How badly would you have to be burned to decide to never preorder again?

What would have to happen for you to seriously consider never preordering a game again?
Might be difficult to imagine something that bad actually happening, but try to think about it

This should go without saying, but this is addressed to those who still regularly preorder

there's no reason to pre-order. I only pre-order if I know for a fact I want to play the game and I usually do that the day before, so it's hardly a pre-order. By then reviews should be available, which informs the decision. I don't pre-order games like 8 months out.

Elden Ring may be a game I "pre-order" after reviews come out, but that's a game I plan on playing regardless. Worse case scenario, I just refund it if it's broken. No risk involved.

Why would I preorder anything in general. I've never ever went to a shop on launch day to have a game be sold out.

For me to never preorder it would have to be a situation where someone makes revenue and interest off my money before I receive a good or service, while still not knowing if the future good or service is of high quality. So kinda a stretch.

I don’t pre-order. I don’t see the point in putting up full price 4 to 6 months before a game is released only to sit and watch a doomsday clock on my console.

I've had my disappointments (Mass Effect Andromeda) but I don't think I'll ever stop pre-ordering. I like collector's editions and without a pre-order it's not guaranteed that I'd get one. Last example was Horizon Forbidden West. Besides, I'm generally fairly good at gauging if I'll enjoy a game.

I try to avoid pre-ordering, but if someone announced a remaster or remake of Deus Ex I would pre-order the second it’s available. Same with any Soulsborne game. That’s pretty much it though, I don’t really care for most AAA games these days.

Although I do remember when Game sold out of San Andreas and had queues going down the road and round the corner.

Whilst I'm mega annoyed with cyberpunk 2077 and still patiently awaiting the next gen upgrade as the game remains forever sealed on my shelf, I've realised I have still continued to preorder titles that interest me since, I'm usually rarely disappointed with my purchases though.

Maybe something will come out and make me stop preordering one day.

(I'm still preordering games that are on game pass day one too, what is wrong with me) lol

It's directly related to financial loss and that number is a moving target. Right now, somewhere in the triple digits of total loss for me to rule the whole thing out.

It didn't take anything to make me never preorder. The fact that games are digitally distributed and don't sell out any more made it completely unnecessary to ever preorder a game again. The only reason to preorder most of the time is to get some sort of useless digital bauble.

Suppose I pre order a game I've been really excited about. It's the PC version. Game releases. I download but game crashes at launch. I update my drivers, reinstall the game, etc but still no dice. I try everything I can to fix the issue but the game still keeps crashing for some reason. So basically in a situation where I am completely unable to play the game would then deter me from pre ordering ever again. Personally I haven't ever pre ordered a game, so its never been an issue for me.

These days, I only pre-order if the game has been already released in Japan and get great reception - then I pre-order when it gets localization announcement.
I don't pre-order JP version of the game of my interest though - used to back in the days - but just too damn expensive, and I'm becoming excessively cheaper by age.

Only game I preordered was Uncharted 2.
I was so impressed by the trailer when I saw it, but the game absolutely delivered.

Same game as i would've bought anyways, so I've never done it after that. Also I like to buy physical as at launch disc versions are much cheaper.

Hasn’t been a decent preorder bonus for years.

I only preorder when GameStop is doing a decent deal like +30% on trades when they go towards a preorder.

It would have to be cyberpunk levels of burn by every single company I'm willing to preorder from.

For example, I'll never pre order from CDprojekt, or from Blizzard ever again.

From software, Square Enix, and some others still get my money no problem though.

No sense in preordering anymore unless it's a specific game you really want. They offer very little incentives to do so. And if there is a Special Edition these days it'll get scooped up by scalpers for resale at 2x-3x the price.

They used to offer preorder bonuses but it seem the only real bonus these days is to play the game on Day 0.

And digital release windows are such a joke if the game releases at like 6pm and you have to not only download the game but install it too. Gets worse with a day 1 patch.

If it doesn't have pre-load functionality it's pretty much never worth it.

Watchdogs 2014 then Dishonored 2 on PC, which is still a great game but the PC release was bad for 3 months, and now i dont pre order anymore, too many bug filled releases on PC now, better off waiting.

Pretty bad. Over the years I've become more cautious about preordering, and more selective. I think the end result has been pretty positive. A lot of the time I do it if there's a price I can't pass up, or an awesome physical collector's edition. It's also a title I have to be SUPER hyped about, I don't really go for any moderate excitement titles, haha.

I preordered Back4Blood, and I regret that. But, my heart was in the right place, haha. I think I'll enjoy it for what it is, but man, I wanted it to be so much more than what I've experienced so far.

Cyberpuk 2077 was such a burn that in fact i still havent pre-ordered anything since then. My mentality is also switching and i dont have that FOMO anymore. Im ok waiting for games to drop in price to purchase them.

I still might make some pre-orders for games that i really want to play day 1, since pre-ordering physical games saves me some money.

Ive never been burned by a preorder so I guess the question doesn't really apply to me.

The only game I can remember pre ordering is Ocarina of Time.

For digital games I cant see a reason to pre order.

I buy games on Steam. I can refund them with less than 2 hours of play time and less than two weeks of ownership, no questions asked. I have no problem with pre-ordering.

i get pre-ordering physical stuff, especially if it's something that'll suffer from shortage issues.

I don't understand the point of pre-ordering digital games however.

I only preorder when it's cheaper for PC (100% digital).

I pre-order for physical so I can have it delivered on launch date. Often I pre-orde one week before.

Also some games long term because they mantain the price even if exchange rates fuck up. For example, I saved $10 USD on Spider-man.

Don't pre-order unless it's a really niche release that will end up having limited quantities in-store. Not really fussed otherwise, Death Stranding Director's Cut aside
