This Is Halo Now

I know enough dude, I played the original for hundreds of hours, I don't need to prove anything to you, lol.

You're right, I didn't, because a thumbnail like that tells me all I need to know, lol. I did better, I've watched 30-40 minutes of raw gameplay rather than having some talking head tell me how I should feel about it. Hell, even popping into the OT doesn't show it overflowing with whining and complaining.

and he does say he liked Halo Campaign evolved, but he's worried about the future ones because he thinks it was "easy" to remake this. I mean wtf. Let's make a video to worry about a game that is not even announced yet? I don't have time for this shit.

So I just found out about this character and I'm so glad I didn't get this game and now I never will. It's a remake, it shouldn't add characters, especially ones the fanbase will hate. I will I could the face of the person who came up with the idea of adding this hideous, obnoxious girlboss.

It's a remake not a remaster. They're also prequel missions that were added. That in mind, I don't mind adding new characters, but not ones that virtue signal. I've yet to play those missions.

Picked it up on Steam. Playing through it on Legendary and I'm at the "Silent Cartographer" part. It's a stellar game. Very well done remake and cannot wait for more. Highly recommended for the FPS fans out there. Oh, and there's co-op! Yeah I read the room and if you haven't gotten by the first few levels and noticed all the details you can surely and properly git gud! Don't let the Hunter's get you down. If you shoot them long enough, they'll die.

Master Chief Legend GIF by Xbox
This game is a cake walk on legendary, sprint basically a cheat code.

Skill Up is a clown with consistently terrible takes. This is the same guy who thinks God of War Ragnarök is a 10/10 masterpiece. I'd rate that game only slightly higher than BIG Rigs.

The prequel missions are weak. The cutscenes are weak. The dialogue is weak. There are still bugs that need polishing, and I've been very vocal about all of that. I'm not excusing those issues.

What I don't agree with is YouTube outrage merchants acting like this is some catastrophic failure that everyone should avoid.

Stick to the main campaign, enable the Remix Skulls, crank the volume up, and you'll experience some of the best Halo gameplay we've had in years.

I'm genuinely devastated that we probably won't get Halo 2 and Halo 3 remakes because of the constant clickbait and manufactured outrage surrounding this release.

The art direction is every bit as good as the original, and in many areas it's even better. The music and sound effects are perfectly fine on my Q800F soundbar, despite all the claims to the contrary. The weapon balancing is also being blown way out of proportion.

The driving physics are completely fixed once you switch back to the original control scheme.

The AI is fantastic. The visuals are fantastic. The gunplay is fantastic. At its core, it plays exceptionally well, and that's what matters most.
Yea Right GIF

Actually after extensive testing the visuals have been downgraded. Especially the interiors. Why would Halo Studios fuck this up? It looked amazing prior to the update.

I still do not understand the allure of this franchise. I didn't own a Xbox or 360 as I wasn't into pc only after ps1. Playing pc fps made console look lame at the time. I tried halo 2 on vista and I didn't like it. I tried the mcc when it was super cheap and I downloaded reach and was bored. I don't know it seems very generic. Maybe it's a nostalgia thing for people and I wasn't there so wouldn't know.
My head cannon theory is that Halo was the first major FPS game for many people who never had a PC or N64. Now think about it. These people never had a decent original FPS game on their systems other than Powerslave on the Saturn and that's a very niche crowd.

So Halo was was a good enough FPS game for their non-existent standards, with excellent controls that actually standardized (NOT invented) dual analog controls for console FPS games. So excluding everything else, it felt good to play at the least.

I remember not liking the game itself at all (coming from N64 and PCs) but it did feel really good to play. To the point where i was half enjoying it just for that. And that comes from someone who played every N64 FPS game with the dpad for movement and analog stick for direction, which is basically the same scheme as WASD + Mouse for right handed. Which i thought it was the perfect way to play.

I have to disagree on this theory. Consoles back then had good FPS games such as Medal of Honor, Golden Eye, Perfect Dark, Doom and even Half Life 1 on the PS2. Coming from someone who just played Half Life on PC and then played Halo at launch, I remembered being blown away by the gameplay. Halo was revolutionary at the time because it implemented so many features that made the FPS genre more fluid and replayable. Being able to shoot with the right trigger, throw grenades with the left trigger, and melee with the B button was something that was uncommon or non existent in FPS games at the time. Most games such as Half Life made you switch in your inventory to initiate the actions I have listed above so if you wanted to melee, you had to switch to your crowbar same with grenades. Halo also had third person vehicle combat along with there own physics engine. Driving around the open sandbox with your warthog and popping up in the air from a hill was something you've never seen before in a FPS game. Finally there was the advance AI system that gave enemies better path tracing and reactions such as killing an enemy elite and seeing the grunts run away added more replayability.

In 2001, the big PC FPS were Serious Sam, AVP2, RtCW and Red Faction. These were all titles where the base enemies functioned as cannon fodder that you would mow through while your health depleted. While Halo introduced the idea of enemies (Elites) that could function as your equal, and could push you to the limit in each encounter, due to the recharging health system. When you add in the 30 seconds of fun, built around guns, grenades and melee, you get a combat experience that had no equal in the PC space at the time. I came to to Halo as a PC gamer, expecting something fun but derivative, and ended up as a series fan.

You could use the d-pad for movement?

You could use the d-pad for movement?
Yes, you can play pretty much every N64 FPS game like this:

dqosfAiOTlLv9k9S.jpg

Dpad = Movement/Strafe.
Stick = Direction/Aim.
Z-Trigger (right index) = Fire.
L-Button (left index) = Sights.

Pretty much like any modern game.

In Goldeneye/PD use 1.2 solitare and you are set.

In Turok it's already the default. Other games might need some tweeking but it's possible.

I used the controller the other way, left hand on the thumb stick / Z, right hand on C-buttons / A / B / R. It blows my mind that people played like this.

I would say halo was peak fps action back in 2006, and represented gaming, Xbox, Master Chief, and I don't want to slam Reach, 4, 5 and Infinite those are juicy games but just didn't go well with Halo loyalists. It is crazy Halo's identity today is reminiscing the past. I applaud people who stuck with the franchise all these years. The franchise could have died like Socom or Killzone.

Well, that was the default position but FPS games were more at home for me with the left hold because it was closer to the left hand keyboard and right hand mouse setup.

This way i could play both PC and N64 FPS games without having to swap hands for movement and aiming every time i was changing platforms.

Modern dual analog controls are also the same (only difference is that the movement is also analog) so the transition to modern console FPS felt like nothing changed for me.

But the Halo soul and ART is completely and utterly destroyed 😭 /s
That shot has so many cheap graphical overlays. The chromic aberration alone makes me feel like there's something wrong with my eyes (well, more than there already is). And I've seen footage - thanks to the UnReAl EnGiNe, it never even looks like this in motion. It looks like blurry split-pea soupage.

Accurate.

My friend's family couldn't afford a PC at the time but they could afford an Xbox. A couple months later, one of his brothers also bought one. They moved both systems to their rec room and had 8-player networked Xbox Halo matches, frequently! Halo, pizza party, soda and chips. Once a week, every week. Everyone chipped in $5 for food and drink. I think back then you could get 3 pies and soda for ~$40.

It helped that his family had an in ground pool back then. Not rich but smart with their money and good priorities lol. So Halo, pizza, swimming, oh man, good times!

Halo was never impressive to me, I was also a PC guy, but that multiplayer and those get togethers were genuinely a lot of fun!

Yes like having waypoints in one way corridors, hud elements over every little pickup, arrows pointing out stealth enemies, hitmarkers, a hud showing RT at all times because god forbid you forget how to shoot, Cortana spoiling stuff and calling out shit that has no need.

"Its Halo"

No its not lmao
You do know you can turn all those objective markers and HUD elements off, right?

First thing I did.

Nearly completed it now, and guess what? It most definitely IS Halo. A worthwhile addition in my books, bringing a great modern look to an old classic.

I'm near the end of Two Betrayals, and some of the fights have been truly jaw dropping. So many light sources flying around in the wintry dark - amazing stuff.

Any differences between this and the original (save for the reworked areas) are so trivial you would never notice.

And as for the cut scenes? Nowhere near as bad as made out - they look good, they serve their purpose.

Try Campaign Remix

With these skulls enabled

- Thunderstorm
- Angry

Its by far one of the best Halo experiences ive had.

Some may hate this guy and his harsh take on the later Halo games, but after watching this video, and being someone that never really played through the Halo series, it's actually selling me on playing the bungie games.
I have MCC and I've hardly touched it. By showing the contrast with modern Halo, he really sells the others imo.

Yeah that makes a ton of sense. I didn't understand the allure of Goldeneye either, outside of being a big James Bond fan it was just a fun shooter I played at a friends house. I can see it being a big step up from the controls and feel of that. I know playing unreal tournament, quake 1 - 3, half life, tribes, Duke, and a slew up great so fps it was lacking.

I got a series x in 2023 and went back to play old games I missed out on or replayed ps3 games I no longer could play. Stuff like Black and R6Vegas and Graw. Even battlefront 2

Yeah I had an opposite reaction, yet I didn't play much of halo 1, I did play halo 2 but on PC and it left a bad taste in my mouth. Maybe on console it would of been different. On win Vista some of the textures didn't seem right, and lighting looked washed out. I didn't care for only being able to hold 2 weapons. I missed a weapon wheeloand hated regen health at the time. I only played single player.

I came from pc and had just finished half life 2, fear, farcry, serious Sam, rtcw, quake 3, unreal tournament 99-03/04, Battlefield Vietnam, etc... Halo 2 was nowhere near the level of immersion and awesomeness of those games.

I didn't dig the 2 weapon thing until I got a ps3, when killzone 2 came out. It had done so much different than pc shooters that it was fine and went with the weighty grounded feel. Resistance 1 had a weapon wheel and I loved being able to switch to any if the guns and strategize based on the enemy. I didn't like when they copied halo for the second game.

People are decidedly not happy huh. :lollipop-medical:

Harsh words. Not surprising to see that they stripped the lore of its underlying religious themes, among other things.

Asmondgold…I would trust a monkey more then that filthy dirty SOB!
It's a reaction to a different video. Harsh and inflammatory, but I think a lot of people are hitting the breaking point with the Halo 1 remake because we can see a 1:1 comparison to something universally better. Halo wasn't made by theater kids.

I enjoy it and I'm a massive halo fanboy…the new mission suck big time that's true but the game is great in general and it's a graphical power house on PC.

I don't blame you for not liking Halo 2 after playing a list like that, especially a good amount of those titles you listed came from 2004 - 2005 which was an amazing time for FPS games on PC. I remembered being addicted to Unreal Tournament 2004's onslaught mode since it was Battlefield in Unreal Tournament crushing players with the manta and using the goliath tank was always fun.

I can't really say if your experience for Halo 2 would have been different on console, it should be more like when you would have played Halo 2 that would have the most impact. Think of how today multiplayer games now have matchmaking along with a party system for you and your friends to play together. In 2004, if you wanted to keep in touch with your friends on PC you would had to use third party softwares such as Gamespy Arcade, Xfire, Ventrilo, Teamspeak, etc. Halo 2 on the other hand introduced the virtual couch system and all you had to do was press the Y button to see your friends and interact with them.

Halo 2 at that point was starting to become a cultural phenomenon, it wasn't secluded to just being a great game. The title went beyond the scope of a game and was changing how we perceived videogames all together. I recommend those who haven't seen the Halo 2 E3 2004 presentation to check it out. You might find it on YouTube. It's a great time capsule that showed how gaming was back then when you had people like Joseph Staten and Max Hoberman get on stage to show off the multiplayer of Halo 2 and then Peter Moore at the end raises up his sleeve to show the release date for the game. It was an iconic moment in gaming history.

What a fucking man baby 🤣 just move along

I've never played through this entire game and this is the time I planned on doing it. But man!!! I played about 2 hours and I feel like I'm ready to move on.

Same but Im not moving on cause playing coop is fine. Thing is IMO game already aged like milk in 2004/2005. Playing Halo 1 campaign in those years, after wrapping up FarCry, Half Life 2 and Doom 3 made me abandon it in the first 30 minutes.

Did you even bother to look at the video? He's just reacting to a video made by andypants. Though maybe you shouldn't watch it, andypants doesn't pull his punches or mince words so he can be offensive to "sensitive" people.
