GOG News and Updates 2011

So why do you think U9 is bad? What reasons have you heard, since you've never played it?

It was in reference to HK-47's joke about someone wanting U8/9 to be equal to someone wanting MoO 3. MoO 3 is something that's universally deemed pretty horrible. I know there are some people who "enjoy" it (after mods), but MoO 1 and 2 fans by in large frown upon it. Hell it's even got a low review on GOG, which is never a good thing.

If you want to take up the argument that U9 is actually a good/great or a bad one, do it with HK-47. Him comparing it to MoO3 is enough to keep me clear from it though :)

You only need Shadow Magic. 1 isn't as good as 2 and 2 is basically made irrelevant by Shadow Magic.

Yea, that's what I thought. I only mentioned picking up 2 as well since it's only $5 and has a bunch of campaigns that aren't in SM.

There was one guy I saw that said he preferred 1 to everything else because he thought 2/SM looked significantly worse than 1, but I don't understand that myself.

So do you think Privateer 2 was good or bad? HK thinks it's bad. Apparently within the same sphere of bad that MoO3 shares.

I enjoyed Privateer 2. It wasn't as open as the first game but the tradeoff was a much stronger narrative arc.

Interview with the managing director of GOG.com.

"I am trying to speak humbly right now, but I think when people want to buy new games, they go on Steam, and when it comes to classics, the first thought that comes into their mind is going to GOG, and I'm quite happy with that."

That's how I roll.

Me too. I think GOG has read the market exactly right. I'm glad that they're maintaining their dedication to their ideals, you don't see that in too many companies these days.

Speaking of Ultima 9........does anyone know where I could find that Greenspeak article where Jeff Green tore it a new asshole because it wasn't quite finished?

Privateer 2 has some fantastic actors in it, but I think the gameplay is pretty bad. The Spoony Experiment's review goes into detail no lots of things I dislike about it. I dont know if someone has done patches to fix stuff like the AI. But then that doesnt help things like the fact that I'm a smuggler who cant even smuggle without other ships to carry the cargo.

Did I say Privateer 2 was as bad as MoO 3? Cause its not that bad. Still pretty bad though.

I cant wait till Crusader: No remorse hits.

I think thats the game I'm most excited for. I'm getting it and Alpha Centauri as soon as they are up on the store.

we can already reveal that the next upcoming titles from this huge deal are: Crusader: No remorse, Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri and Magic Carpet.

:)

I was literally JUST talking about how there is nowhere to buy this from and any other, um, non buying links are incomplete or incompatible. I said "man it'd be awesome if gog picked this game up" and well... :D

oh YES
Touch me all night long Alpha Centauri.

Never played a Civilization game past the first one but I and Alpha Centauri forever +1.

Oh and the expansion pack definitely needs to be included. I will gladly put my $10 down for that.

Oh and.......................
The only Ultima game I've ever beaten was part 8.

Underworld is a different genre from the proper Ultimas. Its the granddaddy of the FPS/RPG hybrid.

I bought Descent Freepsace and Descent Freespace 2 from GOG and I really enjoyed being a small ship while flying through the capital ship fights. Are there any games on GOG (or anywhere actually) where the focus is on being a capital ship? Stuff like training your crew, upgrading your ship, etc. I also had Starlancer on Dreamcast, but it seems like the whole space genre died out for a while. Thanks for any help

Whats funny is that the first time I played it was on Sega Saturn. Had no idea there was even a PC version, let alone a Crusader no regret.

The Independence War games on GOG have you flying a Corvette, not a giant cruiser but definitely bigger then a fighter.

Outside of that there aren't a ton. Lots of decent Star Trek ones (Klingon Academy, Starfleet Command, Bridge Commander) but they are nigh impossible to obtain legitimately these days. If you don't mind a little strategy mixed with your simulation then give Nexus: The Jupiter Incident a go. Fantastic game.

If you're a brave man, you could delve into the grotesque underbelly of Derek Smart's Battlecruiser games, but I wouldn't recommend it.

Crusader and Alpha Centauri are going to great to play again. Particularly Crusader, hopefully they get Crusader: No Regret too.

I've somewhat known for a while Privateer 2 was a black sheep, as much as I try to forget it. I avoided watching that video review, because I'd probably feel insulted after seeing all the flaws in it. I enjoyed it at release (when I had a more limited access to games), but I can't deny it's pretty flawed looking at it today and not all it should have been. Likely that video review is all you need to see having never played the game to make you avoid it. There's a dozen of better space sims I could just as easily sink my teeth in to, had I never played Privateer 2. When it comes to old games, my philosophy for replaying/trying them is they have to have been great if I missed them, or I had to have played them when they came out, for the nostalgia.

It's ultimately a matter of access. I have very wide tastes in gaming genres, which is a blessing and a curse. So I have access to (literally) 1,000s of games today to play and pick between over every system + PC, not just the hundreds on the shelves of the computer/video rental store when I was younger. Stuff that is pretty flawed goes to the bottom of hundreds of unplayed games, and an ever increasing number of unplayed newer ones, so basically I never play them.

I've seen screenshots of the console version of Crusader, it's scary. The PC version looks a million times better in SVGA without all the bleeding colors and fuzzy graphics.

It's obviously very dated but the UU games are the missing link between "grid-based" first person RPGs like Dungeon Master and Might & Magic and FPS/RPG hybrids like System Shock and Deus Ex. The pack is totally worth $5.99 just because these games (to some of us) are an important little piece of history. Thankfully, they're actually still really good games.

Warren fucking Spector!

That's why I'm getting it. I remember reading a lot of mentions about UU in connection to Deus Ex and well if it's DX like, than it's worth a check.

Wing Commander Privateer looks pretty cool and I like Spoony's discussion of it, well before I think tanking the sequel lol

I can't believe you can sell slaves in the game! lol

Watching a LP of Bioforge from the LParchives. I really hope its one of the 25.

I assume that Wing Commander 1&2 and Ultima 1-3, 4-6 and 7 part 1&2 will be pack deals if they are part of the 25. I wonder if a package like UU counts as one or two games.

I used to love bashing the shit of things with an arm in Bioforge.

So damn underrated that game.

One of the 25+ :)

That is precisely how I assumed they would divide them up, yes.

I wonder if a package like UU counts as one or two games.

They've always counted package releases like this as a single game in the past when they've been like "we have seven games coming out over the next two months" or whatever, so I think one.

fucking awesome. this was definitely the best case scenario for their announcement. ea omg

hm. so bioforge, gene wars, hopefully a deal with games workshop for space hulk and vengeance of the blood angels (lol, likely). a deal for blade runner seems unlikely as well, but give it. lands of lores, nox. all ultimas. powermonger. early nfs. sim city 2000 / copter / tower. hm, what else do I want. a server for old old style ultima online maybe! hehe that would be something

Crusader and Bioforge blew my 13-year old mind back then.

Are there any widescreen settings hacks available for Alpha Centauri?

I don't care about anything in EA's massive collection of old properties besides SimAnt.

The above statement is not really true, but it is pretty much true.

I just played the open source wrapper for Theme Hospital recently, and having it widescreen and hires is kinda mind-blowing.

I wonder why none of the Splinter Cell games have made it onto GOG.

And why Pandora's Tomorrow still isnt on Steam.

I'll love EA forever and ever if they get old-school Need for Speed goodness on GOG, preferably High Stakes, Porsche Unleashed and Hot Pursuit 2.

Wasn't quite finished?

That's a bit of an understatement.

Played Dungeon Keeper for nearly four hours this morning. The game has held up incredibly well. Press Alt+R in-game to tighten up the graphics.

Bullfrog 8*(

I need Theme Park pronto, GOG.

I really wish GOG could get access to SSI's catalog. So many great games. Ubisoft holds the rights, but isn't doing anything with it.

I'd totally for some Gold Box packs and some Dark Sun: Shattered Lands

I wonder if GOG will put up the first few Need for Speed games that were released on PC. I really enjoyed those.

Also, I asked this pages back but I think it went unnoticed. Does the icon for The Witcher 2 stay moved over an extra space for anyone else?

Ha ha, the opening of that scene from Charlie and the Chocolate factory summed it up pretty aptly.

"Space Quest!"

"Duke Nukem!"

"Descent!"

I've already got a wishlist of over 20 games and it's still growing as I leap through the genres.
