What is "On the Bullhorn"?
"On the Bullhorn" is your opportunity to get on that soapbox that TToB vacated. Each month I'll leave this space empty, and it's your job to fill it, Comic-GAF, with whatever you want. Got a book you want to promote? A writer? An artist? Got something to get off your chest, a pet peeve or storytelling trope you can't keep silent about? Just want to rant for a bit? Then type it up, provide some pics, and send it to me via PM so I can post it in the OP.

Or don't, and this can stay blank. Up to you.

This month's "On the Bullhorn" segment is brought to you by fellow GAF member frye, and can be found below in the first reply. Be sure and check it out! :D

SpD81R8.png

Spoilers. In the age of digital comics, they are increasingly becoming an issue in these threads, as the drive to be first to discuss the week's releases overrides common sense and good posting etiquette. So over the coming weeks and months, the members of Comic GAF will be collaborating on and will eventually be implementing a system of general rules for avoiding spoilers on new comics in the Comics OT thread. But for now, please abide by the temporary guidelines outlined below. And remember, you are being watched and judged by your peers.

1. Discussion of newly released comics that involves specific plot details shall be accompanied at all times by the appropriate use of the
tag function.
2. Direct posting of full-page images from newly released comics using the tags is strictly prohibited, and outgoing links to such should be accompanied by the appropriate spoiler warnings.
3. Direct posting of images or spoilers from comics that have yet to be released is strictly prohibited, and outgoing links to such should be accompanied by the appropriate spoiler warnings.
4. Covers, solicitation copy, and/or promotional materials shall not be considered spoilers and are allowed, unless their content involves specific plot details; in those cases, outgoing links with spoiler warnings should be used.
5. The unmarked posting of spoilers related to comics will be allowed after a period of one week (Wednesday to Wednesday) from that comic's release. (NOTE: Longer? -Spike)
6. Members of Comic GAF are expected at all times to exercise common sense and polite discretion as a matter of courtesy to fellow posters. I know, tough one.
7. If you are unsure of whether or not posting something would constitute a spoiler, err on the side of caution and use the
tags.

In short, don't try to be Stephanie Brown. Don't become... The Spoiler. For one thing, DC doesn't hate you that much.

...Maybe. ;p

Happy reading!

Fatale #1-13
Ed Brubaker, Sean Phillips, Dave Stewart, Elizabeth Breitweiser
Image Comics
2012-2013

w3FfXri.png

Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips are two guys who have been collaborating pretty much continuously for over a decade now and the body of work they have accumulated together is incredible. Even misfires like that first Incognito series are only misfires when you’re putting it next to comics like Sleeper and Bad Night and Last of the Innocent.

What I find most interesting about their latest comic, Fatale, is how it moves away from what we’ve come to expect from a Brubaker/Phillips collaboration. It feels like the work of creators who have done hundreds of pages together (and become near automatic as a result) trying to push past their comfort zone. The doomed protagonist trying to escape his circumstances is replaced with an opaque and mysterious woman whose own doom is not so clear cut. Instead, she’s the last one standing and the first one out of town when everything goes to shit. The 4-6 issue arc-based structure of Criminal and Incognito and the television-based structure of Sleeper has been jettisoned and replaced with something much more longform - Fatale started off the bat as a 12 issue miniseries that then got increased to 15 issues before being upgraded into a full on it’ll-be-over-when-it’s-over deal. They’ve got a new publisher and it’s a genre they haven’t quite tackled together yet. Val Staples isn’t colouring anymore. Things are different.

zR87igU.png

It makes sense, though. While Fatale has been marketed as and ostensibly is a horror comic, the idea that it could ever be as fucking terrifying as those last few issues of Sleeper were - claustrophobic and tense and frightening and exhilarating all at once and with a genuine sense that no matter what he did Holden Carver was going to fall and that he was going to fall hard while men you detested would end up walking away with no consequences - is hard to believe. Certainly for me, anyways.

Fatale’s approach to horror, then, is different from Sleeper. It is not about being trapped in a bad situation waiting for the other shoe to drop, heading irrevocably to disaster the entire time - it is about the slow burn. It is atmosphere over dramatic irony. Jo’s ending isn’t necessarily going to be Holden’s (we knew intuitively quite early on that for all his machinations he was never going to get what he wanted). Horror for Fatale is all about the unknown and how scary it is not to know. It is about how scary it is when you find out that you don’t know and how much that you don’t know. Fatale is about unknowable forces hounding you to the ends of the earth for unknowable reasons. We don't really know Jo's past. It follows that we don’t really know her future either.

The first ten issues are shaky. I’ll be the first to admit that. They are still good - certainly enough to have kept me reading along anyways - but the balance between the fear of the unknown and just plain treading water isn’t quite there yet. At the same time, that is what I expect from two creators as good as Brubaker and Phillips are trying to do something different. They should not be completely successful if they are genuinely trying to up their game like this - if they were it would be a sign that they were not pushing hard enough.

One of the reasons why Frank Miller will always be one of my favourite comics dudes is how hard he was pushing himself to do different things. He isn’t perfect but Daredevil to Wolverine to Ronin to Dark Knight to Elektra Lives Again are all quantum leaps from the previous work. All of them. And then once he’s perfected that style? He moves on. Sin City is him proving (to himself?) that he’s still good even when the secret ingredient (Lynn Varley) isn’t there to elevate his work and he does it by inventing a whole new style for himself. 300 is his return to colour and it’s both an evolution and a synthesis. The Dark Knight Strikes Again is Miller as an older dude, 15 years removed from his most celebrated comic ever, just having a grand old time - but not repeating himself.

Fatale wouldn’t be a comic worth talking about or reading if it wasn’t succeeding. For all Miller’s experimentation, a ton of it paid off which is why we’re still talking about him and why he’s still a big deal no matter what dumb shit he says next.

Like I said, the first ten issues are shaky. The next three though - they each condense all the parts you like about the series and deliver them in satisfying self-contained stories. These three issues expand the mythology of the world enough that it is captivating in spite of its incompleteness and give you all the death and destruction these women bring to the people around them in their pursuit of her in an adroit use of the format. My favourite part of these issues is in #13: the way Brubaker and Phillips effortlessly give us significant moments in this woman’s life in single panels on a single page is perfect.

XmVbv52.png

Everything that made the series great is here - all the brutality and the depravity - just better than before. I’m looking forward to the next Criminal arc just as much as anyone else, but this? This is more than fine in the meantime.

Well I finally decided to give Transformers: More than meets the eye a read, mainly I was just reading Robots in Disguise and MTMTE never interested me for some reason.
Sat down, read all the issues available and this series has been magnificent and a fun read!
I love Swerve's humor, Whirl is a psychopath, Tailgate is rather adorable, and I don't even know what's in store next!
Just the idea of Cybertronians drifting through space and the whacky adventures they go through is so fun I don't want it to ever end.

Fuck yeah--new thread! Thanks Spike. I always look forward to the new monthly comic thread.

Great write-up, Frye. I keep putting Fatale off to the side, hoping to get to it but ultimately forgetting. I think I'll dive into it, though--seems like a good time and the trades are pretty cheap. Also, I really liked the first Incognito. Like, really really liked.

Whenever Casanova comes back, I'd love to do a write-up for it, because that shit deserves it and is the secret best Fraction book.

Does Comixology update midnight local time? Or does it update sometime later?

I usually buy my comics the next morning and I'm itching to read SSM... :/

Midnight. Books should start appearing in the next hour or so, at least from DC. Those from other publishers will be up much later.

What books are must-reads this FCBD? I have the usual suspects down on a standing order, but I'm not sure what else I should check out. The Mouse Guard hard cover from FCBD 2012 was just lovely. I noticed the format is not being repeated this year though.

Some spoiler free thoughts on today's haul

Animal Man: I'm so happy to see this return back to character driven storytelling after the mess that was Rotworld (which even Lemire confessed went on too long). And something good(?) finally happens to Buddy!

Aquaman: Another consistently solid issue from Johns and Pelletier (who has done a nice job replacing Ivan Reis). A couple nice twists at the end. I have a feeling that Arthur will.be washing his hands of the surface world post Trinity War.

Earth-2: Probably the best book to come out of the N52, Robinson and Scott knock it out of the park on a monthly basis. A solid conclusion to the introduction of Fate.

Green Arrow: This book probably suffered the most with the transition to the N52, but three issues in Lemire has it on track and moving forward while laying the groundwork for new character mythology. It doesn't hurt to have Andrea Sorrentino drawing it either. Lemire took another step closer to revealing the significance of the Island and what Ollie's fate was supposed to be.

I still have All-New X-Men as well, but Marvel isn't updated on Comixology early enough to read on my morning bus commute.

Nice.

It's actually been my favourite of the two ongoings since the start. The humour coupled with how dense of a read the book is each month makes it one of the most worthwhile purchases I get. No flipping through this in a few minutes like some books. I also love the focus on some lesser known Transformers.

Hawkeye #10

Katie-Kate... Looking pretty good there.
The Clown is definitely a nice addition. Parallels with him and Clint are nice and glad to see just how screwed up he is from the consequences of the last two issues. Also glad that I did spot him early in the last issue, since it was confirmed in this one.

God bless Comixology for being updated around 6am PST (or maybe earlier) so that I can buy books before work.

What happens when comics get cancelled? Do writers get advance warning to hurriedly wrap up loose ends or is it just cut off immediately and there's no conclusion?

both kind of, sometimes a little of both

I'm pretty sure they could have let them tie up more stuff since Legion of Three Worlds too foooooorever to finish

Walking Dead #109 is the first issue in awhile that i really didn't like, too much was focused on filling characters in on Rick's plans and then a non-cliffhanger.

FF #6: the tone and art make this book one of my favorites, buy it dummies.

The outcome is crazy considering the tiny little thing that happened to cause it lol...
we're talking about nightwing death right?

Funny how it took THAT to stop all the fighting...which had the purpose of actually killing the heroes in the first place.
Also dat Harley.

I don't typically stray from Marvel and DC, but a few titles from the other publishers kinda caught my eye. Do you guys have any opinions on the following?

- East of West - I really dug Hickman at one point, but his recent Avengers books had worn me out. I love the idea of sci-fi western though and the cover really caught my eye.

- Akaneiro - I don't know anything about the author or artist on this one, but the concept seems kinda interesting. I enjoyed American McGee's take of Alice (also helped that it was a wonderful game), so the whole Red Riding Hood mythology might work with him, too.

- Lobster Johnson: Satan Smells a Rat - Don't necessarily want opinions on this particular title, but on Hellboy in general. I always wanted to get into it since the mythology and characters appealed to me, but given how long it's been around, I suspect there's just too much by now to catch up on.

- Mouse Guard: Legends of the Guard - I think I read the very first of the series awhile ago (I remember them fighting a snake in the opening parts), which I really enjoyed. Never stuck with it though. Is it still running strong? I might keep it in mind to pick up again at some point.

- The Shadow Year One - Big fan of Matt Wagner's work, so I'm pretty interested in checking this out, too. Any good?

...any insight would be appreciated! Thanks.
