Ok GAF: I'm perfectly happy with my PS4, convince me to buy a PS5

I won't hide that the latest sale reports really surprised me, as i see the ps5 as a console with a very slim offering, if you have a PS4 and don't want to spend 500 dollars to play the same stuff at 60fps.

So, am i missing something?
What are you all playing on PS5?
Are there exclusives I missed?

Sell me this console, Gaf.

I guess it depends. At a theme park is your favourite activity standing in the queue waiting for the ride, or the ride itself?

If it’s the former, then sure stick with the ps4. If it’s the latter, the unsung hero of the ps5 is the almost non existent load screens. You don’t realise just how important it is until you go back.

Then it’s the dualsense, which is by far the best controller I’ve ever used. The haptics and sounds etc when utilised well, really do add to the experience, it’s for me the deciding factor on multi platform games between playing a game for free on gamespass on the seriesX (for which I have the elite controller) vs buying it on the ps5. If the game has good implementation of the dualsense, then I’ll buy it on ps5.

The graphics ofcourse are better than ps4 but relatively negligible, primarily as so few games are actually ps5 exclusive yet and we’ve been in cross gen mode for the most part, so not much is built from ground up for the new hardware.

Thanks for the replies and I'm sorry, i think I've explained myself badly.

I'll rephrase my question:

Are there games on ps5 that can't be played on ps4, and that are worth 500 dollars?
Very few games on PS5 that aren’t also on PS4, not worth upgrading to a PS5 for any of them imo. Would be worth upgrading for better performance for the games that are cross gen though. Loading time improvements are a game changer

Wouldn't you like to get rid of your vacuum cleaner? And have a quiet console? In addition, the Ps5 now has a few very good games that you can only get there and in much prettier.

The ps5 already had a price increase. Due to inflation it could happen one more time. I wouldn't wait too long if I were you.

Astro playroom was worth it. My friend choose to wait and now the PS5 is 50 € more, not less. Sony job is to convince you to buy one, so if you are not convinced wait for the showcase. If no games are worth it then simply continue to wait. For me Bloodborne did it for the PS4 and demon souls did it for the PS5.

I saw RE4 on a PS4 with blurry textures and wouldn't want to play like that modern titles. Also loading times are abysmal on the PS4; compare 24sec in GT7 it takes to load a track to 4sec. Now just do the math on how many tracks you load in a single session.

I didn't even bother to look at replays for the licenses because I won't wait 24sec to have 30sec replay 9n how to pass a license with a good result.

Also the PS5 is so quiet. The disc drive is the loudest part when checking the disc, otherwise it is barely noticeable.

Yea,I've had zero desire to get a PS5 either, although I'm not gaming at all right now.I would love, love, love to see something that makes me want to feel I have to get back into gaming on a next gen console but there is just nothing.

It's a pretty short list. Ratchet & Clank, Cyberpunk (technically not next gen exclusive, but kind of is), Returnal, Deathloop, Demon's Souls, Dead Space.

Spider-Man 2 and FF16 coming up.

It's all subjective how many games makes it worth it and what are you think is unmissable. If you're happy to wait then wait. This gen is gonna be around for a long time.

I bought mine via preorder at launch (and boy am I glad I did, the price is almost €150 more now) and as far as I see it there’s really no reason to wait unless you really really want a slim version. Although, if PS4 slim is anything to go by I don’t really expect a significantly smaller console really, more a change of form factor.

It does everything your PS4 already does but better, quite significantly better in many cases when it comes to framerate and resolution (there are quite a lot of games that have recieved patches to take advantage of PS5, way more than I expected tbh).

And of course: it plays next gen games not available on PS4.
Several very high quality titles have already released and I personally think most heavy titles from here on will be next gen only.

TLDR:
I don’t think PS5 will get much cheaper and I don’t think it will get much smaller (the design will probably change though) so if you have money to spare I don’t really see a reason to not buy it now.

PS. When you do buy it and have used it for a while and go back to play PS4 you will definitely notice how long loading times are on PS4. I noticed it recently when playing The Division 2 on PS5 (it got a framerate patch but loading times are the same as on PS4) and yeah, I can’t say I missed em.

If you’re content as is I’d recommend waiting. You’ll only have more options the longer you can hold out.

I’m not jumping in until the slim/pro and some more exclusives hit the shelves.

As a PS5 owner:

Unless you absolutely have to play GOW and Forbidden West before they inevitably come to PC and you can't stand not being able to play the PS4 versions at 60fps, don't.

There is also no reason to wait unless you are waiting for new models imo

It will improve your experience regardless

If you need to be convinced, then you might as well wait.

The only issue is, I don't see a price drop happening anytime soon. So, if you wait half the generation to only spend full price anyway, you only really shorted yourself.

I assume eventually you'll want games that aren't on PS4. If not, then you probably aren't invested enough into gaming to justify a purchase.

Don’t, if you are perfectly happy for now why buy anything else? Wait till there is a slim model or a pro then upgrade

Represent.

Represent(ative) of bad opinions
Top 5 reasons.

1. Cross gen games are coming to an end, there wont be many new PS4 games moving forward.

2. Every game you like on PS4 looks and plays way better on PS5.

3. Horizon: Burning Shores is the best looking game ever made.

4. PS4 came out a decade ago, its time to upgrade.

5. What is the point of waiting, you will upgrade eventually. Just do it now. At most, wait til they have their showcase in case that new model rumor is true. A PS5 will vastly improve your playing experience. Dont listen to anyone who says otherwise.

I can’t bro. As above. Wait for the slim. I’d even say wait until the slim has been out for a year or so.
Definitely! I bought one because I had the money and it played PS4 games. The only thing I played on it the first year was MLB The Show 20, which didn’t have a PS5 version. It ran better than the PS4, but I probably could have made due with not upgrading for awhile.

Do you have a PC with an SSD? then you know.

Once you used the new consoles, it's hard to go back because everything works faster and smoother.

The SSD is honestly better than the upgraded visuals or the new controller.

Wait....don't you wanna know what made Kratos turn lesbian in the new next gen exclusive sequel for God Of War?

Then you clearly wanna play as lesbian anti-hero in Last Of Us 3

And we all sure want to know bout Alloy's new girlfriend in Horizon 3

Without PS5 all you have is your old lesbian couple in Uncharted: Lost Legacy that you BTW can play at 60fps on PS5.

As a PS4 owner you're going to buy a PS5 anyway. All you're accomplishing with this waiting game is that you're denying yourself the opportunity to play games that run smoother and look better than the PS4 versions you're currently playing.

Even if you're holding out to save money with a potential PS5 slim version, how much money are you going to save? That future PS5 Slim will probably cost around $400 and since it's going to be discless you'll have to buy the seperate Blu-Ray drive in order to play your old PS4 disc games. So in order to save $150 max in Q4 2024, you're denying yourself the pleasure to play these games right now. Also think of the used value of your current PS4. It's probably better to sell your PS4 now than in two years when it's going to be worth next to nothing.

Returnal. (Unless you have a very good PC rig)
Best game of 2021.

Also, demons souls remake.

If those kind of games aint for you, and if you don't feel the need to play FF16 day one, its probably better to wait for a improved model since you already have held off for so long.

Thanks for your answers.

As some peole in the thread already said, yes at the moment I am already convinced to not buy (or not right now) the console. The thread stems mainly from the big numbers Sony is currently doing, and the curiosity if i'm missing something big.
And I feel I am not.

For what I gather from the responses, PS5 is currently mostly a incremental improvement over the PS4. Which is fine for some (no problem in that) but currently not for me.
I bought the PS4 because of the big mass of games it had (The last guardian, gravity rush, Yakuza, Driveclub, Mirror's Edge, Bloodborne, capcom games, and a lot more stuff) and PS5 doens't have this yet.
Games are coming. But again, they are coming. It's in the future, so we'll see when (and if) they arrive.

Why would we care what you buy?

Because you love me!

I think there is at least 1 game, I'm not sure about the 500 thing, though.

my ps5 has been used for 95% ps4 games at 60 fps. i would've just saved a few hundred bucks and bought a ps4 pro instead. astro's playroom is neat however.
