Final Fantasy XVI gets ESRB Rating (it’s spicy)

Is about their intentions to make a mature narrative. Hopefully this translates in less "anime" cliches, Better dialog, better character arcs, better story and storytelling overall.
I'm trying to figure out how an M rating suggests all of that. The LOTR trilogy managed to tell a great story without an R rating.

FF under Enix has been pretty bad. Let go of nostalgia.

Sure, and it's interesting that they've pushed things this far.

However I'm a believer in long-running franchises (especially mainline ones like this one) holding some kind of a consistent range for the age group the series has been known for even as things change and evolve, and "M-rated" doesn't feel right to me for Final Fantasy. (Albeit what's described seems pretty light for M-rated territory, and I have a feeling they will appeal before release.) Stranger of Paradise went too far in that direction and that was one of many things that turned me off of that game, but it was a side-game so whatever. (Sort of like how Andor added "shit" lines and almost had the first "fuck" in Star Wars, but it's deep-canon rather than mainline; the series still doesn't and probably shouldn't have a Rated R-type product, even though on the flipside it has lots of Rated G content for little kids.) This is a numbered FF, and IMO those work best as games made for general audiences. I'm not at all opposed to an M-rated RPG (blowjobs and bloodshed in games could be a bulletpoint in a game by another name), but Final Fantasy feels like it should strive for a certain standard wherever they take the concept.

I guess we'll see if this is the new way of things whenever XVII shows up...
The original game was released December 18,1987. Their fan base has grown up I’m glad they finally realized it.

This series deserves to move into mature territory. As a fan since the original, I can’t agree with you or anything you said in the slightest.

I have dreamed of a more mature FF game for decades.

I really like the more mature direction and the fact Yoshida seems so proud of the story in the interviews makes me really excited about playing this.
With this and FF7R Rebirth, FF series fans will be really happy in the near future.

““I'd be happy to show you…provided I can afford it” and “…thank you for your service. My chamber is just upstairs." Some characters are depicted with partially exposed breasts and buttocks. The words “f**k” and “sh*t” are heard in the game.”

Final fantasy 16: the wild hunt.

It's a franchise that's generally lighthearted in tone.
Isn't this entirely dependent on which Final Fantasy games someone played?

Like wouldn't someone who's played FF 13, 14, and 15 think of the franchise very differently than someone who's played 4, 5, and 6 or even 7, 8, and 9? I remember multiple games having moments of massive genocide, environmental disasters, stabbings, murder, betrayal, psychotic breaks, suicide, existential crisis, overthrown governments, forced/arranged marriages, implied rape, child endangerment, father issues, mother issues, sibling issues, etc.

The great thing about most of the FF's were that they tried to keep things lighthearted enough through a ton of dark themes. It was a weird mixture that worked, but it doesn't entirely make it one or the other.

Not to forget that Delita gets himself murdered (at least attempted) in the end by his misgiving wife because of his constant manipulations.

But no sir, this is random western stuff that has never existed in Final Fantasy. How dare you.:messenger_face_screaming:
Really wish they would bring War of the Lions version over to Switch and PS5.

It was in the GeForce leak so its most likely happening. I don’t know if I have another Tactics playthrough in me unfortunately

You know you’ve played the game too damn much when you’re making Ramza into a samurai/gunner/archer

No one is salty. But this isn't GTA. It's a franchise that's generally lighthearted in tone. So this change in direction isn't well regarded.

I don’t know about that

For one, the entirely of Final Fantsy Tacticts and Type-0 are gritty and cynical. Blood, violence, countless of deaths and betrayals

The very first opening scene in Type-0 has a soldier and his Chocobo bleeding out completely

Many of the mainline theme plots are based off of characters dealing with existential crisis/depression. There’s also other things, like the destruction of Cleyra and Lindblum, Vivi watching his friends be killed in front of him by his own kind, Kefka destroying the whole world making the people left on it live in misery, the attempted forced rape between Aeris and Red XIII

These might be a pale comparison to what is to come in XVI especially considering the graphical limitations in these games but I don’t believe Final Fantasy is really that lighthearted as some people might say it is

It's not like the general audience has a PS5 right now

Glad FF is taking a mature direction, the IP needs a fresh start after the past 10 years of vomit inducing stench.

Love the look of the combat too, Hope there's more impact to hits though as I felt sometimes with FF7R that enemies kinda just stood there getting wailed on.

Sucks I won’t be able to enjoy this, my wife put parental controls on my ps5 since she doesn’t want me indoctrinated with violence. Hoping for a teen mode but otherwise anything mature I’m not allowed to play

That because there is a huge double standard against Japanese games when comes having any type of nudity and sex in games. Remember how Dragon's Crown got lot of shit over its character designs from western media, meanwhile TLOU2 had full on sex and nudity but it considered "brave".

Heck when Catherine came out, there are people who thought it was "porn" game even tho it had barely any nudity or sex.

Here is another example: Strange Journey Redux cover got censored because is character pointing gun.
maxresdefault.jpg

But in western games thats no problem ...
524742-red-dead-redemption-ii-xbox-one-front-cover.jpg

Well that has a lot to do with how Sega censors their selves in the west on certain things. Like the Yakuza 3 remaster cover not having Kiryu smoke....

Its odd to then point out TLOU2 or RDR2 as....SEGA THEMSELVES is choosing to do that, what does those other games have to do with Sega's choice?

That isn't a "double standard against Japanese games" that is merely Sega's choice vs Rockstar, Sony etc.

So will it have nudity, sex? Who knows, that has more to do with if Square is ok with that then if its Japanese or something, lots of those...um games exist on Steam with no issue lol So I don't get this "double standard against Japanese games" as where the fuck is any of that shit when it comes to those sex games? lol

Are you sure that isn't simply the publisher making a choice to change that in the west or?

I LOVED FFVIIR but scenes like this becomes weird without any blood.

Agreed, but to be fair that is something the DLC thing adds

So maybe they changed their minds.

I mean they are not shy about this in FFXVI so I wouldn't be worried. An M Rating is more then welcome.

It's as if all the people claiming Game of thrones did the whole political/war backstabbing theme was not done before them and never played at the very least the first two Suikoden games or Final Fantasy Tactics, which has already been mentioned. I am sure there are others that came out even earlier than those examples.

The overworld music haunts me in my dreams after playing 120 hours of that game. I thankfully found out in the last 3rd you could change it to classic music which helped until i got tired of that one too
yeah, the S version with DQ8 overworld music is way better, but the rest of the OST isnt that great though. Just look at Persona 5 and Xeno 2 , same year, amazing OST.

gladly Koichi Sugiyama is gone, maybe we ll have a great OST in the new DQ12

Cool! One of the most memorable moments in FFVII was Jenova leaving the bodies and blood trails in the Shrina Hq it was disappointing we got the silly pink goo in the remake.

I also found Odin nuking Cleyra pretty haunting in FF9 didn't see that coming.

Did the Intergrade edition add blood to the main game as well?

Shit, not even Dragon Quest is sticking to tradition with XII. They gonna have fucking in that too

DQ will have even better, aka the classic puff-puff.

We really need infos about this tho. Been replaying S version, what an underrated masterpiece this game is.

I agree, but dont think its underrated. I think its recognized as one of teh best JRPG’s of the last generation

So how long until the PC version drops do you think? next christmas? or christmas of 2024?

As a bit of a sailor mouth IRL I’m all for swearing!

Also, guys, this is BD3, which stems from stuff like FFT, FFXII, FFXIV. It has a different flavor to the FF’s Kitase is involved in.

Finally, the first M-rated mainline entry.
I remember expecting FF Versus XIII / FFXV to be the first one back then, but that never came to be with the revisions.

Good to see that Square Enix, or at least Naoki Yoshi & Hiroshi Takai acknowledge their adult FF fans, rather than just appealing to the broader audience again.
Yoshi-P fans are starting to really annoy me.

Yoshi-P said that he made XVI an action game because it seems more popular. Is that not “appealing to the broader audience”? I remember his interview quip about Horizon and God of War also sounding like he aimed to appeal to a broader audience, though I can’t be sure about that.

Yoshi-P fan? What the hell are you even talking about?

I grew up playing Final Fantasy games since the SNES & PS1 era. My favorite ones aren't even FFXIV related.
I like what I've seen so far and I'm excited about it as a life-long FF fan. You need to relax with the generalization because people aren't agreeing with you.

If FF16 turns out to be the FF: BERSERK Edition I crave then I'm all in. But I imagine it will still be pretty tame.

By far the best Final Fantasy game to date is still FF9. Not a single one has come close.

And while FFXIV makes for a fun diversion in it's storytelling which is slowly getting worse, FF11 is still the better MMO overall.

I think my favorite SE game they've put out is still Dragon Quest XI S.

Fair enough, I did generalize. However, my point about Yoshi-P still stands; he did say he made the game have action combat because it’s more popular (not that I mind, as I love both turn-based and real-time combat).

I loved FFXI up until they released Abyssea and made it brain dead easy. The original grind of FFXI up until zilart and it’s play style was so unique. Loved swapping in different pieces of gear on macro to accompany my aegis shield bash.

I have no issue with that personally. I also love turn-based and real-time combat systems, particularly when they're well-designed and engaging.
The fact that Ryota Suzuki is the combat designer for FFXVI also gives me hope that it'll be much more technical and fun to master over the course of the game, rather than being a mindless button masher.
