns. For the classic M&M series I prefer 7, it essentially feels like an expansion to 6 but it has 3 extra character classes and much deeper character development, and I thought the story and game world were more interesting than 6 or 8. (I couldn't tell you much about 1-5.)

Hrm, why 3 and not 4?
4 added a bunch of stuff to shake up the formula, but most of the stuff they added (like fog of war, heroes participating in battle, wandering monsters that moved around and attacked you, simultaneous damage when a monster attacks, probably some other stuff I can't remember) ended up making the experience worse imo.
