GOG News and Updates 2011

I wonder if GOG will put up the first few Need for Speed games that were released on PC. I really enjoyed those.

Oooh, Porsche Unleashed. I would love to play that again.

I would guess maybe licensing issues would be tricky though....

Not if EA didn't already own the shit out of the Porsche license.

What's the point, racing is a genre too dependent on tech, so most of the time the latter releases made other ones irrelevant.

Thinking of picking up Planescape: Torment, and seeing what all hubub is about.

Probably picking up Rayman 2 too, soon as I get paid.

Well this is nice. I am trying to buy some games off of GoG but for whatever reason Republic: The Revolution is in my cart and I cannot remove it. I have logged out and back in. CDProjekt just doesn't want me to become a customer. First they never responded to my question regarding Myst and now this mess. Anybody have any idea that doesn't involve sending a support ticket?

Pretty sure that game isn't for sale anymore. Did you try clearing your cookies for gog.com?

Yep. Let me do it again.

Edit: Nope, still won't let me remove it. When I try a pop up says 'Oops, sorry, some type of error :('

That's weird. So does it actually try to charge you for it, if you check out?

How does RotT compare to Duke3d, Doom, and Blood? Especially in the level design

The level design isn't exactly spectacular as it's built with a heavily modified version of the Wolf3D engine and the levels are more maze-like than any of those games you mentioned, but all of the levels in RotT are absolutely chock full of secrets - the gameplay is a ton of fun too, mainly thanks to some fairly long and challenging levels, detailed enemies and a very inventive weapon set. It's got a great nonsensical sense of humour as well, which stems from it's unique development as it started life as a sequel to Wolfenstein 3D and had to be abruptly altered when iD cancelled the sequel as they didn't want to draw focus from Doom. Also, the game is notable for introducing a number of firsts to the FPS genre, namely rocket jumping and capture the flag mode in multiplayer, which was up to 11 players and amazing at the time after playing 4 player Doom.

Sooooooo Alpha Centauri is coming out tomorrow right? Right?
I hope so, it's definitely not guaranteed though. They said they would be gradually released over the next several months, which forced me to lower my expectations for Thursday.

I remember reading how it originally started as Wolf3d sequel; I guess that explains the similarities with Wolf3d's maze-like level design.

I'll give it a shot and see how it holds up.

Why is Witcher 2 the full $50 on GoG? I decided I was going to buy it thinking it was $40 (which it still is on Steam). I thought the sale was for the full week of E3.

So, hmmm. GoG haven't updated this week. Now, ordinarily I'd say "week off for E3 just after a big announcement", which I'd have no problem with.

But then there's a newspost saying:

While part of the team is in LA, sipping drinks, laying on the beach and pretend they're working hard, the rest of GOG.com staff (including the editor of this news) is in the office making sure you get your weekly dose of classics :).

So, there *might* be a release on the cards before the week's through. Or maybe ROTT is it. Hard to say. But generally they release on Tuesdays and Thursdays, so here's hoping.

Excluding end of year holidays, I'm not sure GOG's had a single week without a release, not in the last year or two I don't think. It'd be very weird for them to miss their first week right after signing a 25+ game deal with a new publisher.

I hope they just have a late release, it sorta made sense not to do a Tue/Wednesday release because of all the E3 stuff, but they shouldn't miss an entire week because of it.

Ah thanks! I hope it goes on sale again soon! I would get it now if I had the time to play it atm.

It's worth full price though! Don't wait. ::nudgenudge::

Does it? They said the next EA games would be those three, but they never made clear if they weren't going to to release non-EA games as well during this upcoming period.

You're right, it doesn't have to be any of those, it'd be nice if they put out one EA game a week, but they could alternate weeks between EA and other publishers, or mix them together.

So it may be none of those three, now I regret I may have gotten some people's hopes up.

Quick warning: I see no mention of Alien Crossfire. Not that that'll stop me.

Lack of bundled expansions is a growing trend with these EA releases, damn licensing issues. I think SMAX added quite a bit to SMAC too, shame, but it won't stop me either. Hopefully they bundle it in down the road.

Bought and bought.

Never got to play Crusader, hope it holds up.
I'm guessing Crusader will be one of the ones that holds up least. The animation and destruction was pretty advanced when it came out but there have been plenty of overhead shooters since then and most of them take advantage of modern controllers.

If GoG had complete autonomy with pricing, I would expect the expansions to appear for free for people with the original game when the licensing is sorted. That said, that's something EA may well override.

Something I often wondered about Crusader: Is that the same basic engine as Ultima 8? Or just a coincidence that two Origin titles released at similar times both had an isometric engine?

Not missing too much. New factions are bland. Alien factions are complete imba and take away from the philosophical undertones of the story.

Nonetheless, it had some game balances, such as the nerf for the hunter-killer algorithm. Getting that for the University in the original basically made them tech so far ahead of everyone else.

Same engine, I'm sure.

edit: OK, I never played SMAC. Is it still worth it without the expansion?

edit edit: Too late. Crusader and SMAC are now a part of my increasingly large gog library.

Yes, it was used for Crusader: No Remorse and Crusader: No Regret.

But were any as cool as doing this?

Crusader's almost like a puzzle game at times, and the ridiculous death animations add a lot of charm. And it also had the shop element between levels, though that may be No Regret I'm thinking of. It's not as clean as sprite games normally are due to the art style and limited color palette, so that hurts it a little, but I think once you get over the controls it'd hold up pretty well.

What's up with the missing expansions on this EA stuff? I don't think they've managed to get any of them! GOG's usually so good with that sort of thing.

I hope correcting this is a priority for them since these are real, honest to god expansions, not the half-assed DLC we see today.
