The Xbox Story, how Microsoft Squandered Their Reputation Overnight.

They tried to cater to the hardcores two generations in a row and all the sudden they came out with full fledged multimedia box and spent half the conference talking about non-gaming features.
And that used game fee..

Really sick of these foolish threads. How any of you take video games so seriously is beyond me. You won't even wait three weeks for MS to show you the games?

We've been waiting since 2010 - it's been almost 8 years since Xbox 360 released.

They've had 8 years to plan for this, and we get TV rammed down our throats.

The general outlook is looking pretty grim, going by the reactions of the gaming press, gamers in general and GAF.

It's not even being referenced as a console anymore, doesn't that tell it's own story.

Jesus...another one of these threads.

Just because it is able to do all these TV like functions, does not make it just a one trick pony. It is a games machine and we will see really good games for it. I know not everyone likes what they showed or it did not interest those here on gaf, being that we are a gaming community, but I would wait till e3 and later to judge it completely.

Ok, this is kinda harsh. I understand all of the negative press around the console, but Microsoft entered this business to penetrate the living room. That goal is being realized with the Xbox One.

I think the problem is calling it an Xbox when it's kind of hard to call it a dedicated gaming machine. I hardly think the backlash would be this bad if they were just like, "Here's a new media hub! If you're a gamer, it also plays all your favorite franchises! Introducing the Microsoft One!"

EDIT: Should specify the press conference would have to not have been pitched to gamers as well... Just make it a general Microsoft conference.

Honestly I felt that around 2008 the Xbox 360 started changing they got rid of all the people behind the original vision and basically started developing this attitude like "yea we got all these bitches right where we want them!" and they seem to think all the people who bought xbox 360 will automatically buy the new Xbox + they will somehow get casual people who don't play games. It's a very similar mistake that Sony made with the PS3 and to an extent Iwata and Nintendo made with the Wii U.

Things like shoving tons advertisements on the dashboard, spending more and more time at E3 not talking about games and not changing the value of Xbox Live after PS+ and after PSN and Wii U launched free networks were all warning signs of what was coming.

360 was where it all went downhill.

I remember back when I read gaming mags there was this massive reveal of the original XBOX, and it all sounded so great, what they were trying to accomplish. Games were the focus, pure and simple.

Then came the 360 which gave us all of this other bullshit, which is now reaching a fever pitch with the XBone. Hopefully XBone fails spectacularly and Microsoft either gets back to a pure gaming focus or exits the console world entirely.

I can't help but to laugh (and cheer) at the way the internet has responded to this. I truly was worried that people would just let "locking used games behind a paywall" go the way they did with Project $10 and Online Passes. People are finally standing up for consumer rights.

I watched Angry Joe give his YouTube opinion on this. It was great.

LiveBox. Or some such would fit this device.
Xbox (360) is a gaming machine in my mind, with various extras, but primarily a gaming device.

I didn't even mention the TV functions or say that I'm flustered over that.

How many of you are skipping over my OP to bitch about the title of the thread?

How about not even waiting for Microsoft's E3 showing, but waiting for Sony's; we know less about the PS4 at this point than we do about Xbone.

But if Kinect really rubs you the wrong way for some reason, or if you don't like having to connect a new device to the internet, then there's no convincing you. In 2013, I think neither of these things are really that big of a deal.

my first reaction after the unveiling was definitely one of disappointment and I was sure that i'd be going with sony this gen. while that may still end up being true, the reality is that it's way, way too soon to say that microsoft is fucked. wait till E3 to make a more informed judgement call. we need to see the fuckin games!

Microsoft didn't squander shit. There is positive press all over the place for the XB1. This thing is going to sell well.

So much effort and reaction to a one hour presentation that didn't show much.
I think people should calm down and wait for e3.

At this point, I don't even care what they show at e3.

I went from using the 360 as my primary gaming machine to being completely turned off of the next xbox before seeing one game. Their policies and focus are just awful.

not gonna happen that way no matter how many threads the Anti-MS mob keeps making about it

I feel sorry for the OP, it is pretty clear people aren't reading it and just reading the title and then looking at the image.

You clearly didn't read the OP since he doesn't have a problem with the TV functions. The Always-online crap and stupid policies like the used games fee (which to be fair still isn't clear, but it doesn't need to be vague at all) makes the XBOX ONE dead in a sense.

I have nothing against the gamers who enjoy games that are on xbox, but just for the company itself.

I urge you to, please, don't support the soul rape that is kinect 2.0

It's insane the amount of jihad sony fanboys that are crawling the web these last couple of days. Mods are on vacation (not necessarily here but on other forums) and SDF types are letting their balls hang out.

I'm cool off of all the trolling.

Jihad, really? All sony fanboys? Strong words.

Perhaps most of us see through the PR double speak, compilation of evasions and anti consumer policies?

But you can chill out on cloud one.

I'm pretty sure most people on these forums already hated Microsoft before the Xbone event. All of this is just more of the same.

People will always hate microsoft.

That event just gave them ammo for awhile. It will stop as always.

That confirmation bias. Hold on to your butts boys and girls.

Let me ask you, what benefit does a mandatory Kinect connection provide to the gamer?

I swear I still can't believe this is real. All the stuff they are doing have been talked about by gamers that would be terrible for a new system. Then comes Xbox One and it literally has everyone's gripes and worries on it like it was a huge middle finger to the community. It's like Microsoft was never reading all the tragic horror stories of people's worries of the new generation consoles.

Even if E3 shows me some unbelievable games, heck even Conker one of my most favorite games of all time. I just can't accept all these rules to play that game no matter how much I want to.

Unless Microsoft disregard all this crap (and not give us another maybe you don't understand and let me give you a rundown of it so you'll take the bad news easier story, freakin Phil) and bring me some games, i can't even imagine being remotely interested in this console.

If the shoe doesn't fit you then don't wear it. Other than that, yes, jihad fanboys.

Sqaundered? The system isn't even out yet. The internet does tend to... blow things out of proportion.

Now if the Xbone starts to see less-than-projected sales, similar to the Wii U, then there may be a problem.

It allows the xbox live network to recognize and tailor ads towards whoever is using the system at the time so MS can get more revenue for their ad buys. Oh wait, that not really a benefit.

Gamers writing off a console before seeing actual games. Well, before seeing more than a couple seconds of a couple games. RIP in peace, gamers.

For a forum that claims its all about the games. Some people sure like sure to pass judgment before any games are shown. Shit wait for E3.

I said reputation, not sales.

Man, this generation of posters on Neogaf are too dramatic.

Maybe I'm just old, but I don't recall breakdowns or blow ups or the amount of unnecessary ridiculous threads when PS2 (Playstation Wonderful lol), GCN or XB was announced. We talked and evaluated games while Drinky shat on Nintendo fanboys for nostalgia love.

Regardless of the op's intentions, still usual suspects chiming in on all these threads as if they were actually ever going to consider an MS console but NOW they're disappointed... Bullshit.

It's a mob of loud people thinking they can kill the entire system on GAF and all it is doing is cluttering up the forum with "me too yea they suck" posts

if it's some loud minority why is the poll so universally negative? why aren't all the GAFfers who love the xbox one clicking the 9/10 8/10 or 7/10 buttons?

You see the effects of a loud minority when people are shitting up threads complaining about MGS4 but that game still winds up on GAF top 10 lists twice. that's a loud minority, this shit right here? this is just how it is.

I wore a Balmertar with ONLY ON XBOX before the event in hopes none of the negative rumors were true. Every single negative rumor is true, and together constitutes the antithesis of what I will spend money on in a media product. If somehow Xbone was the only way to play games, I still would not buy it.
