TLoU Part II is on sale for $20. I never played it. Do I want to?

I played the first one and really enjoyed it.

I've watched the commotion about the second from a distance and was put off enough from what I read to refrain from buying it.

$20 isn't horrible, but I don't want to waste my time with crap. The gameplay seems to be similar to the first, which is fine.

So, simple question: Is the story worth playing through? I'm a big boy, and don't need a story to cater to my sensibilities. I only need it to be good.

Is it a good story? Is it well-told with good pacing and interesting character arcs? Is it worth the 20+ hour investment?

I know the big stink is what happens to Joel. I can live with that, if the story that follows is good. But I do not want another 'subverts expectations for the sake of it' trip.

So what sez you?

I just bought it. I loved the first game and considered it my favorite game of the PS3 era. I avoided all the spoilers on TLOU Part 2 and pretty much ignored everyone and everything. I just bough it for $19.99 and will start my journey hopefully this week.

Don't if you value TLOU1's character personalities/motives etc. They got fucked to suit the narrative and subvert expectations.

Wait for Factions 2. Hopefully its all gameplay, no story.

Edit: I still love that TLOU gameplay engine, and was impressed with the accessibility options. I mean I was able to tell the game to let me punch whilst aiming, as a preferance choice. Which was great because that's my panic move on TLOU1 Factions. I did something else, I think it was to do with marking enemies, but I can't remember anymore. I was impressed.

I seriously hope TLOU Factions Online (Does it even have a name?) keeps the gameplay and lets the story minimal. I already expect TLOU1 Remake to further futz with established characters to bring them in line with TLOU2's portryal.

It is unfair to the gameplay engine to be shackled to the narrative. #BringBackBruce

Even if you don't like the story its the best graphical looking PS4 game ever made next to Red Dead 2 and the gameplay is just as good as the first one.

Be advised the first couple hours is story buildup & tutorial. It has more open-ended levels than the original but at first its even more linear.

It's a very divisive game. I personally loved TLOU, but TLOU2 doesn't hit the same mark at all IMO. Doesn't even come close. But I thought it was fine. The graphics are great, the music is great, some of the gameplay is great. But I just felt like the writing, characters, and flow was just weaker through and through than the previous game.

But hey $20 is a good price to find out for yourself.

It's absolute marmite. I hated the story and didn't particularly love the gameplay but on a technical level it's outstanding.

You won't know until you play it, just go for it.

I enjoyed the first game, but thought the sequel is a bad paced game with a boring story and a gameplay too similar to other games, including the first entry in the series. Wouldn't recommend, unless the idea of stabbing hundreds of people in the throat seems like something you'd enjoy.

It's just 20 bucks tho, so...

It is a very well reviewed game. People will have their own personal opinion, but i highly doubt the game is bad and still warrant all the accolades. I'm starting TLOU I on PSnow. For a person that doesn't like cinematic games, it's quite the feat, but damn it, i need to see and play it with my eyes.

Give it a try on Youtube or just buy it. 20 bucks are not much.
Here you will most likely get 50/50: best game ever made <---> complete trash

Speaking strictly from a gameplay perspective, the game is excellent. I enjoyed replaying the same combat scenarios over and over, especially on harder difficulties or with perma-death enabled.

Not quite Metal Gear Solid level of stealth/action, but damn close.

I thoroughly enjoyed it. You might like where it's going with the story, or you might hate it. But the visuals/gameplay/combat are almost universally praised. It's a steal at this price.

It's one of the best games ever made visually and story wise.

The commotion comes from the loud minority of "gamers" who prefer their games to be fronted by muscular, confident, men (preferably white) in cod-pieces or tight fitting, military attire with a lot of weaponry. Since gaming welcomes all, their opinions are still valid and free to be discussed.

It's nowhere near as good as the original but it's still a good game.

And for what it's worth, I haven't played TLOU since it launched 9 years ago and I still remember loads about it, it's only been a couple years since I played TLOU2 and I've forgotten most of it.

Well worth it for $20.
If you liked the gameplay from the first then you‘ll like this too.

I have my complains about the lack of action, dramatic and rollercoaster scenes, Ellie gets compared to the first game like, Henry and his brother, David and Bill’s town etc. Its bigger than the first game which I really like, but lacks some of the moments. And less Clicker moments in TLOU2.

But there are a few moments like the birdge, island and the end which are some of Naughty Dog’s best work. Overall the attention to detail, combat, world, voice acting, animations is 2nd to none.

If your gonna cry because a fictional character died too soon then maybe dont buy it

The developers could have easily given a rinse and repeat experience with the sequel but they took a chance. Some have loved it and others have hated it. I personally thought it was one of the games of the generation. Definitely give it a chance and see where your opinion falls.

Story is a catastrophe, but if you ignore the most important part of a heavily story drive game like this, the graphics and gameplay are pretty solid.
If you like sport games, just as people like racing games on Batman Arkham Knight.

Hated the story cuz it destroys the characters from the 1st game. Its still a good story and its well told. But the gameplay is much more refined than the 1st one and thers really great locations, and even if you hate the story like i did, the game is still worth playing, cuz overall its a great game.

Sarcasm? I think most of the criticism is directed to character personality portrayals in 2 betraying 1's, and the blatant attempt to retcon 1. The Remake will only bridge that gap, and the original left as a vestigial brsmch branch on the tree. It's the believability of the characters and setting that people dislike and the nonsense storytelling to fit Druckman's newish beliefs and wanting to tell his version of TLOU1 even though it was decided against because they couldnt make it make sense, and that whole thing.

The game is very divisive. For $20 I would say get it. The gameplay is solid and whatever your feelings might be on the characters and their stories, the game is worth a play through.

Regardless of the story beats, for $20 the gameplay and experience is absolutely worth it.

You will either love the story, vibe with a bit of it or dislike it. Doesn't really matter. Yes it has some indulgent strands for the sake of it but at the end of the day you play games for the game.

Amazing graphics, great gameplay, but ultimately one of the worst, most pretentious stories I've ever seen in gaming. Absolutely zero nuance, respect for the property it built up, plot holes constantly, every character feels completely re-written from the first game, etc. Its ultimately up to you to see if you like it, imo because its a story-driven game with a bad story, its a 6/10 at best, even with how great it plays.

This is such an ignorant and condescending post.
The story is divisive because, without spoiling anything, its completely disrespectful to fans of the first game, and Druckman writes the game by essentially re-writing basically the whole cast of the first game to fit his self-masturbatory, cliche'd, and plot holed filled idea of a part 2. There's plenty of legitimate reasons to shit on the story, its a matter of if they don't bother you or not. And its not just because of who lives and who dies; its how its written and the way the whole story is conveyed that is absolutely divisive and not because of how profound it is; its because of how profoundly awful it is. There's a reason why the first game is universally loved and was a smash hit, whereas the second game has never had its sales data publicly released after the first week.
But with the take you seem to have with this game and its critics, it explains why you'd like the story in the first place.

King of Gaslighting
Still haven't beaten it. Not because it is a bad game (it isn't) or that there's anything wrong with the story (there isn't), simply because it is absolutely fucking bleak and I'm legit curious how they are going to get any kind of hopeful ending out of this game given where I left it. The bit in the "spore basement" is one of the roughest scenes I've ever watched in a video game and it doesn't get better (even recognizing that getting to that scene was a rough experience).

TLDR: The game feels like the "vidya game" version of THE KILLING (if anyone is familiar with that show).
