GOG News and Updates 2011

I'm now trying to remember just how to coax punters back into riding a coaster after you've had a fatality on it.

Joseph: I thought *I* had a lot (23.8 rows), but I'm pretty sure you beat me.

That said, I suspect if you added on all the games I already own in some other form, we might be rather closer...

I'm guessing it's unlikely for Planescape: Torment to go on sale because the promo said something about lesser-known classics. Seeing as how GoG touts P:T as the second most wanted game on GoG, I'm guessing this is out of the running. Hopefully Gabriel Knight goes on sale though!!

I'm not complaining though, if it's a Planescape: Torment or an Icewind Dale selling on the cheap for a day I'm totally in.

I don't think any of the infinity engine games are going to qualify as hidden gems. If one were, it probably would be Icewind Dale though.

Does anyone know why Dreamfall: The Longest Journey isn't up on GOG? I'd rather buy from there than Steam :(

Because it's still too expensive for GOG's price points (5.99 $ & 9.99 $). Dreamfall still costs 20$ (or 20€ for us stupid Europeans) on Steam outside the summer sale.

IWD2 would be more likely. But I agree that any infinity engine game is unlikely to be selected.

After purchasing all three Fallout games. I wanted to try out similar games. In comes Arcanum. Wow, this game! I've only played about 45mins. But, the voice acting and story are top notch. In my opinion very few modern rpgs even come close to it's quality.

I'm new to GoG. The Fallout sale drew me in. But I'm glad I discovered it.

Another Fallout question, sorry!

How do I change my followers' weapons? I've given them new weapons but they don't seem to be using them, wth?

All you can really do is put the weapon in their inventory, then talk to them and tell them to use their best weapon the next time you get into a fight. You can't equip it onto them manually.

Oh shit, I know what I'll be buying tomorrow. I've been wanting to play Rollercoaster Tycoon ever since the first time I saw that gif of the rollercoaster going off the rails and crashing in to a crowd of people. Nice work, CD Projekt.

I still haven't put much time into Fallout. Damn screen tearing. :\ No one on the GOG forums has helped me out yet. Rollercoaster Tycoon is tempting, since I have fond memories of sending patrons to their death many, many years ago.

That's right... did that do realtime first-person of whatever rollercoaster you created? I remember seeing footage of that, but don't know whether that was just a generic AVI or if it was on-the-fly.

RCT was strictly isometric viewpoint, unless they added that feature in a later addon. I think you're thinking of Theme Park World, which I belive had ride-on options for the customisable rides.

How does Rollercoaster Tycoon run on a today's windows 7/1080 resolution?

It runs fine...but you can't choose your resolution. It's fairly low res (640x480 or 800x600... can't tell), but it runs fine for me on Win7 x64.

Is it full screen only?

Yes! That's exactly what I was thinking of. Any idea if, out of Theme Park and Rollercoaster Tycoon, that one is better than the other?

Yea. The game launcher automatically kills explorer.exe and puts the desktop in 256 color mode. So, you can still alt-tab, but it won't be ideal.

As soon as you exit the game, the launcher restores everything to the way it was.

This is actually probably what took RCT so long, it always had spotty compatibility with win7/vista in the past, but it looks like GoG did a good job to get it working flawlessly.

I'd say that Theme Park is a bit more light-hearted and accessible, but RCT is the deeper experience and - for my tastes - the better game.

I'm ashamed that I've never played Roller Coaster Tycoon before. I was really impressed by what I played last night.

Can anyone tell me a bit more about this? Does it hold up well, and is it any good?
I played it for the first time about a year ago. Holds up well, I thought, even if it's only for the atmosphere. Nice and creepy.

Downside: The last level or two just aren't as interesting as the earlier stuff.

Advice: TURN OFF THE VOICES, holy shit.

Some questions:

1.- How hard is the game. Does the difficulty comes from the puzzles or reflexes?

2.-These puzzles. The solutions are abstract or based more on practical reasoning?

3.- Interface. Does it holds up to todays standards?

Finally is the game really good or just one of those games elevated by the sails of nostalgia.

I don't remember, but I think there are few sections where you can die because of reflex. Otherwise, it's all about puzzles.

There are few abstract puzzles, but most of them are logical.

3.- Interface. Does it holds up to todays standards?
It's a point & click adventure game, what do you expect ;)

It is good; has really great atmosphere.

1. Puzzles. (Except one tricky bit, but that's more due to the controls and perspective.)
2. It's a mind fuck, so a lot of it might not make intuitive sense per sé, but it's doable. And if not, GameFAQs. Item hunting was what gave me the most problems, I think.
3. It's point&click, so fundamentally, yes and no.

That all being said, crashes. Lots.
When I played it (Win7 64bit), it would regularly crash when FMVs started, so save often. Also, read this: http://www.gog.com/en/forum/sanitarium/crash_stopping_me_playing/post11 (And other threads about crash issues.) I finished the game in the end, it's doable, but the crashes were very irritating.

Thanks for taking the time to answer, im inclined to buy it.

Regarding the point and click, well yes you are right but there is room for creative and practical interface. For example, Full Throttle UI is a lot more polished thatn say Secret of Monkey Island. Of course im aware of the differences between both games but the former is a lot more practical.

Edit:

Very valuable input Rufus.

Crashes, that shit is infuriating. I have to consider this carefully. Depending of what steam has today i'll decide on the potential purchase.

Again thanks for the advice guys.

You can choose resolution.

Not many options, but windowed mode allows resizing, so it at least isn't blown up and stretched horizontally.

No. There is a windowed mode, but the game kills explorer.exe

I was just coming in here to correct myself, but seems like you did the job for me. :)

Yea, I completely forgot to look through the options.

Earth 2150 Trilogy is the latest hidden gem. Anyone have anything to say about it?
I was hoping for a pack with 2140, 2150 and 2160 instead. They were all very solid and fun real-time strategy games focused mostly on unit customization. It's been over a decade since I last played it and I have no idea if it still holds up, but I'll probably buy it myself.

It's a serviceable experience if you're into RTS. It offers a lot of customisations (making your own units), besides the standard pre-build units. There are better RTS in the history of RTS, but if you're in need of playing anything new, I'd definitely recommend it.

WELL don't forget I also own most of the games I don't have on there already as well! and a lot of the ones I've got. SO THERE.

but a couple of games like empire earth 3 are just fucking retarded and must die. would not get this even if they paid me ten dollars for it.

it's nice to see a couple of other people go completely crazy on gog as well anyway. hehe.

well I do have ofp on there, so I win by default! FATALITY

why not update the title with the name of the game? it won't be important to know when the whole sale is off, since each game sales end the day it is on sale.

btw, I got Sanitarium the other day. Hasn't downloaded it yet, I wanted the game since 2000 when I printed a list of top 25 adventure games by gamespot; man I miss those days that gamespot could have some use.

I was just looking at some of the mods/support out there for Duke Nukem 3D still, and wow, I'm shocked at how many semi active or active forums there are for Duke Nukem.

There is ...

GOG forums: http://www.gog.com/en/forum/duke_nukem_series/#1310242831

3D Realms Duke Nukem forums: http://forums.3drealms.com/vb/forumdisplay.php?f=15

Gearbox Duke Nukem forums (mostly DNF): http://forums.gearboxsoftware.com/forumdisplay.php?f=103

eDuke/Duke4.net forums: http://forums.duke4.net/forum/26-official-eduke32-and-eduke32-modifications-discussion/

Not bad for a "dead" franchise with a bomb new release.

Seems a little too advertise-y to me. I understand that it might be more useful that way, but I'm not sure I want to be putting the odder games which aren't too popular anymore in the title every day; generally title updates are for bigger things.

Do you really want Earth 2150 on the same level as RCT? ;)

Well, DN3D stands on its own as a great game. I hope that all the people who bought DNF and were introduced to Duke Nukem for the first time, would check out DN3D. It still plays great and while it has obviously aged, it's still relevant.

eduke32 is the only way to play it now, imo.

Unreal Gold is at $3.99

I bought it, slowly replacing my disc version of the Unreal Anthology. Hopefully the rest will see a discount eventually.

Yay Unreal. I had the game when I got it with my Voodoo Banshee but never completed it. The publish date says 2000; I could've sworn the game came out before 2000.

Edit: Wiki says 1998. 2000 must be for Gold edition.

Awesome that RCT Delux is finally available for Digital Download as Atari only had the vanilla version in their store. Hopefully GOG does the same for RCT 2, as (aside from the scenario-progression side of things) it's superior in almost every way.

When you see the brilliance residing in Three Monkeys Park you will say wow.
