Damn, I'll definitely miss it. Kind of a bummer to get this news right on the eve of the S3 premiere, but as Simon said, at least they can end it on their terms.

how does this compare to shows like breaking bad or the wire?

I'll let somebody else go into this further, as I've only seen the first couple of episodes when season one first aired (don't have HBO myself)... but what I saw, it's all about characters. It seemed to be a total character drama from the getgo and I've read nothing about the show that's made me think otherwise. However, it's a character drama coming from the creator of the Wire... and I really enjoyed the little I saw. Plan on buying digital copies of seasons one and two once I'm done with what I'm currently watching.

To use the analogy of literature:

Breaking Bad is a comic book series -- one of the best and most entertaining ones ever.
The Wire is a novel, a slow burn that takes great care in its subject matter, but ultimately delivering a compelling narrative.
Treme most closely resembles historical non-fiction (yes, even though the characters and their stories are fictional). It serves mainly to illustrate and describe situations in intimate detail, with narrative simmering on the back burner.

If you're coming off the stylized action of Breaking Bad it would be tough to sit through a series that's almost a documentary. You'd really have to be in the mood for it.

All three shows are very different, although certainly both of Simon's have many traits in common.

Season premiere tonight:
Knock With Me, Rock With Me

Antoine Batiste toys with martyrdom; Janette encounters an old nemesis and a new suitor; Delmond and Albert debut their album; Toni meets a new ally; LaDonna struggles with living with her in-laws.

Yesssssss, one of my favourite shows of all time is back! And with heavy metal! Do we know which Metal bands/musicians are in it? I think I heard Eyehategod were involved.

- EW.com: David Simon talks 'Treme,' America, and a possible end to his TV career
Treme is not really like any other show on television. Set in the city of New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, the series follows a huge cast of characters through myriad subplots set in the city’s overlapping cultural spheres, with regular tangents into the worlds of jazz musicians, local politicians, celebrity chefs, and even the occasional fishermen. The show was co-created by David Simon, the famously provocative TV auteur who created The Wire. Treme shares The Wire‘s symphony-of-a-city panoramic perspective. With the show returning for its third season on Sunday night, Simon got on the phone with EW to talk about the long-term plan for Treme, how post-Katrina New Orleans is an allegory for post-Recession America, and the possibility that he might move on from television.

David Simon leaving TV would be a massive blow to the medium.

The Wire, Generation Kill and Treme are just too good for words :( I need to go back to his pre-Wire work as well!

i've been begging for over 5 years.
A David Simon movie would have to be a half day event.

I've only watched The Wire and now trying out Treme. David seems to really invest in compelling stories and details for his characters. I love character dramas I think TV is a better medium for Simon.

He needs the time TV offers to flesh out his ideas and characters.

So glad to have this show back. Liked every moment of this opener.

And bittersweet news about season Four. I was sure HBO was gonna cancel after this season. So, props to them.

Just started watching, and man, the cops are like the worst people ever. lol

I'm glad that they're getting a fourth season, although I wonder what it means if HBO is just giving them a set budget and asking them to make whatever they want with it.

Fuck. Fuck. FUUUCK!

I understand where he's coming from, but I hope he stays with TV for our sake.

Honestly, I'm not surprised. The type of television he wants to do, no one wants to watch. :(

Love this show. It's slowly paced but 100% character-focused. Maybe not as gripping as The Wire but a great show in its own right.

I had a big smile on my face during the entire premiere. Great to have Treme back on.

Truly. But, I've forgotten a lot. I had a lot of "oh yeah, the daughter is working at the coffee shop now", btu some things I completely forgot, like why is Khandi Alexander and her husband living with some other people? Did she decide to testify or what's going on with her case? Who was the guy in jail that the Dallas builder went to visit?

Is there a good, extensive recap available?

Edit: I just went on Wikipedia to read the episode synopses to familiarize myself, and I saw the ratings per episode.... depressing. :(

Ahh, the DVR didn't continue recording as a series for some reason, so I forgot all about it.

Looking forward to checking the episode out tomorrow.

The guy in the jail was the guy sofia worked for. I think he was a city councilman or something and was caught money laundering. Its been awhile since I watched those episodes.

Here's the short S3 recap.

Some quick answers on your questions off the top of my head:

- Khandi is back in New Orleans as last season they decided it was important for them to be there, and I assume that's her husband's brother that they're living with(?)
- No idea what's going on with her case.
- The guy in jail is councilman Thomas. He was Hidalgo's hookup in New Orleans, so Hidalgo's being shut out of future work due to the fact that he can be connected to Thomas. More on Oliver Thomas here.

Amazing that they kept the Thomas storyline going, guy has some real cajones.

Sometimes while watching Treme, while the show is just lingering, soaking up atmosphere, doing what it does, I wish the episodes were 24 hours long so I could just live in them. Damn did I miss it.

Yeah I was struggling to remember elements of Season 2 but thankfully the premiere eased me back into the Treme world.

Looking forward to the remainder of the season.

Indeed she was. Niiiice.

It's sad that this thread is only two pages. Love this show. Feels like a one hour holiday just being absorbed in their world.

Great premiere, so glad it's back. Correct me if I'm wrong but did Antoine do much cab hustling in S2? He did in the first season but not at all in the second if I remember.

Also what do you guys think of Hidalgo? He's into some shady dealings and is a for profit guy, was really hoping to see what he wanted to do with that other contractor lady.

Oliver Thomas. Last week my sister, my girl and I went to hear the Brass-A-Holics play like every Wednesday and Mr. North was in the building. My girl and I told him we were big Treme fans and we wound up talking to him for a good while. He's working to get a play off the ground. Super cool dude. We also got to holla at Kermit Ruffins. He's on the 1s and 2s there from 6-9. I love living in this city

New episode tonight:
Saints

Antoine's students show interest; L.P. Everett gets a new case; LaDonna is forced to move; Hidalgo finds a new angle; Janette's resistance slips; Albert receives news about his health.

I sure hope so! Anyway, another great episode. It makes me sad season 4 will only be half a season...

'Treme' referenced in two Ryan Murphy shows -- 'The New Normal' and 'Glee' -- in the same week
NOLA.com said:
Two series overseen by producer Ryan Murphy – the NBC sitcom “The New Normal” and the Fox musical comedy “Glee” – referenced HBO’s “Treme” in the same week.

In the first, which aired Tuesday (Sept. 25), two characters were challenged with rounding up enough African-American friends to populate a diverse party.

“I will not be called a bigoted, arm-chair liberal by anyone,” said one character. “Maybe we can get the cast of ‘Treme’ to come. I sat next to them at the Golden Globes last year. Since nobody watches that show anyway, they can easily pass as your run-of-the-mill non-famouses.”

During Thursday’s (Sept. 27) “Glee,” two characters are depicted “hate-watching” “Treme,” one of them by remote via Skype or whatever.

“The only time we’re really in sync is when we’re hate-watching Treme together,” said one.

“These songs go on forever,” said the other. “Why isn’t there more zydeco?”

The origins of these references may come from a 2010 appearance by “Treme” co-creator David Simon on “The Colbert Report,” in which...
