Tom Henderson: New PS5 with detachable disc drive test kit in people's hands, "works flawlessly"

Surely you at least understand how it will work and why Sony is gonna do it.

Price wise I guess it'll be something like this

$400 PS5
$500 PS5 + disc drive (bundle)
$120-150? disc drive (standalone)

I get the concept, but I need to see the implementation and the official pricing. Then maybe it will click.

So $399 for the console and $100 for the disc drive. They aint going above the original $499 of the disc drive PS5. Makes no sense.

Got a time machine? Elden Ring, Gotham Knights, Horizon Forbidden West. All $20 cheaper at retail today than on the PS Store.

Retail discs go on sale faster and for longer than digital copies.

You don't need one when you have these wonderful tools that let you track prices. You just have to wait for the right time. But, to each their own.

Good

But this is something that they've should have figured out at release.

They would have been able to produce way more PS5s

Better late then never, I guess

That is true. They have to move physical inventory. Publishers do not want to be stuck with a bunch of stock. Digital prices compete with physical. Digital doesn't take up space in a store though so it is the last to go on sale.

Is the disk drive going to come with it, or a separate purchase?

In which case, would the console + disk drive total to what the current disk model does, or more, or less?

I'll gladly pay more $20 per game for the ability to just download and play.

Imagine if evey time you changed apps on your phone you had to insert a different sd card lol

I never understood this reasoning. Man there are PS Store sales all the time, most going from 50 up to 85 %, which is insane. Demons Souls is on a 58% sale right now, for example. The lowest a disc is going to get is 20 bucks (unless you're buying used), while digital sales go way under that.
I bought The Last of Us II from Walmart yesterday for 9.99

TLOU2 is 2.5 years old and was on sale for $10 on PSN on black friday too, as were many other games.
Yes... and it's cheaper than the $20 lowest price you quoted for disc games unless used.

Edit: sorry for the double post

1 PS5 model to produce instead of 2.
No more PS5 Digital Edition. Just PS5.
Make the disc drive an optional accessory for those who want it.
Can redesign the PS5 to be a bit smaller/slimmer.
Will lead to more digital game sales.

Also creates a perception of a price cut because they will be able to say PS5 is now just $399*
*optional disc drive accesory sold separately

Imagine if it actually looked like that, we don't need additional R&D for this! :messenger_tears_of_joy:

I meant as its kinda funny that you think 150 dollars is ok, but 200 isn't, when 150 dollars would already be a robery.

Honestly, a good price would be 50 dollars for it. But I have a feeling that disc reader would land anywhere between 70 to 100 dollars.
They charge you 100$ for it when it's already internal. Do you want them to charge you 100$ when it's external and has its own shipping box/housing, material, etc?

Sony out of all the companies in the world? they are fighting with Nvidia in second place when it comes to how to rob customers. Right after Apple.

It's very interesting to speculate on how these new sku's will be priced. Do they consolidate their lineup to a flat rate $450 console or keep their current offerings? Do they charge a peripheral tax and price it above $100 or sell it to reach the current disk drive price when both are purchased? I wonder how long it's going to be before we get these answers.

I read something a few months back about MS working on a similiar idea. If they are indeed planning on bringing a similar product out, I would imagine they aren't as far along.

How else would it work? I'd be pretty pissed of if it only played half my games. Exterrnal drives have been around forever in one form or another it would be pretty hard to fuck this up.

Seems fairly pointless to me. They already have 2 sku's that cover all bases. Just make more of what everyone wants.

Inside the PS5 is pretty neat, outside not so much, this makes things worse unless its a slim redesign imo.

why would you downgrade?
What do you mean downgrade? I have 2 PS5s (Digital and Disc drive model)and I want to play some physical games I have downstairs when I'm in the office where the Digital PS5 is located.

Do we have any idea how the drive will work yet? Will it somehow attach to the system or more like a portable hard drive on the desk?

Increase digital game sales
1 PS5 model to produce
make people pay extra for a disc drive they probably don't use/want

nah like 0% chance of a price cut they just raised prices

probably won't work since the current PS5 lacks the necessary extra USB-C port this new slim will have
The PS5 has 1 USB-C port in the front. Unless this new model has a new USB-C2?

Ansphn

Member
read the article
The article does not say it won't work with digital PS5 model. All it says is the new model will have an additional USB-C port on the back. I guess we will find out soon. Hopefully I'm able to use this with my Digital PS5 and this 3rd PS5 model was created to include just an additional USB-C so the front USB-C can be used for PSVR-2.

I went with the digital ps5 this round because I thought I didn't need another drive. Constantly paying Sony prices with no competition sucks, especially when retail copies go on sale quickly.
Yeah I did the same, luckily I sold it for more than I bought it during the early days for 600 bucks and bought a disc version that same week somehow during a target drop. The digital only consoles are definitely trap, there's no way out and I learned that the hard way

Am I the only one who doesn't understand the point?

Who really is this console for
It’s for everyone who doesn’t currently have a PS5, but wants one, either a digital or one with a disc. This way they only produce one unit.

I don’t know how some of you guys make it through each day honestly. This is as simple as it gets 😂

Boy you dumb. It's hard to get one now. What makes you think these will be easier

Why would this be successful now when others have failed for various reasons in the past? Xbox HDDVD, 32x, Sega CD, etc.

for those who wonder about reasoning, you can bet something like this will be the only way to put a disc drive to ps6 as well, if ever.

Many “Whelps”! Handle It!
I feel like Sony is getting away with murder when it comes to the size and physical design of their console. i.e. its big, ugly and isn't stable, mines on its side and doesn't sit securely in the stand thing.

A separate disc drive is off the charts ugly but I get why they would go down that path to save/make more money.

Same. If someone slams a door in my house I am afraid the PS5 is going to tip over.

I'd gladly trade in my lightly-used PS5 and pay the difference for a PS5 SKU with a more traditional design. I am jealous of how elegantly designed and how good the Xbox Series X looks, for example.

SO in the US the pricing is still unchanged, right?

$499 for disc
$399 for digital

I could see them charging $99.99 for the disc drive so that it's essentially no different if you get disc PS5 vs diskless PS5 + disc drive.

Then, I could see them discontinuing sales of both the current digital version and the disc drive version at some point (2024?), coinciding with the release of new slimmed down digital version.
The idea is that the already-released disc drive would cleanly attach to and work with both the original digital console and the new slim digital version.

Plus, they could launch the slimmed digital version for $349.99 and lower the price of the disc drive to $49.99.

That way, existing digital owners who want a disc drive and didn't already buy one only have to pay $50, while new buyers only have to pay $399 total for a full-power PS5 with a disc drive.
My logic is that (if they launch the disc drive in mid 2023 and launch the slim console in mid 2024) they get an entire year of selling what is just a bluray drive with some white plastic on top for $100.
Plus, by having a digital-by-default console only (with the option to use discs), Sony can psychologically nudge consumers toward digital.

This is what I fear.

I doubt that the disc drive costs 100 dollars. This is just an extra effort into poshing people further into digital only. Which I fear will be quite effective.
Yep. They will sell digital and disc drive will be always only separate purchase which nobody will get. Shame

Yep. It’s always cheaper to get the physical. And I am selling Callisto protocol as we speak. I am not selling games almost never but good to have the option

Wait… you will gladly pay 20 more to have a game that you don’t own, can’t get to play offline or v1.0 if you choose too, display on the shelf, sell, borrow, wipe your ass with if you need?!
And here I am thinking people will not pay for getting screwed over.
Physical is the last remnants of our freedoms of choice. Choice how to play and what to do with the product. Some last bits of ownership.
Digital is convenient maybe but psn speeds suck and I can’t do nothing about it. There is only 1 price that is usually higher than physical and you don’t own a squat if there is no internet, no servers or you get hacked.

Sure, I do think about going digital from time to time because I barely have room for games but no

I feel this can be a game-changer.

Imagine if Xbox had an option like this. A Series X with a detachable disc-drive add-on at $399. The $299, $399, and $499 trifecta would have been complete.

I got Modern Warfare 2 a few weeks ago for $59 cad when the game was nearly only a month old (regular price 89.99 + tax = $103) from Walmart. The digital version has not been on sale at all afaik. I can resell if I want and recoup at least $40 easily right now if I wanted or didn't like the game.

Physical still has a place, cleary.

Honestly, I might even have snatched a $399 XSX by now. At $499, it seems too expensive, and the Series S at $299 offers too little value to me (especially, considering you gotta have that proprietary expensive storage).

I hope it comes to fruition and something good does come out of it.

The drive is what usually fails first on a console, so having it easily replaced with a new drive is easier/cheaper than buying another console, or sending it in for repairs and being completely without your console for who knows how long.
True. Very good point.

In addition, a drive is something that you think you need more often than you actually do. Like I get almost all my games digitally. But I still got the Disc edition just in case I wanted to use any of my disks (which I haven't even once in these 2 years, by the way).

So having that option to just buy a disc whenever you want to is pretty cool. No more FOMO.

Thanks. They’re hard to get but if you really want one you could have had the opportunity over the last 2 years if you had planned.

Back on topic though, this makes total sense from a business perspective.

Physical as much as I love it, is going the way of the dodo and we should all be prepared.

Does it make sense? No. Could it happen? IMO, yes.

I go from thinking this could be anywhere from £399 to £449.

The disc drive will be £149 (or more) IMO. Sony won’t release a cheaper way of playing games (pre-owned they take no cut) that they have to manufacture and ship out to you for £99/£129.

We’ll see though. Can’t wait to see this, revisions are nearly always more aesthetically pleasing than launch consoles.

Fully possible this will be a PS5 Slim with the same price as the current PS5 if not even more expensive. They could also phase out the digital and fat versions as a result and move to just this model.

Alternatively, they could read the room on a global recession and put this out for the same price as the PS5 Digital and if they can keep up with demand they could really start selling 30-40 million units a year, which is probably more in line with where they thought they'd be. They have a lot of catching up to do on market share, so this makes more sense to me than increasing the price of the SKU or removing the 400-dollar access price.

I don't think this attachment will work on PS5 Digitals.

It can also be seen as a move to mollify regulators. They probably preferred an all-digital version from the start, but I'm guessing counsel advised them against it. Right now they can charge developers a 30-dollar royalty on digital by saying that they don't make much profit on the hardware and that people can still buy physical discs instead of going to their store. If they went all digital they would end up in Apple Store territory and any legislation that impacts Apple would certainly impact them. This attachment largely shields them from said legislation while allowing them to drive up revenue since people are likely to buy this SKU and not buy the disc drive though it will be available.

My best guess is the new SKU retails for 400 USD and the attachment will retail for 150 USD.

There are plenty of people who don't want/need the disk version and if this allows them to scale up production of the digital version in a meaningful way then what's the problem?
At least here in Europe there really aren't that much, and you can see this from the fact that, both in physical sales spaces and on online vendor, the digital Ps5 is usually the one to last a little longer after a drop, even if the regular vastly outnumber it. Anyway, I'm fine with a console + attachement, I just hope is not a way for Sony to grow the final price of a disc Playstation
