Plans to cease development on Marvel's Avengers have accelerated at Crystal Dynamics, with sources pointing to an announcement as early as next week.

Marvel’s Avengers has never had a particularly easy time in the press. The ill-fated licensed looter from Tomb Raider developer Crystal Dynamics has seen headlines ranging from “Marvel’s Avengers No Longer Has A Roadmap Coming” to “Marvel’s Avengers Update Leaks Your IP Address” since launching back in September 2020.

The strength of the Marvel brand did little to turn the tides in Avengers’ favor, and criticism that arose during the title’s closed beta continued on throughout its lifespan—namely a lack of content, an overabundance of game-breaking bugs, and a community left feeling abandoned by the developers’ sparse communications.

This all came to a head in a report here at eXputer last December that revealed the end was in sight and that preparations were being made to sunset the title in 2023. Since then, it would seem the situation has evolved.

One of the most boring games I've played in years. The game is even worse because it directly effected the success of the actually great Guardians game.

Credit where credit is due though, it's actually awesome that they're giving the store content away to everyone. It wouldn't have been surprising to be see it all just disappear into the ether.

Avengers is better than GOTG. yeh i said it. I could only tolerate about 3 hours of GOTG. I have hundreds of hours in Avengers.
The maps, banter, cutscenes and everything in GOTG were cool. But the combat sucked. Every character in Avengers plays better than Star Lord. Heck Star Lord in Ultimate Alliance 3 might be more fun than the one in GOTG. Whoever pitched a GOTG game where u just play as Star Lord is an idiot.

hey....want to play an X-Men game where u can only control Cyclops?

So much wasted potential with such a massive IP. A shame, but they bungled it so hard. And I'm gonna say it, Gotham Knights ended up being a better version of it in the long run.

Definitely this. It's so sad that so many people decided Guardians of the galaxy was "like avengers" and gave up on it. Even today I still see people pretending it's the same as avengers, that it's a service game with loot and whatever, while it's not the case at all, but people don't even search for the slightest information and just decided to doom this game.

Guardians of the galaxy is amazing.

I remember the rumblings about how much Square Enix was investing and how huge they were expecting the game to be. What an absolute turd in the end.

So what exactly is still going to be playable after it's shutdown?

I remember when I first played it, I thought...the cutscenes and story seemed like they could be decent, but once the game opened up into this grindfest with GaaS stamped all over it, I lost interest, but thought I might eventually go back and finish the story.

The fact that games get shut down is why I can never get too invested in a GaaS, they're just gonna strip away what I put my time into.

I wasn't sure that Avengers was something that could be played offline, but their statement makes it sound like there is some offline aspects to it, and I wasn't ever quite sure of that. I'm going to assume that the story the game shipped with will be playable, but what about any of the stuff you redeem before the end of service? or new content that was added since launch?

Oh no, said no one.
Right at the peak of Marvel and they couldn’t have fucked it up any worse if they’d deliberately tried.

Incredible incompetence. All it had to be was a mission-based, co-op story.

I hope Suicide Squad doesn’t fall down the same gaping pit.

You're fucking crazy but alright you're entitled to your opinion

Aside from Sony's Spider-Man games, Has any of Marvel's AAA console games actually been successful in the last couple of years? It seems like MvC Infinite, MUA3, Avengers, GoG, Midnight Suns all underperformed?
i'd argue that Spider-Man is the ONLY AAA marvel game. So theres not much to compare. If Avengers, MUA 3 or GOTG had the full support of a SONY backing they would've turned out differently

It's not "last couple of years", but Lego Marvel Super Heroes was a very big seller. Not sure how well the sequel did.
Marvel has focused heavily on mobile gaming. I'm not sure it's possible to get accurate numbers from all those various platforms.

You would think Disney would have learned their lesson from dealing with EA, but it seems like they really haven't.

You do a one-game deal and see where it goes.

They aren't at all precious about who touches their IP and it will cost them in the long run.

Guardians of the galaxy is plenty AAA though...
Great visuals, amazing story telling and dialogue, and despite what many say, I personally found the gameplay really fun. It was a great adventure and I don't see what's not "AAA" about it. The fact that it's a linear story game? But then uncharted isn't AAA either then.

I paid 30$ for it year ago and bought few skins . I was loving the game but was still hopeful that we will get more quality content but they just gave up

Congratz to the teams at Crystal Dynamics,Eidos Montreal and whatever other external studios worked on this garbage.Time well spent boys and girls!

Lets not forget about dear old Square though, they were the ones who came up with this shit in the first place.I hope all the money you lost was retribution enough you dumb fucks!

On to the next gaas garbage then since L has become this industry's favourite letter.

I am playing the campaign now on gamepass and i really like it. The characters are interesting. The combat is fun. It has the potential to be deep. The story setpieces and cutscenes are top notch and I love getting to play as Hulk, Iron Man and Thor in pretty much other mission. The destruction and enhanced physics in the PC version is a sight to behold when hulk starts smashing things.

Not a fan of Kamala's moveset but she definitely holds her own against these iconic characters in both story and combat.

Since the day they showed the generic and uninspired fake faces for the Avengers the games was doomed.
I honest to God never got this argument. Everyone and their mother complained the Avengers in the game look nothing like the movie actors, despite the fact that this is what EVERY. SINGLE. MARVEL GAME. has been doing. So why was that such a problem for THIS game in particular?

Its a shame as it had so much potential to be a decent game, I enjoyed my time with it and did play a good 80 hours or so, it had some great moments, the Single Player especially was a good time

Sad to see it go, but at least they're giving everyone all the cosmetics that they were selling, thats pretty cool of them

And as someone mentioned above, bring back Marvel Heroes Omega! That game was so fucking good and underrated

Game was pretty damn bad from what I played. Some of the most boring missions I've ever experienced once you get to those large open areas.

Both DC and Marvel are desperate to get a GaaS title going, maybe it's time to stop? Avengers failed, Gotham Knights failed cause it was a GaaS title which was then stripped and it ain't looking too good for Suicide Squad either.

Because the faces were generic, like a bad copy of the actor but made with a face generaror. I'm totally sure they invest a ton of effort making them, but the result was something without soul and personality. Have you seen some 3D porn game? Avenger's faces look like that. Better, of course, but equally lifeless.

In fact I remember seeing the first images of the game and thinking they looked like homeless people dressed as Avengers.

I must say I have the same opinion for Guardians of the Galaxy game. Maybe they need to change the person on charge of characters.

Said that, I played both games. Even if I'm very critic with the faces, the rest of the art is very good, amazing in some places.

I'm actually surprised they didn't suddenly pull the plug and close the game entirely over the course of a few days. They keep sinking money into this project and it's not working.

You know what the best avengers Saturday morning style cartoon game is on current gen.

MUA3.

But the guardians of the galaxy game looks alright I hope they continue with that one.

But also on a more serious not. Gaas is all well and good if you don’t have to sink actually money and time into it. Otherwise shit just closing it down whenever they feel like it.

I think that’s why I prefer offline games you can come back to them later on and they are still there.
