Future ‘A Star Wars Story’ Spinoffs on Hold at Lucasfilm

Damn that solo bomb actually had consequences.

Sources with knowledge of the situation tell Collider that Lucasfilm has decided to put plans for more A Star Wars Story spinoff movies on hold, instead opting to focus their attention on Star Wars: Episode IX and what the next trilogy of Star Wars films will be after that film.

In addition to Episode IX, Lucasfilm has officially announced development on a new Star Wars trilogy focused on new characters from The Last Jedi writer/director Rian Johnson, as well as a new series of films written by Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. These projects continue to be in development and are not part of the paused spinoffs we’re hearing about.

I'm sure glad that Disney's takeaway from this whole boondoggle is to continue letting Rian Johnson's ego stir himself turgid and jerk off on the audience for three movies. Wish I had millions of dollars to burn on three films directed by the guy that scored a whopping 46% with the audience. Guess the plan is for critics to see the films in theaters 119 times each.

Yeah they really let the IP go down the shitter. I am expecting some major shakeups before or at least after episode 9 is out. They’ll have to give it some time to breathe again and maybe even use competent writers next round.

I'll watch any Rian Johnson Star Wars movie on day one...when it launches on Netflix streaming a year later and costs me nothing.

Fair enough. It sounds like they'll make enough money for now off Episode IX and Rian Johnson/David Benioff and D.B. Weiss trilogy.

So...anyone worried that episode 9 is mostly going to be damage control and setup for the next trilogy?

Either way I'm not going to go see IX at the cinema if there are no organisational changes at Lucas. Likewise with Ryan films.
It doesn't even matter if they are the best movies ever I don't like the way they communicate and attack fans and the community.

I am ok with this, the whole thing is a dumpster fire at the moment. They need some leadership change in Lucasfilm also.

The latter isn't likely, they've made it clear that the next trilogy will be in a timeline far away from 1-9 (although they haven't confirmed if it will be before or after those movies).

Personally I think they should focus on things outside of the movies for awhile like games, tv shows, and more cartoon shows /movies. Rebuild the fandom and then relaunch these new movies.

I think they've pretty much squandered any goodwill the majority of the public have towards them save from those poor saps caught in the trap of sunk cost bias when it comes to their fandom. I'd be amazed if whatever Johnson has been working on ever sees the light of day given the general apathy towards TLJ.

Good. Hopefully they realise that having a hit every couple of years is better than killing the interest in the franchise with yearly movies no one asked for. Will be interesting to see how they fix this because at least for me the damage has already been done. My interest in Star Wars is at an all time low and knowing that the biggest thing I have to look forward to in the future is a trilogy by the guy that made TLJ isn't helping

Social justice claims another victim.

The Last Jedi was so awful, and to think this guy with little to no experience ruined a huge franchise...it’s actually sad their was no master plan like they have at marvel.

I'll probably watch IX, but I think I'm done with new Star Wars movies/shows at this point. I don't trust David Benioff and Dan Weiss to make good original material (although 25th Hour is great). I didn't like The Last Jedi so the idea of 3 more Rian Johnson films is offputting. The only thing that would interest me at this point is getting Denis Villeneuve to direct.

Last Jedi was so awful I didn't even see Solo during its premier.

I did plan to go during its last run for cheaper ticket price but too bad my local cinema had to pull out the movie quickly because no one came to see it 2 weeks.

No regrets, will happily wait for it to be on HBO.

On the potential bright side, hopefully this encourages the brain trust to out source and bring some exciting new ideas and stories to the franchise, instead of dredging up familiar characters from the past and wrapping paper-thin, barely serviceable, plots around them.

Also sad to see radical visionary, Ryan J, still part of this franchise. At LEAST 50% of the fan base despise him, but they are sticking with him....

They probably will learn the wrong lesson from Solo. I didn't give a shit about Rogue One or Solo, but standalone stories could work well in that universe. Don't just churn out trilogies every year now.

Disney has enough IPs, soon to include X-Men, fantastic four, and Avatar, that they can afford to space things out a bit. Solo had production issues, but why release it in May just a few months after the divisive TLJ.

You know, I didn't get to see any of the fallout of star wars till I got back in the states in March. I had a completely weird position watching TLJ in Bolivia. I left the movie really confused and not satisfied in any way. Rian Johnson managed to ruin any hope I had for the movie. Seriously, they had the easiest out by having Leia die in the movie but instead they turned her into zombie super hero.

Rian Johnson was the issue. And they still can't seem to figure that out. He's literally killed Star wars for many.

I actually enjoyed solo most of the new movies by far. With rogue one right behind it.

Time for a reboot.
Start over and focus on the force.
Make it powerful like it was originally intended.
I want to see it reach a power level of over 9000, and not the current weaker than teen Yamcha status.

Villeneuve would be great, but after Blade Runner financial flop, I don't think he's the name that LucasFilm will be looking for...

I didn't think it was that bad. It had some bad things like the casino planet and
that Luke died.
All the Rey and Luke scenes were great. I would have chosen someone else to direct it but it was ok.

I enjoyed Solo but it was forgettable. I don't think about it almost at all.

There's 2 reasons that I didn't and won't go see Solo.

1. I didn't want to see a recasted Han Solo in an origin movie no one ever asked for.
2. After TLJ, I'm pretty much boycotting all their Star Wars films.

TFA had it's share of problems, but it at least had some decent characters and set up intrigue for the rest of the trilogy. TLJ ruined any good will the trilogy had. I don't even care what happens next and have no desire to see episode IX now. The only way I'm seeing that movie is if basically all of the TLJ critics say it's a masterpiece that redeems the series.

Luke was butchered as well as Yoda even though he was barely in it.

Mark Hamil himself wasn't happy at all with the character and was a betryal of the character.

Like I could go on and on about what was wrong but it's been talked to death at this point.

Star Wars is about going on adventures and making awesome characters. Nobody from the current characters are original or memoriable. The most interesting character was Snoke, and we all know what happened with that.

The current trilogy to me feels like Rian Johnson was trying to force star wars to evolve beyond what the series is known for. He twisted so many things for absolutely no reason. Everything you wanted as a fan, he did the opposite.

But what do you expect when Disney gave the reigns to one of the most iconic franchises to some dude.

Solo isn't a masterpiece by any means and has a lot of issues, but the characters were great and I went on an adventure that I'd be glad to go on again in a couple years.

I'll never watch force awakens and Last Jedi again. There's zero reason to.

It bothered me how Rei, with absolutely no training, can down all those guards with Snoke just cause she’s Rei. There no underdog story for her she’s just the all powerful. How is that any character someone can get behind?

Watch this part on 24:39 on how ridiculous Rey's character is, and this is just one example of many.

I was hoping that things would change with Rogue One or at least be open to different types of movies with more modern themes.
There was a lot of murder/death and I imagine there was even more in the primary cut before the reshoots.
But TLJ was half a step in the wrong direction.
There were some great fight scenes but not enough to redeem the new direction.

Sad because Rogue One and Solo are much better than the Force Awakens and The Last Jedi. There's something profoundly wrong about the way they've continued the saga and its characters and the fact that they're moving forward with Rian Johnson, in spite of everything, is very troubling.

This is not what I want. Disney is placing the blame on Solo bombing, but in my opinion, Kathleen Kennedy, Rian Johnshon and TLJ are the real problem. I don't think they get it, they think Solo is the misstep.

TLJ and Rian Johnson are TRASH, that is what needs to be shelved.

Maybe they'll figure it out after Episode IX bombs, too. Then again, they could blame JJ for that and Rian Johnson's trilogy might be too far in production to cancel by that point. If Rian Johnson's movie bombs too, then they should finally get the picture and either cancel the other 2 movies or give them to someone else to finish.

I legit liked RO and TFA. But I absolutely despised TLJ and have no interest in Solo after hearing just how muddy its reviews are. But yeah, they should really look into the root of the issue. And EA isnt helping by pumping out shitty Star wars games

Worried? About Star Wars? That's like being worried about a corpse. The damage is already done, can't get much worse than this.

Can't get much worse?
Challenge accepted.

IX storyline leaked:

* Luke was a nazi all along, as was the entire rebel force.
Queue ghost luke, ghost obi, ghost yoda appearing in a dream sequence all wearing swastikas.
* Chewie was an undercover sith lord all this time. He and Rose Tico lures all the remaining rebels into the millenium falcon
then blows it up, killing all remaining rebel leaders.
* Millenium Falcon being blown up will be shown in different angles, in slow motion, for 15 full minutes.

This all takes 30-35 minutes.

The remainder of he movie is :
* Chewie becomes emperor for killing all rebels
* Tico becomes his queen.
* Chewie and Tico have celebration sex for the next 45 minutes.

What is more progressive than a dog + Asian woman sex scene in a PG13 movie?
And we need the Asian audience. They like dogs and they like asian women, right, what can go wrong?

This would be worse, way worse than TLJ. What do I win?
