He says it's supposed to be future-proof huh. In this future, do things never fault, or is this more "i have a dream" scenario?

Anyone think that Microsoft might be using "the cloud" to extend the life of the platform? Performance increases all the time, negating the need for a console upgrade? That's going to be super awkward to develop around.

I'm also now worried that Sony had the same idea when they bought Gaikai.

I really hate this new buzzword, "future proof". My BIL bought a PC that he excitedly said was "future proof". I didn't have the heart to tell him.

My god. I'm already fucking tired of hearing "Power of the Cloud". It's not quite as bad as "8GB GDDR5", but it's up there.

So tired of buzzwords.

Bad reveal and all, I'm willing to wait until E3 to give this thing my final judgement, but it's going to take a miracle at this point to make me want to buy one. There's nothing I've heard about this console that makes me want to purchase it from what I know about it so far.

Well... day by day it's becoming crystal clear that MS is going all digital-distribution and streamed games next gen. In fact... I just see them releasing revisions of the XBone without a blu-ray drive and calling it something else and saying the next-to-next generation has arrived with Cloud games.

Can we go back to the old days where you paid for gaming, and the executives stayed out of the way.

Their vision sucks.

Dude, the cloud is bullshit. It will have no affect on game performance. It's just a cover to make it sound like always online is a good idea. What are they going to say when PS4 games come out looking better than MS games? When multiplatform games run better on PS4?

They'll have a full cloud-streaming service within a couple of years. Sony are going the same way.

If only the games were future-proof. They'll be unplayable when the servers get taken down at the end of the generation.

It must be the future!

The "servers" will never go down. Magic cloud is a future-proof entity inside both the internet and your Hal-box 2.0. In the not so distant future it will also be lurking in the mandatory-to-breathe implants we'll all receive.

More inside the article.

http://www.polygon.com/2013/5/27/43...none-the-risks-of-an-internet-required-gaming

Don Mattrick, president of Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft, told me that the decision to require internet for the Xbox One was driven by a desire to create a console unleashed from the technical limitations of today's not-entirely-connected society. Microsoft had a decision to make, he said; either create a console planted in the present or look to the future and create a device built on the concept that one day the internet will be as available as electricity or telephone service.

"Gamers want the best experiences possible — and they want a future-proof system," he told Polygon.

"Now, with Xbox One, we're stretching the canvas again so creators can design for the cloud with every game they make," he said. "In the next decade, every great game will tap the power of the cloud to deliver richer, more immersive worlds. We have a great offline game system in Xbox 360 that gets better when it's connected. We could have made another offline console, but then offline would have been the lowest common denominator design point for developers. We chose to take the progressive path."

WOW. this is literally the most bullshit, corporate doublespeak answer to an honest question I've ever heard.

If I'm always online, I get more McDonalds Wrap ads plastered all over my dashboard! Everyone wins.

MS wouldn't do that.. there will just be gaming-related ads of course. why would there be McDonalds ads embedded in a gaming console operating system? that would be like Idiocracy or something.

Thats their pitch. I read it as gimping single player and offline play ever more over time, even if their cloud talk is totally above board.

Lets not be coy: Microsoft wants to kill offline gaming.

Maybe their hand is forced, maybe they aren't alone, but its pretty damn obvious. And the majority of my game time is single player, so there's no way I can support that.

There are two options available, basically. Either you make retail games unplayable when the disc's not in, even if the game has been installed on the harddrive, or you use online registration and DRM.

I sure know which option I prefer. If I think I'll be playing a game often (BF4 etc.) then I'll buy that title as a digital download.

But what Microsoft is doin here, blatanty lying, is certainly not the way to go.

Do you guys think Xbone version of 3rd part games will be severly gimped because they must be made with the lowest common denominator in mind with the offline PS4?

Don't want this. Don't want internet mandatory for all games.

Don't want to be told how many years I can play a game before it's dead.

Nope.

If that comes true I guess I'll go retro games only, there are enough I've never played to last the rest of my life.

So it's either always online required, or this "cloud" PR speak is all bullshit. Every 24 hour check in would not be able to use "the infinite power of the cloud."

Yep, that's what got me.
It's bullshit either way, you get always online+cloud, or occasional online (no/little cloud).

Bullshit either way.

"Cloud!" is now the official MS response to any question hinting at the negative reception of the Xbone.

That was my initial reaction, but some computation can be offloaded to remote servers if it's done sufficiently in advance. I'm not a game engine programmer so I can't really explain how it would be implemented.

Looks like you are online to me. Hating MS is the cool thing to do around here. Kind of like hating on Justin Bieber.
... really? Like, really?
