How are they gonna handle the Ironwood part on NG+
Subject players to a LITERAL hour of walking simulator. I will probably never replay this game again.
I enjoyed the game a lot but I have to agree, this game not great for replay and not just walking section but also puzzles, doing first time is somewhat fun but I can't imagine I want to do it all over again for second time.

I desperately want them to re-release the Greek Saga on PS5. I don't need any graphical updates (though higher resolution and 60 FPS standard would be nice), but I know they won't. I genuinely think modern Sony is ashamed of the old God of War games.
I actually played it via PS cloud streaming, on PS5. The experience was surprisingly good! I virtually has no input lag and was able to do any precise moves.

The resolution is only 720p but it is 60 fps. I had some video hiccups but overall exceeded my expectations. Maybe give it a whirl if you have the chance.

Probably because they are the far superior games.
The Greek Saga? I agree, yes, they definitely are. Back in the day, I scoffed at the God of War series and thought it was too streamlined and casual... If only my past self would know how much worse things would get in this modern day and age, where the vulgar elements are sanded down to appeal to "modern sensibilities" and game developers design games for people like DSP.

Just finished the GNA fight. Took me 23 trys on hard.

Finished all the grave stones. Beat the king on my third time.

And just finished with
brok funeral scene. I'll admit I shed a tear. He was my favorite in both games outside of mimir. Rip friend

Just beat it. Heck of a ride. The Atreus sections are the worst parts of the game. Those parts just felt like padding to me. I get why they needed to do them for the story but I groaned every time one would start up. To be frank, the writing seems like a step down from GOW 2018. Not surprising given who one of the writers is. Still you're playing as Kratos for the majority of the game and that is mostly excellent.

Seeing Brok get offed hit me pretty hard. Probably my favorite character after Mimir.

Overall, I still prefer the Greek Saga.

Freya's got a lot of nerve telling me my wolves are matted and asking why I haven't been combing them. I'm a little busy here, lady in case you hadn't noticed. Meanwhile, she left Chaurli's giant house tortoise ass out there to almost freeze to death without even checking up on him. Kill that noise.

Also, Thor's wife Sif is looking thicker than a bowl of oatmeal. Hot damn girl, I haven't had video game feelings like this since Yennifer.

EDIT: I lied, forgot about Panam from Cyberpunk. I might have a problem.

I don't think they are ashamed, but it's bizarre to play Ragnarok if you love the old games. Kratos in the 2018 game felt tied into the old games, but Kratos in Ragnarok does not, Kratos in this game might as well be a new character altogether.

Kratos was built as a dark god that hated the power gods wielded. In Ragnarok, they are, believe it or not, trying to explain how gods have feelings and make mistakes.

They have flipped the entire idea of God of War on its head, and are now treating the gods as human beings. But they are not, which makes the entire thing completely absurd.

They will have gods kill fantasy monsters, travel through realms, go home and have dinner while they discuss their relationships with their friends. It's really built as a sitcom, each god has their own little narrative arc about their issues.

I think what happened is when Barlog stepped away as the director, they took his story and mangled it into one game and hired a bunch of dialogue writers that turned God of War into Uncharted of War, trying to desperately turn this into a character drama where each god has their own story that must be told in 1-hour before their move on. It's a sitcom.

I share the sentiment someone mentioned about mobs being harder than bosses, at least on gmgow. Some enemies have red circle attacks that are hard to dodge and can kill you in one hit if you're less than full hp. There's a part with Atreus where two remnants/witches appear in a small space and if they combo their red circle attacks, you're done.

I probably wouldn't recommend gmgow now that I've been playing for 30 hours. Even though every encounter is rewarding once you beat it, there are many instances in which you die in 2-3 quick hits which can become quite annoying. There are some fights, like the hatfeul draugrs, which I end up cheesing with axe throws just because staying close means I have to be precise 100% of the time, because one missed red circle attack means game over. I was dying so quickly on some mobs that I had wished the loading was a bit faster.

Luckily the combat is very enjoyable, so I don't mind it.

Gow3 got a ps4 release and gow 1 and 2 had several remasters. Just not on ps4.

They are definitely cringeworthy.

lol this is a great take. I personally didn’t have an issue with the story or writing but you do have a point. It does feel like a sitcom. Funny that they said they were inspired so much but tlou when gow was a better written game that ND should’ve copied. Gow 2018 is as perfect a story as you can tell. They are in many ways better than ND at storytelling. Should be getting inspired by Cory not Neil.

I agree with you that writing in GoW 2018 felt "closer" to the original trilogy. Ragnarok feels like they had too many writers in the room. The game is really meaty, but the pacing is all over the place. Still my GOTY though.

To your second point, you have to remember that Kratos doesn't just inherently hate all gods. His murder spree on Olympus was done out of spite. If Ares never tricked him into killing his own family, Kratos would still be serving those same gods.

When Kratos moves to Midgard it's a fresh start for him. He has no quarrels with the Norse gods, and doesn't want any (hence why he's just living in a secluded forest).

It's perfectly fine that he doesn't want to start anything, that does make sense and I buy that, but Kratos also murdered every creature and god that came in his path, he even went out of his way to kill gods who might give him an advantage or a weapon. There is only so much he's gonna hold back like that.

His personality was always about never giving in no matter the obstacle. In this game (this isn't a spoiler as it's the very beginning), it's shown that Freya has been trying to kill him over and over, and coming very close several times, and Kratos just let it happen because she "was a friend". If Kratos died, Atreus would be screwed, which is what he is trying to avoid. Freya stopped being a friend when she tried to kill him, even if she saved Atreus in the first game.

In this manner, the game uses him as a vehicle for telling the story of other characters. He is used for telling the story of Freya, even if it undermines who he is.

I'm not gonna go into any spoiler territory here, but they use him like this throughout the entire game. In the 2018 game, they carefully walked around potential issues of this sort, they did a great job of retaining his somber and dark nature. They could tell stories about how he felt through camera angles and music. This game doesn't know how to do that, and he becomes an insecure hulk. Sony Santa Monica is trying to delve into a story that doesn't work because their subject's history is far more extreme than they let on. You just can't tell a story about Kratos and regret and reconciliation. You might as well tell a story about Superman being sad because he hurt Doomsday's feelings. This is about gods and mythology, this is not about Ellie and Joel like they want it to be.

It's not just about character progression. Kratos is a different character here, maybe only slighty on the surface, but subtleties made him who he was in GoW 2018. You can feel other people brought him to life here, and one is free to prefer "Boi" and "Speak, head" over this Kratos. I certainly am one.

On my way to 100% on GMGOW by the way, only two bosses and 3 trials left to get there.
Final missions were absolutely brutal and when it ended I really felt I accomplished something, like surviving the apocalypse. Some Berserkers after were fun, others I absolutely hated.

Level 9, fully upgraded Kratos and weapons look so damn good I might go for a NG+ when it releases.

im trying to platinum now but i hate having to find all the little shits

Thats just your opinion on that matter.

I don't see the issue here. Everyone can change if they want to.

The Greek Storyline was about how the Olymp screwed him, which led to his family being killed and Kratos revenge on those Gods.

The new storyline was his 2nd chance with a family and his fight against his old self to prevent similar things happening to his new family. Thats why he needed and _wanted_ to change.

3 years had passed since then. He had plenty of time to speak with Mimir about the prophecy he saw about his own death. Plenty of time for change in personality to happen.

The more i sit on it the more I realize the game is more about Atreus' journey than it is Kratos, and in this way is why you get the impression that Kratos is used to tell other people's stories, at least in the grand scheme of the game.

In terms of character progression I think it works. Kratos has changed, he's older and more importantly he is tired, he just wants to fuck off and live without anyone bothering him, he doesn't want to take up the fight to anyone but will absolutely do so if necessary. However he has a stupid kid who's hellbent on stirring the pot and he has to protect him.

Kratos is a flawed character who's emotions and actions are dictated by his past experiences, he's protective and wants to be different because his approach last time did not work and he ended up murdering his family. Here he has lost his wife again so he clings to his son in an effort to not let history repeat itself once more. By the end of the game he is redeemed by his choices, whereas his choices in the past condemned him to a life of suffering and nightmares.

If you go back to the first game, he did what he did to be rid of his memories and nightmares, he doesn't want to keep suffering, but he is denied by the gods. In 2018 after what I assume is many lifetimes, he's been able to move on, his whole demeanor towards gods, war and killing is grounded in this.

He says he doesn't believe in prophecy but he's got a death prophecy hanging over his head and that terrifies him, he doesn't want to live his kid alone in a world that is trying to manipulate and kill him.

It is exemplified best in the story he tells Atreus before Ragnarok about the old man who can no longer carry the logs on his back and wishes for death, then when death comes to his hear his call he instead asks her for help to carry the logs, he wishes to keep living despite being old and tired.

When he discovers the hidden mural at the end of the game he sees people worshipping him as a god on an altar, a path he never believed possible he tells freya. And it goes back to his encounter with Odin as well, where he tells him he doesn't know anything about godhood, about having people loving him because all he is good for is destruction.

I am personally happy this is where they took his journey, having him die in a blaze of anger would have done nothing we havent seen before.

I have conflicted opinions on the black chick from the reveal trailer
angrboda

her being kinda cold when atreus gift her a flower was uncalled for, also maybe try to understand the boy incredible shock for seeing his shitty future and avoid to act so condescending
if i remember right, I read her reaction to that as distancing herself from him because she knew they were parting ways. Like she didn't want to get attached and them hurt when they split

In the original games, Kratos was almost a cartoon character and his actions were way past redemption. He was a dark god and there is no forgiveness for his actions.

In the 2018 game, they had to face that. So they put the story hundreds of years into the future, where Kratos was in a different place and in a different situation. There are almost no explanations for what happened, and we don't know how or why he changed apart from meeting a woman and getting a child. This was a great move from Barlog, we didn't need to know, and there is no need to detail all of it, we can draw some loose conclusions that were enough to accept the new story.

But, he is still Kratos, and the way they dealt with that is by having him be harsh to his kid, and be silent on what he had done in the past and stuff like that. There was a vibe and mood to him that made us remember his past but understand his new ways. This way, they could maintain the character and make him a bit more realistic. It was a tightrope, and they pulled it off.

In this game however they go a lot further, they make him reason more and behave and act like something that does not match his original games. There is a disconnect. He cares and acts more like a human. They want to have a character with traditional story arcs and character developments, completely ignoring that he is at heart, a dark god.

What follows, is absurdity like Kratos cracking jokes and following other characters around, trying to get them to like him and be his friend. He is never the real Kratos in Ragnarok.

I don't think this is the greatest of the games' story sins, the exposition about places and characters that are not developed I think is far worse. For example, how characters force us to listen to history about places we have no association with, the writers are so desperate to "develop and build" the story about each place, that they have companions constantly blabber about what has happened and what each place is for, to the point where the game never shuts up and every companion has voice lines that are completely unnatural and so predictable you can set your clock to it. Every 20 seconds they go off. It's a tired and overused video game story trope.

Wow. This story is f***** amazing. The bosses, the twists and turns. Late major spoilers ahead:

Just yesterday I thought how useless Tyr was... Wow. The reveal and death scene has me shook. I was NOT expecting that at all. I was actually excited for a stealth infiltration of Asgard... Turns out Brok was a god of bullshit detector. Damn so there was no Tyr this whole time?... Brok was such an amazing character. I loved his conversations with Kratos. I'm actually emotional for a game character death.

Edit: When Odin said in the beginning, "don't look for Tyr"... That was reverse psychology. He wanted them to find Tyr so he could infiltrate. This is next level mind games. I hate Odin for Broke but damn. Can't help but respect that genius manipulation/gaslighting.

Fucking brilliant. Just finished.

People complaining about soft kratos don't realize what's about to happen in the next game.

You can't have a massive arc to bloody God of War if everyone is already turned to 11 rage mode.

Wow. What a ride. Didn't expect half that story till the next game.

Best rendition of Thor ive seen in a movie or game. He is awesome.

Didnt realize he was played by BETA in The Walking Dead. Fucking perfect casting.

I didn't realize that was him either. He played Opie in Sons of Anarchy as well. Definitely has a Josh Brolin as Thanos vibe going with his delivery. I'm only about what I think is halfway through the main story, but I'm loving every moment Thor is on-screen so far.

Major spoiler above

Where? I need to know

Any special requirement to find? Or just go there?
First you need to get to Nilfheim. Theres a new area between the training ground and the raven tree.
There you'll find him.

After that you can find him in midgard (north of the elevator to tyrs temple), svartalfheim (by the watchtower looking at Lynkbakr Island) , alfheim (on the way to the temple of light), vanaheim (at freyr's camp) and muspelheim (where ragnarök was created and the 2 valkyries showed up).

At least thats where I found him so far.

I don't know if theres more to it. Though i've visited every realm and place and haven't encountered him again. He will only show up once in every place for an exchange of words. Nothing interesting though so far.
This might just be an gimmick or something else once people figured it out, who knows.

Also you can find Skjöldr near the gateway at 'the derelict outpost' in midgard. He is trying to to retrieve odins coin that atreus threw away. Its stuck in a stone pillar.

You can visit him like 5 times and exchange a few words with him.

Not sure if any of this has more meaning or triggers any hidden event or if its just added for flavor though.

Just beat the King Berserker.. finally, only one boss to go now.
Fight was super fun and fair but damn, I'm maxed out and basically never stopped attacking and still took a whopping 9 minutes. Most resilient enemy in the game.

So, I beat 3 berserkers and they weren’t that bad, but this fourth one… killed me with 1 punch from a full health bar, what in the flying fuck?

I mean, I have tried doing a no hit but the fucker(s) always manage to land 1 punch.
