WWDC12 Thread of iOS 6, Mac OS X Mountain Lion and iCloud

Swipe right to left. Or pull it down slightly and flick it back up.
?
I don't know how I didn't find out about this before. You can dismiss banner notifications by swiping right to left on them. You can also pull a banner down slightly a few millimeters and then flick it up to dismiss it.

*ahem*

How to quickly and easily get rid of iOS 5 banner notifications — the little roll-downs you get in-app and on the home screen — seems to be a hot topic for our tipsters this week, and luckily you can do it in a couple of different ways.

  1. Touch and pull down slightly on the banner, then flick it up and away. (You're really activating Notification Center for a moment, but it has such a terrific, tactile feeling to it.)
  2. "Swipe" from right to left. (You're really not swiping, it's a subtle down up motion that's a faster but not as reliable version of the above.)

In both cases you need to be really careful you touch and keep your finger down, otherwise it will be interpreted as a tap and you'll be whooshed away to another app, likely the exact the opposite of what you wanted.

Either way, it does nothing to fix the central problems of banners — they roll down over content instead of pushing the content down, and they come in surprisingly enough that you can be about to tap a top-bar control only to hit a new notification instead.

Hopefully some sort of visual cue will be added, and the page content slid down, in a future update.

Since we're talking about notifications, how do you open iMessage from the lock screen when a pic is sent to you? Swiping doesn't work on pictures.

Links are popping up for iOS 6 beta and Safari 6 Dev Preview:

http://www.macrumors.com/2012/06/10...5316k-and-safari-6-developer-preview-at-wwdc/

Not live yet.

A post [Google translation] from the staff of Chinese forum WeiPhone.com claims to share a host of official Apple download links for tomorrow's software releases. While the links are not currently active, they include iOS 6 beta build 10A5316k for a variety of devices, as well as a developer preview of Safari 6 for OS X Lion.

The accuracy of the claim can not be confirmed given that the links are not yet pointing to the files, but clicking on the links does take users to an error page stating "Your session has expired." Altering the URLs to reference a different build number or making other changes yields an "Access denied" error message, suggesting that there is indeed something unique about the leaked URLs.

If these links are accurate, no support in iOS 6 for original iPad, but support for 3GS.

I know it won't be announced at WWDC, but I hope they actually update the iPod Touch this year so I can get a new one without feeling cheated.

MacRumors freaking out how the iPad 1 isn't getting iOS 6 but the 3GS is.

It's called 256MB of RAM with a 1024x768 screen.

Also, I wouldn't count on the 3GS getting all of the iOS 6 features. Heck, I think I wouldn't count on the iPhone 4S potentially getting some features if the OS is overhauled at all for the 16:9 screen.

How long has 'The worlds most advanced mobile operating system' been a tagline for iOS, is it new with 6? Because that seems like a highly questionable statement.

My iPad 2 is really snappy and fast. I hope ios6 doesn't end that feel. My 3GS is sluggish and slow these days, making me very interested in a new iPhone, which probably fits apples good ole business plan perfectly

Why would iPad 1 owners want iOS 6? iPad 1 barely functions on iOS 5 as is.
And people laughed it off when they were told 256mb ram was going to be a problem. One of the worst cases of planned obsolescence I've seen recently.

Anyway, can't wait to see the new MacBook pro.

If you are with a major carrier on contract, not updating your phone is just leaving money on the table.

For about 5 years now. While it is questionable, it really depends on what aspects of the OS you consider important, and how you define advanced. I'd say Apple isn't too far off calling it such - especially if you consider APIs, multithreading-multicore, and graphics processing as part of the OS. If we are looking solely at user facing features such as the ability to manage files, or the ability to make rules to automatically sort incoming mail, Apple probably shouldn't make such a claim, but holistically, I'd say they are in the right to make it.

Plus as giga and treefingers points out, it's marketing - what company doesn't exaggerate a bit to sell their product?

I really don't like this talk about the iMac not being updated tomorrow. Hopefully they (9to5mac) are wrong.

Good news if Apple is finally doing the built in map app I really liked Google maps at first, but obviously they didn't care about it anymore some 3rd party map apps became more useful.

Blow my mind with the new Macbook Pro line please. I'm almost out of warranty and I want to pick up a 15 inch this time.

Doesn't the iPod have a shitty 320x480 screen?
Retina.

The iPhone 4 is nearly identical to the iPad 1, but it still feels generally fast while the iPad is almost unusable anymore. Who knows what's going on, but the iPad 1 is garbage.

Well, the iPhone 4 has 512mb of ram, while the iPad 1 has 256mb like the 4th Gen Touch. Doesn't matter to me, as I don't have an iPad of any type, but am getting the 5th Gen Touch to replace my broken screened 4th Gen.

iPad 2 is faster than the new iPad. I expect iOS 6 will maintain that.

It's pretty nasty on iPad 1 as it is, but I wouldn't say almost unusable. Almost unusable is iPhone 3G on ios 4.

Wait... That isn't 'almost' unusable.... But I guess since I AM still using it, I can't technically classify it as unusable.... :p

But yeah, I do not wish ios6 on iPad 1 given the state of ios5 on it.

Apps are generally oil but this device is NOT built for multitasking. People forget, but the iPad 1 was released with ios3. 2 major upgrades is about right. I wouldn't expect the iPhone 4 to get next years iOS 7 for example.

Of course, the 3GS getting ios6 is a discrepancy. I gather a lot of the improvements to ios6 are probably focussing on the iPad, and any major stuff on the iPhone will be related to the next iPhone.

AI is saying the first gen iPad is getting the beta based on the URLs. Weird.

The full list of devices claimed to be supported by the iOS 6 beta are the first-generation iPad, iPad 2, and third-generation iPad; the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, and iPhone 4S; the fourth-generation iPod touch; and the second- and third-generation Apple TV.

The OG iPad got 256 MB RAM. Worst technical decision Apple made in a long time. Still haven't upgraded to iOS 5 and I doubt I ever will.

What are the chances of a new iPod Nano, either at this event or ever? Seems like the iPod line hasn't received any updates in quite some time.
