Spider-Man 2 Director Explains Why MJ Stealth Scenes Were Included in the Sequel

It's called trying to add variety, especially when you have dual protags that are both Spider-Man. Did you somehow think Wind Waker's stealth sections were woke too? 🤦‍♂️
They weren't woke, but they fuckin' sucked, just like the Ocarina stealth section. Haven't played Spiderman2 yet, but the least fun part of the entire first game was controlling MJ. Not one time during Miles Morales did I think about how much I want to play as another character but with stale gameplay. Keeping it focused on Miles was great and added to the game. Variety isn't inherently good.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
They gave her a stun gun that takes out enemies with one shot that Spider-man has to pummel for two minutes. So better than SM1 I guess, but also absurd and still completely needless.

Yeahh .... it gets kinda absurd near the ending parts where she can take out symbiote enemies with a single stun or a couple of shots in open combat, and Peter and Miles have to spent minutes fighting them lol

She's better at combat than either the Spider Mens.

I'm glad they improved them, they add variety to the gameplay. They are quite improved from the first game.

There is something fascinating. We all know the "gamer stereotype" right?.

So, we have this move from the videogame, movie and TV industry of pushing the inclusion and diversity....I wonder then how hard is for some people not to play certain games because of those things. Reminds me of the "call of duty boycott".

It was fine imo. Keeps the gameplay varied. I think it's cool when they have these sections where you play as someone other than Spiderman.

It's also not like they gave her super strength. she dies in one hit and is only op because of a weapon she stole.

edit: apparently she only dies in one hit on hard mode.

Making the worst parts of the first game better doesn't really change the fact that they're still the worst parts of the game. They're just ... less tedious. I didn't like the MJ missions in the first game and I don't like them here either. I bought the game to play as Spider-Man. I don't mind being ripped out of superhero mode and having to do things as either Peter or Miles (the duality of the character and all that) but I don't give a shit about playing as Peter's girlfriend because Insomniac felt like they needed to add more stealth missions.

MJ parts were fine. Definitely better than the first game. Still my second least favorite parts of the game after the side quests.

I should also note that using the word "woke" is the equivalent to having a punchable face. Also the guy who said Resetera's favorite part of 1 was the MJ part has never been to Resetera lol.

To be honest with you, with all the absolutely batshit insane action sequences and moments this game has to offer, I can't bring myself to care enough to moan about this.

"OMG, this 25 hour game has like 20 mins total of budget TLOU sections grrrrr", ultimately it's like, who cares? Having experienced the stuff this game has to offer, the game has more than enough fucking crazy superhero action going on across it's runtime (Like every other mission has some Naughty Dog level set-piece). So crazy in fact, that no reasonable person would come away from this game thinking these short variety sections do much harm to the game overall, and that's assuming you don't enjoy them, which from what I gather isn't a universal opinion compared to the 2018 sections.

I managed to play the majority of the game before reading player reactions. Quite surprised some people were pretty bothered by the MJ missions and Hailey's ONE mission. I thought they were nice sections in the game that break up the web swinging action.

While I thought MJ became pretty OP in this, never once thought it was "woke". They made it entertaining for sure, wasn't that why people were complaining about it in the original game?

So how did that work out, are the MJ sections in the new game better?

I love Insomniac but there's been some goofy shit with this game.
Having done what looks like the last sequence (not done with the game itself yet, but super close, I'm at what I think is the final boss fight), it is far, far better in this game.

There's far too much culture war circlejerking going on about this game tbh. There's some weird stuff here and there yeah, but I don't think it ruins the main plotline much.

MJ missions were trash but a bit of forced relief as others said , made the enemies a lot easier to get through than with the spider men.

MJ missions were way better than the first game. They actually had good level design with decent gameplay. People just hating because she isn't the stereotypical feminine damsel in distress or how men want women to behave. Her character in the game wasn't annoying at all, especially comparing to other side characters. Kind of a nice wrinkle to the traditional portray of the character

And, it's quite funny how apoplectic gamers were over her model. It's as if some were so disturbed that they won't be able to be to jackoff to her animated character.
That's not it. Most don't like it because they are playing a Spider-Man game and want to play as Spider-Man. The MJ parts are not bad. It kind of plays like AC, but this is not what people came for. It's not as self-indulgent as a fucking musical episode, but it is a bit self indulgent.

I mean MJ is an integral part of Spider-Man, at least that's what comic fans have been screaming since One More Day.

Its not really any different than the Catwoman sections in Arkham City thematically.

You’re gonna look me in the face, and seriously tell me, peoples issue with the MJ sections in these games, is honest to god, spawned from how “men want women to behave”…?

For real? That’s your epiphany? Your ultimate explanation?

there's like 20 minutes of MJ gameplay in this game. it's overblown

MJ has no training whatsoever and no super powers. She is a supporting character and Peter love interest. Catwoman has physical training, acrobatic abilities and gadgets because thats what she uses to steal whatever she wants. Blackcat would be the female counterpart of spider-man.

I'm honestly astonished the guy has the mental ability to spout such ridiculous excuse as saying people dislike the part because "damsel in distress" or because shes a woman and because people want to "jackoff".

According to Intihar, Insomniac was well-aware that MJ's missions hadn't been anyone's favorite bit of the first Spider-Man. And they did ponder foregoing them entirely in the sequel. But instead, the team went a different direction:
They made a shit decision and they once again made the game worse. Congrats.

Edit: What I don’t get why not do Spider-Gwen, Spider-Woman, Blackcat, etc… if they want inclusion points. At least gameplay would have been interesting.

This problem is solved when you play on the hardest difficulty like I did. One hit and shes dead. way more realistic
yes if anything, what's really cringe in that video is playing on easy and then complaining that MJ can take more than one hit 😬

This MJ was trained in hand to hand combat by Sable when she and Peter were in Symkaria during the events of Miles Morales.

This pretty much, it’s better than the first game’s stealth missions cause she has a stun gun now but still feels unnecessary anyway. The overall game on the other hand is fantastic so far, a few tiny sections like hers aren’t gonna ruin the game for me.
