- Developers can choose which resources they want to use
- GG chose to have 30FPS at 1080p
- They still like 3D, wont confirm if Killzone Shadow Fall will support it

One of the things that stood out to me was how static the whole environment looked.
Maybe I need to watch the footage again but when I saw the KZ2 footage for the first time, two things really stood out to me:

One was the destruction in the environment. I know it was just aesthetic, but rubble was flung everywhere following explosions, walls were chipping under fire. It just made the whole thing feel 'alive'.

The second thing was the over the top death animations. The way the enemies would violently flail around while you pumped them full of bullets.

Both these things seem to have been absent from this PS4 footage and it really made the whole thing seem soulless to me. Maybe I need to re-watch it and see if I missed anything.

This is what I have been saying...this does not look KZ at all...Look at the e3 2005 video and the later KZ2 and KZ3 videos. They have over the top animations and the whole atmosphere is dark gritty and just amazing gun play. Even though the e3 2005 demo looks dated now but it still gives me goose bumps when I watch it...the demo today didn't do anything for me apart from the amazing graphics tech but even the art style has drastically changed for the worse

What did you use to get the reso? everyone ive talked to have said so far that the stream is far to compressed to get any indication of resolution.
My eyes? I mean, I can't be 100% sure about the res, and sure, maybe they're shooting for 1080p in the final product, but the fact that even on a stream like this the relatively blocky alpha jaggies stood out like a sore thumb seemed like a tell. That combined with the super smooth look of lower/normal contrast edges seems to point at some kind of post-processing AA.

Fuck.

Seems like the only chance I have is BF4 for that 60fps feel with fantastic visuals.

NextGen CoD will probably look shit compared to those 2.

More than likely since they'll have to cater to the PS3 and 360 as well. Cross-gen development for ya.

Well it says they "chose" to do 30 fps. My guess is for Killzone, they wanted to keep it at that framerate to at least attempt keeping the heavier feeling to movement and such.

You're eyes are not good enough here. Show up with some proof or wait for the pixel counters to do it in a better looking stream.

Haha, no. No sane developer would choose 30 over 60 if they could do 60 fps. Let's face it, this game is beautiful and with all these effects and visual they had to make a sacrifice aka 30 fps.

the buildings in the distance are tiny compared to a jpeg that is blown up. zoomed out, you can't really even tell, they're bitmapped boxes. Looks fine in the video.

Two different parts of the game.

Here is a somewhere close screenshot of the gif part.

Killzone: Shadow fall's graphics are by no means bad, but it's easy to get fooled by a downsampled gif how a game actually looks like at the correct resolution and aspect fit to a screen or a TV.

can be possible. Ill try to translate as good as possible

Will 60FPS at a Full-HD resolution be the new standard on PS4? No, not necessarily, because the developers are free to chose how they want to use the available resources. In the case of Killzone Shadow Fall, the Dutch developer agreed on 30FPS at a 1080p resolution

It sounds like 60 FPS games will be possible, however it is not clear if they are able to achieve this at 1080p now. Might always happen in the future when developers have more experience with the console

The game, while gorgeous, still looks like a typical mediocre AAA shooter. Nothing special. So in that regard it seems to keep in line with the Killzone series.

They chose 30fps to keep that 'movie' feel they wanted. They said this when they were asked what the FPS was going to be for KZ3 years ago, let it go.

After last gen, i'm very impressed that we'll be playing this in 1080p.

I'm fine with 30fps. Framerate was solid in the PS3 games.

Hun, I don't need proof to state my opinion. My eyes have never deceived me in the past about this sort of thing, but I don't claim to be infallible. I said that it "looks like 720p with post-processing AA", because that's what it looked like to me. We'll see if anyone can come up with something conclusive. I'm definitely curious.

Given actual time to work with final hardware, i'm sure GG of all teams could hit 60 fps at the fidelity we see in Killzone Shadow Fall if they wanted. Hell SSM went with the decision for 40s-50s range with GoW 3 on PS3 and that was a stunning game. I'd actually like to know, how much of Killzone Shadow Fall is based on a new engine, and how much code was brought over from Killzone 2 and 3.

Ah okay cool.

I think we will see 2xMSAA alot more this gen, it no longer destroys your fill as both Durango/Orbis(PS4, whatever) support upto 4xMSAA at full speed meaning the only cost is bandwidth and space which they have plenty of.

honestly, having just watched the gameplay trailer this looked shit

i'm not the biggest fan of killzone 2/3 but the graphics were really something when first shown. this looked a bit nicer with more colours. that's it.

Gameplaay looked just as boring and generic as the other killzone games. animations looked worse somehow. fucking terrible

and people are jizzing themselves over an on-rails helicopter ride at the start. welcome to next gen

I thought this looked pretty stunning until I caught the shoddy animation of this guy running:

Now I can't forget about it when I think of PS4 graphical power :(

Since the developer has said it's 1080p, I'd call that pretty conclusive you're wrong on the resolution. The AA in use isn't known one way or the other, so you could be right.

That's the last thing I'd take as conclusive proof for *anything*. It's certainly noteworthy that they only specify that the game "will be" 1080p or that they "decided to" go with 1080p, but not that this demo was 1080p. But, you know, we'll see.

Incredibly Naive
It was roughly 12am in the UK when they showed this last night. I was tried and hungry and was starting to get bored...

My jaw literally hung for about 5 mins when this presentation started.
It really did remind me of the first time that they showed off KZ2 and I was completely amazed at what I was seeing....

For me the effect wore off very quickly though and now I'm worried that I'm getting old and flashy graphics alone just don't cut it for me anymore.

The gameplay just looked boring to play. I don't know what I was really expecting but it looked like I was watching a very poorly scripted and shot movie... The whole thing was very strange and I quickly lost interest.

One of the things that stood out to me was how static the whole environment looked.

No I agree with you, I was actually underwhelmed when the game started, because it just felt a little boring. The guy sucked at the game, and it was a standard FPS moment. The AI was incredibly stupid and he was just running around shooting at nothing. I'm sure at different sections though the game is amazing. Also the first minute or 2 of the trailer still gets me giddy when you see the whole city like that, I'm sure it'll be like that during sections of the game. That being said I don't know why sony is so heavily invested in GG, because while their games are nice, they just never quite hit the right note with KZ. It's a solid game, don't get me wrong, but it's just not top tier.

So this is next-gen (yes, yes it's launch, it's early)

Looks like a decent jump in detail - I suppose true HD gaming is finally here but everything else is just whatever. The gameplay is nothing new - looks like the tightly defined playzone of the corridor shooter is here to stay.

I have to bring everyone's attention to the animations - they are absolutely awful!

Destiny, Deep Down and this game all showed some terrible character animations. Even Watch_dogs (still the best looking of the next-gen, I think) has stiff, un-natural movements.

I hope what we are seeing is a result of launch software running on scaled-up prev gen game engines. All this extra power should be making for some significant refinements in all aspects of gaming not just graphical detail.

I thought watchdogs had the worst animations actually, but as for Deep Down I completely disagree. For Destiny I think they were building that more focused on older consoles... at least I hope so, that was incredibly underwhelming. As for KZ I believe the animations will improve significantly, but for now I agree that's where it really lost me.

About the game not really looking like Killzone... let's not forget that it's not called Killzone 4. I think they just wanted to go into a different direction/ maybe even attract new audiences and I wouldn't be surprised if we were to see a real Killzone 4 in a few years.

I wish it had less colors. I wish the game was just a black screen, except for the glowing helghast eyes.

I need to watch Deep Down again, i guess. I don't totally disagree about watch_dogs; I find the transition from walking to running in today's footage (you know that thing that happens about 12 million times!) to be especially jarring. It is very stiff. The thing I would like to see is variation in animations. When I break into a run, I don't do it the same everytime. It depends on a number of factors and I don't think such natural variation is beyond current technology.

I can say right now its 1080P, 30FPS, because I can see it and because the developers have said so.

Some of you guys are acting like the game is coming out next week .
It still has at least 6 months to go plus it's launch game so unlike KZ2 GG not going to be using final hardware for 2 plus years while making it .
I expect to be one of the most impressive next gen launch games when all said and done .

LOL, apparently the GG guys were shitting their pants backstage when the dude playing missed three shots while hanging on the rope, if he missed one more time the demo would've crashed because they didn't have a death scripted in yet.

Some of the responses are comical. The graphics looked great, better colors, oh, but it's a FPS Killzone game.

Really?! What lead you to believe it would be something else?
