They made us rebuy PS2 games on PS4 instead of letting us use the emulator they created to run PS2 from disc. Of course they won't let us use their latest emulators without paying extra.

They should, but I don't think they will.

Glad I still have my PS3, a system that can still play all my digital PS1, PS2 and PS3 purchases from the past :lollipop_smiling_face_eyes:

Given another chance
Then I won’t buy one, and blame the people that want convenience over every downside and nothing else
I completely understand and agree with you. Unfortunately physical only gets you so far before the medium becomes obsolete. The later versions of PS3 for example stopped supporting physical PS1 and PS2 games I believe.
At some point, as infuriating as it is, these companies stop supporting their previous hardware.
Digital is the same too. They can stop supporting their previous works at anytime, or publishers can just turn off their servers and deny access to their online games.
They claim we just “rent” the titles and own nothing.
I’m very selective what I purchase now. I’m a drop in the ocean for sure, but at least they aren’t making much money from me anymore.

Yes you will. Literally nobody is going to give up a hobby just because it moved to digital, much in the same way that you haven't stopped watching movies or stopped listening to music when those two forms of media became primarily digital.

Absurd false equivalency that unfortunately people always trot out when this topic comes up. I literally just googled "Groundhog Day movie Physical Copy" and this is the first result: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00005U8EM/?tag=neogaf0e-20

A movie from 1993, available in a variety of formats at many different price ranges. You're straight up deluding yourself if you think the situation with games and how they're sold is normal.

Honor? There is no honor.
They will let you rebuy at full price and don’t forget to add the steel case for that digital game.

Why is this a question? Those games were relicensed for use on PS3, PSP, and Sony was only able to update the license for a small number of games for vita. This will be a new emulator, with fresh licensing deals for the games, which has certainly become more expensive now than it was in 07. Could they? Sure, but they'd be eating cost, and current Sony leadership isn't about eating ANY kind of cost.

With ps1 and psp games getting fresh native ports for ps5/ps4… will sony honor the classics we bought back in the Vita / Ps3 era? I bought a bunch back in the day myself. I could see it going either way, or they could just say they’re only available as part of the sub service.
After watching how anti-consumer Sony has been for years on this very topic (& others) you could see it going either way? Really?

(Spoiler Alert: The answer is HELL no)

Only the top tier PS plan at $18 US/mth gets access to Sony's old games. The basic and mid tier dont.

Getting a year -what most people does, according to Jim Ryan- it's $10/month. And in cdkey websites these things typically can be acquired with 20%-30% off discount, so you could get it for $7-$8/month.

And at least until now all PS Now games have been games available to be purchased outside the subscription on the platform being streamed (PS3 or PS4). Sony said PS1 and PSP games will be downloadable on PS4 and PS5, which means that super likely you'll be able to buy them outside the subscription, even if we'll have to see if are crossbuy with the digital PS1 and PSP games from PSP/Vita/PS3.

You completely miss the point. The actual availability of physical media is largely irrelevant because the primary way of consuming media happens through streaming for both TV and Music. The vast majority of music is still available on CD's or other forms of physical media, but that's not how most people consume it and if it were to disappear, that wouldn't change anything for the vast majority of people. It's not quite as extreme for video but its clearly going in the same direction. DVD sales have been down 86% in little over 10 years and now makes up for less than 10% of all sales. Blu ray sales are even worse.

Put it this way, if you're an average person then:

- You haven't purchased a music CD in decades, you stream most if not all of your music:
- You stream the overwhelming amount of video content you watch with maybe a DVD/Bluray purchase here or there.

When you consume other forms of media almost (if not entirely) fully digitally, it's rather silly to have such an extreme position as "I will not buy a next gen system anymore if they are fully digitial!" imo.

Actually it's worse for video. Physical sales has plummeted so quickly, there's now only ONE duplication plant in the entirety of North America to produce Blu-Rays.

Do you the ones you brought on PS3 via digital? I believe so.
The retail disc for PS1? Definitely not.

Any case all games will be available as standalone to be purchased.

Current consoles bought and physical games bought are still going to work, why should anybody give up the whole hobby?

Not happening. It would be awesome if they did that, but companies are on the business for money and they will do whatever it takes to keep receiving more of it.

This. I still have my 2010 slim w/very little miles on it. I’ll probably pick up a super slim as a backup at some point (I hate the form factor but my guess is it’ll be easier to find a good one).

The super slim is fantastic. Small, insanely quiet and cool running. Use mine every now and then.

Where is that said?
Also, players who have previously purchased the digital version of select games from the original PlayStation and PSP generation will not have to make a separate purchase or sign up to PlayStation Plus to play these titles on PS4 or PS5. When these titles are released for PS4 and PS5, players can head to PlayStation Store and download a version for the consoles at no extra cost if they already own the digital version of the title. Some of the titles will also be available for individual purchase.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
