Looks like a new PS5 model is coming soon

There will not be a pro model.

Could be something called PS5 Pro. Just probably won’t be a similar jump like PS4 Pro was.

Theoretically, the “Pro” name can mean basically anything Sony wants.

I could see them just boosting clocks, give it 2x storage, and launching it for $550.

As long as they don't take away backwards compatibility........................

Honestly, with the kinda enemic AAA releases, I've not been in a rush to pick up either console. There's still to have any "must-play" exclusives so I don't mind waiting for a "Pro Model" But I do look forward to one. I'd like a revision of the console itself, not just it's guts, as I'm not really enthusiastic about it's look.
I'm actually thinking about selling my PS5 due to the lack of proper current gen titles. We only get upgraded versions of last gen games. Ratchet and Clank aside....

I guess it's an internal hardware revision, maybe they're using a 6nm APU but in that case I don't think the 7nm production will be totally discontinued. They could sell both models to improve supply.

Could be an interesting way to increase production on Sony's part.
They have maxed out their 7nm production and are now also making 6nm PS5s to add additional supply.

Probably yeah. Overlap. Keep making the 1100 model, at least for a while.

And they may want to start putting some SoCs into servers to enable PS5 game streaming via PS Plus.

I could see them continuing to use 7nm wafers for those, while moving most of the console chips onto 6.

What about the dualsense drift problem? Do you guys know if its sorted?
My Dualsense that came with my PS5 is from June of last year and still has no drift issues. Put significant hours into Demon's souls,Returnal,Spider-man,Elden ring,RE2 and 7. So I think they might have done a minor update? Maybe the new controllers they released last December are better.

I heard some rumours but nothing certain.

Probably. PS5 is big as fuck because the hardware is not easy to make, so a Slim version should also be delayed too

We still have cross gen games as a normal thing two years later, so a Pro version should take more time than that
You guys need to stop mention a pro version. Revisions are fine, but we don’t need a pro model of the ps5 or series x. Stop accepting and normalizing shitty practices

Probably reducing the size of the heatsink again, and making it a plastick one. Also no power cord socket or on/off button.

This will also explain the 18m this year forecast. More chip access between the current 7nm and soon to be 6nm.

Teardowns are electronics porn, so looking forward to those.

Anyone thinking you are getting a slim revision anytime soon are deluded. Once PS5's are readily available in stores and sitting then from that date add 1-1.5 years and you might see one. There is no incentive to make a slim version now as they sell out in seconds.
The Slim version would be cheaper to manufacture then the current version (smaller or lesser chips, smaller cooling...), so if you can still sell them for the same price you have a huge incentive to do a slim version.
And you can produce more chips from the same amount of wafers, hopefully resulting in more units out in the markets. That is also interesting for Sony.

I don't know why people expect there will be a PS5 Pro just because the PS4 had a Pro version. The PS4 needed a Pro version because the base model was increasingly not able to even maintain 30 FPS on many new games. Base PS5 is far better in that regard.

This is not the PS5 Pro. It is the second revision of the existing hardware. The first one changed the heatsink. Current PS5's are made on a 7nm die. This is a 6nm die. The likely intent here is to increase available production by switching to a die that is not as high in demand.
it is likely that the better manufacturing process is in an even higher demand.
The shrink to 6nm would make the die smaller, which means you get more chips per wafer, so if the price for the better wafer is not too much more expensive and the yield is OK it is cheaper to produce in 6nm. And you have more chips

a die shrink is not always tied to a slim release.
the 360 had 2 die shrinks before they released a Slim model for example.

the PS4 1200 also had hardware changes that reduced heat, component sizes and power consumption.

Yeah. I pointed that out in a later post that you get more dies from wafers at 6nm compared to 7nm. But Sony's CFO was also quoted as saying they changed who they procure their orders from. Whatever they did, it amounted to a 56% increase in expected shipments for this fiscal year. It was stated they made that forecast based on what they see from the parts they're expecting to get. So clearly they made a move that puts them in a much better position.

Hopefully they replaced the glossy black plastic for matte black, like they did with the revision of the PS4.

I always hated the glossy covers. I remember vividly how I'd clean my fat PS3 and that shit was like a stain and scratch magnet, by the end o a session it'd be all "dirty" and full of stains from my index or thumbs. Same case with the OG PS4.

These are a must daily on gloss electronics and the like. A massively less greater chance of scratches or blemish scuffs.

To go mildly off-topic... what's the current situation with using a PS5 controller on a PC?
Does it work okay or do you need 3rd party software (DS4Windows?)?

(My Xbox One controllers' A button is playing up and I'm in the market for a new controller.)

Oh, I use those already. I leave one exclusively to clean my consoles in the living room and I always carry one in my case to clean my notebook. I just tend to lose them a lot.
