Tom Henderson: Uncertain if PS5 Pro will happen this gen. PS5 with detachable drive might just be a “gen 2” or Regular PS5

I don't think Sony would want to gimp their system with 2 SKU's after the original model has only just become freely available and after seeing how people are complaining about the series S holding the series X back

I mean other than making RT available at 60fps, what else are they actually going to be able to manage this gen?

An RX7000/RDNA3 based APU certainly wouldn't be worth it as it'd at best deliver a bit over 2x the performance of a PS5 given the price and power envelope required of a console. Still couldn't dream of running the meaningful RT effects at high resolutions and/or high frame rates. An RX8000 based APU (late 2024 at earliest) could perhaps reach around 3x a PS5 with more meaningful RT gains. That's so late however that both Sony and customers alike would probably prefer to wait for a PS6 (which is gonna be another cross-gen box the first 2-3 years regardless).

With games probably having quality and performance modes through this whole gen, what would a Pro version even offer?, better ray tracing?.

There have been barely any proper next gen games yet, and its not wise to use Forspoken as some kinf of benchmark as that game is just badly optimized.
Honestly check the new DF vid on Forspoken, and how its using so many last gen features. They even compare the game to FF15 which looks better graphically, and at one point they compare the game to AC: Unity, and its shocking how much better Unity looks.

One badly made game doesnt mean we need pro consoles.

Good. I don't like the idea of pro consoles. These selling well would only lead to smartphonetization of the market with new consoles too often.

The problem is dev time. on 360/ps3, devs could release whole trilogies or more. Gears1-3, Mass effect 1-3, Uc1,2,3,tlou and so on. Each game looking better and better.
Now with 4-6 dev times, the time to learn console is so long, that by the time they release the game, a new console or pro comes out.
On the other hand, consoles are very easy to work with nowadays.

I personally don't think there is a need for PRO. These consoles need to see some games well optimized on them. They have good CPUs, decent GPUs and amazing IO.
There is not much you could to to double the power output, while keeping the price reasonable and wattage around 200-250watts. On PC market side, power comes with WATTage nowadays. Cpus can be up to 300w, and GPUS start at 300w.

And the consoles are difficult to produce and hard to source chips. So slim makes much more sense than PRO.
We can still have 60fps games even on switch. It's all a dev choice.

We ain't outta here in ten minutes, we won't need no rocket to fly through space
It's still not "easy" for some people to get a PS5, we just had a big GOTY winner/contender release on PS4, and people are already talking about pro models. Complete insanity. Playstation have barely fucking even begun their own generation.

Has heard more about PS6 than a PS5 Pro

Please close if old and not pro. 👍🏻

Edit: Can mod change or to of in thread title. Thanks.

"As for if the new PS5 looks like the old one; I think so. I don't think there are any radical changes there tbh."

We don’t need a pro.

The ps4 pro was because of 4k taking off.

8k ain’t happening.
PS4 Pro was made because Sony had internal stats that showed about half way through the life of a console people were migrating to PCs when new hardware came out so the Pro was basically just giving people a new toy.

It was all about the bottom line keeping people in the ecosystem and buying more games, nothing more

That's pretty obvious. A PS5.5 refresh doesn't make sense when there's still massive demand for the PS5. Assuming Sony did decide to release a 'PS5 Pro' the node shrink gap just isn't there to justify the performance to cost and RDNA 3 isn't massively more performant than previous gen. Unless they are/were going to release a $650+ console.

Better off ride out this gen a few/several more years with a single cost effective SKU and addon. Then release a PS6 with specs that vastly outdoes the PS5 - using Zen 5/RDNA 4 (or latest arch+features)+GDDR7.

You all are right, we don't need a PS5 Pro today. But we will need it in 2024/2025, these things take time to deliver on so I rather have them thinking about it today to deliver in few years.

PS4 Pro was released to boost PSVR performance, but due to small VR-installbase it was sold as a general upgrade to the masses.

Xbox One X was a reaction from MS to not fall behind in performance.

Those are no guarantee for "Pro"-versions this gen.
Both were made because the generation launched with underpowered Jaguar CPUs. That's not a problem this gen.

Thats a moot point, thats an issue any gen.

Time marches forward, tech continues to advance, no system is future proof lol

The PS4/XBO CPU was underpowered for 2013 when it launched.

and PS5 and Series X are underpowered now....

Time marches forward.

The reason for a Pro then would be the same for a Pro now. New tech and a market that is willing to pay extra.

Thats it...

Stuart360 Stuart360 The deep lolz, ohhh my sweet summer child, they are not providing something you "need" they are making something someone wants.

Enough have already stated they want a Pro to justify one existing by either company at this point, using this crazy ass logic, why make new series of GPUs? I mean shit, nothing came out that maxed those cards out right? We don't even fucking have exclusive AAA PC games and they are making new GPU after new GPU, cause someone wants it, someone demands it, thus the market supplies.

Thats it. So we are just as likely to see those Pros and I'd say the chip shortage would be the only thing that is really hurting this lol

Pretty much what I said before, the base PS5’s been barely utilized & the last thing we need is another console added to the current-gen SDK, rather have the PS6 7-8 years later. Unnecessary.

Is no one considering competitive edge as a primary reason for releasing a Pro?

If Xbox release their mid gen upgrade then Sony lose it.
They can barely produce Xs, let alone do a mid Gen refresh. They already have 2 SKUs on the market, 3 would be overkill.

I can see a mid Gen refresh from Sony but Xbox? Yeah 1% chance, they're pushing SS these days not X.

Lol, if demand was a problem.
I think demand has leveled off as I am seeing them in stores all over the place and over the weekend a Best Buy near Louisville KY had a ton of them sitting on a display on the floor and stacked 4 deep on a wall behind customer service

Not in my country. Here you still need to place an order online and wait a few weeks untill it arrives. But is better than a few months ago where it was impossible to place any orders.
Sony increased alot the supply since last October or so, but the demand is still there even with a price increase in Europe. Only when the demand starts dropping much more than the supply we will see any kind of price drops.

There is not going to be a pro console. There is no marketing hook for it.

The only reasons the PS4 pro and XoneX existed was to offer 4k support. PS5 already supports 4k.

Neither PS4 Pro nor the One X resulted in significantly more sales.

PS5 Pro won't happen. Unlike PS4, PS5 isn't specced like a charity third-world tablet. There is no need for a PS5 Pro. PS5 games hold up pretty well against mid-range PCs. Something the PS4 could not boast with even from launch.

Definitely not required this gen. The tools to take advantage of the new hardware setup are barely out of r&d stage. There's a lot of headroom left in these consoles.
It also doesn't make sense from a risk standpoint with a looming (or already starting) recession. They need to get the prices down and streamline production, not launch a premium product.
