According to Famitsu, the KH4 footage shown in its debut trailer is running real-time in Unreal Engine 4. However, the game’s development team is currently testing Unreal Engine 5 in parallel, it’s claimed.

“The full game will be made with Unreal Engine 5, and the quality of lighting and detail will be several levels higher,” according to Famitsu.

Early 2027 release...

Sounds like a joke but it is very likely.

KH3 was announced in 2013 with a concept video which then they announced they would switch to Unreal Engine 4. Its the exact scenario.

They also said that they were in the process of selecting which worlds will be in the game. The same thing happened with KH3.

Didn’t they announce the Unreal switch for 3 after they realized Luminous was an unweildy bitch of an engine that took forever to do anything with?

They showed a game that doesn't exist yet. Nomura just doesn't learn from his previous mistakes. If we get this during PS5's lifetime, it will be a welcome surprise.

You can just tell by looking at Sora's model that it is not even close to being finalized. I wonder why they felt forced to announce this for the anniversary. Everyone knows it will happen, but this just makes people excited over something that doesn't exist yet and wont for many years.

Anyone excited for FF16?

What mistakes? It’s good to know it’s being developed, way better than being kept in the dark.

I dont know anything about engines, but Im guessing it will still take time to utilize the unreal engine 5 improvements. Its not just click n go right?

Some improvements can be fairly immediate, but obviously you'd have to tweak things, and if you want to use completely new functionality that adds more time.

Normua's strategy is to do project pitch meeting publicly lol.

It is a feature not a bug. Nomura markets his games like a Gotcha game itself. KH games are the Gotcha of story telling.

This is why it is so good to have another developer on the in-house AAA title development:

The mistake of showing a game that doesn't exist yet. This is literally a vertical slice of a concept. Remember FF Versus 13 -> FF15 trailer? None of that made it to game. So why should I assume any of this makes it in to game either?

Just announce it like Metroid Prime 4 or Dragon Quest 12 if you must mention it.

2013's KH3 trailer made to the final game. Don't care if it bothers you, the fanbase is pleased. whatever.

Not really .KH3 was announced with zero development at the time. After a year or two of development, they switched engines to Unreal after failing to use Luminous due to its needless complexity and frustratingly obtuse design. Couple this with Nomura randomly getting saddled with FF7Remake which he was unaware he would be working on at the time (Which also had similar issues as this, and his ongoing work with FFXV/Versus XIII which was in dev hell for numerous reasons both partially his and partially not).

Hopefully this time development is faster. I imagine licensing negotiations had to begin since KH3 was being made. Also hoping that the switch to Unreal 5 doesn't take a long time either. Still, it looks like it could be rereleased not sooner than 2024.

I cry about Xbox and hate PlayStation.
Why does everyone say Matrix ran at 20 fps? I've seen this repeated whenever the game comes up. Sure felt like 30 to me. Maybe it had dips at certain moments but otherwise it was 30 fps.
watch thd digital foundry video.

And dont forget matrix is a tech demo, once you implement proper gameplay features, it will use more CPU /GPU power.

Should be way faster. That year+ of having to learn a new engine (UE4) and re-do everything including the Kingdom Shader with III was unfortunate. But if it's UE4/UE5 there's probably no delay outside of the COVID stuff. That said, I still think it's Q1 2024.

I'm guessing we'll see news at Disney 23 Expo in September since it's held every 2 years and it's this year.

I still wonder how ubisoft could pump out open wrold Assassins creed games every two years and square enix can on,y do a full KH game every other generation.

Reverse groomer.
nice to know that not only will the game be overwhelmingly autistic with its writing and setting, but it'll now have realistic, generic graphics while doing so! so excited dude, cant wait for it to come out in 2029

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

Ubisoft throws literally thousands of employees and different studios to craft different parts of their games and bolt them together. Doesn't always end up super pretty but they have an efficient as fuck pipeline for it.

Yup. It looks like UE with its basic default lighting. It's sad Square can't get them to use their in house engine because it's just too advanced for them. Why did they turn off motion blur when the gameplay started. It looked nice until they started the fake gameplay that everyone actually believes is real. It's using the engine but it's scripted crap.

This will be out by middle/end 2024.

Development should be far more streamlined this time around, compared to III, thanks to having devs experienced with the Unreal Engine, having decided on an engine, and they seem to have finalized a game concept and direction. Only problem is, game probably hasn't started full scale development yet and experiments are still underway. 2024 sounds about right to me, assuming development goes smoothly.

I imagine FFXVI will stick with whatever engine it's currently working with as that game should be in its final stages. FFVIIR2 will probably stick with Unreal 4 as word is that one has been in the works for a while. Part III, they'll probably switch to Unreal 5 at that point.

Kh4 look good from the trailer. I wondering if I should pick up 3.....its looks fun but that story tho...

Its a solid game, best gameplay in the series imho.

The story is.......look its not that great, but I never really thought the story was good in that series at all and I still enjoy the games lol

People love to say the MGS series has confusing story and I have to call bullshit on that, yes some nano machine shit and people coming back from the dead thru arms and shit exist, but you can understand majority of that series, where as Kingdom Hearts.......even someone who loves that shit has a hard time telling me what the fuck is going on and recently replaying the whole series on that PS4 collection, I realize those games are not as good as I remember in terms of story, they are pretty awful actually lol So I say, pick up 3. Its a fun game, don't go in there looking for a good story, its just as bad as the others lol

I'm super excited for this since I'm fan of KH series and enjoyed KH3 a lot but I hope by developing this in UE, it doesn't take forever for the game get released.

True. I expect a smoother release, same with the next FF title too.

They showed a game that doesn't exist yet. Nomura just doesn't learn from his previous mistakes. If we get this during PS5's lifetime, it will be a welcome surprise.

imho, thats not even Nomura's fault, thats Squares. He might be directing the title, but Square owns the IP, studio etc. They need to fucking stop this shit and focus on a streamline marketing set up, sorta like they are doing with FFXVI. They showed us gameplay even with its first trailer and it was in development for years. That is how they should be doing things going forward, i love the KH IP, but I don't feel this was right to announce so early and rough like this. That city looks like shit, it looks so fucking bad, you'd think you are looking at a PS3 game lol

Love yea Swift but I'm going to have to disagree here. With this mans track record, Square should never allow any of that shit to be announced early. As a concept artist myself....we love the beginning of everything lol Watch 2 weeks later he is like "dat girl....she now the main character, that city....a dream, you know what...no longer in the game" (turns game into Kart Racer RPG) With any other studio, I might agree and say sure, like Insomniac or something, but Nomura just has a history of this and I think Square should have made some limits on when at trailer should be shown. I was ok with this until I read the shit is barely in production at all.

I'll change my mind if he sticks to his plan and I'm open to be corrected in the future on this, but as it stands.....I feel this could have waited until it was deep in development vs a idea.

Missingnomer Missingnomer keep in mind, you and Swift both make logical points. Yes, FFVersus and FFXV have many things different and left behind, how much...a thing of controversy, but to Swifts point, KH3 didn't suffer from that and 2013 to 2017....well for them that is a solid time frame lol So 2026 or 2027 may not be that wild of a release date for them. You both bring up logical points for why one should be worried based on Versus, but why they may have gotten their act together based on KH3 reveal, release.
