LIST: Here’s every Activision Blizzard IP Xbox now owns

What does that even mean? Is anything Gamepass exclusive? You can outright buy anything on Gamepass. I just believe that StarCraft being a first party MS title will have a significant effect on the quality and scope of StarCraft 3.
Since when does Microsoft have a track record of purchasing studios and then improving the quality of their games?

And unless Microsoft starts making stuff Gamepass exclusive I don't see how Starcraft (which sells in the single-digit millions) is going to move the needle much on Gamepass adoption.

Ok, I don’t know what to tell you. I am fairly certain that MS didn’t spend 70 billion dollars to not improve the quality of the games they bought. If I’m wrong, then I’m wrong.

I honestly don't understand how Activision could be worth 70 billion. Bethesda has much better IPS and was only 7.5 billion. 90% of that list of ips is trash.
A/B makes roughly $8bn per year in net profit. Now obviously depending on Microsoft's choices concerning exclusivity, game pass, yearly COD, etc. that could change, but it will still be incredibly profitable even if MS does everything it can to lose immediate profit (all games exclusive, everything day 1 GP, ditch the yearly COD cycle) merely due to King pulling in GTA profit with Candy Crush alone.

2 points though.

1. MS couldn't have picked up A/B for $70bn a year ago. Gamers were pissed about the quality of the games for a while, but the harassment revelations did serious damage to the company over the course of the last 6 months. Combine that with Blizzard's China shenanigans for the past few years, and you get enough people outraged to hurt the bottom line. As much as I love my Xbox, MS is a ruthless company. They went for the throat when investors were likely feeling skittish.

2. At the risk of wading into politics it's going to take years to get inflation under control, and that's going to cause cash-rich companies to make some huge investments in the near future. MS has a lot of cash on their books. The $70bn dollars in liquid cash it cost MS to make this purchase simply won't be worth $70bn in 2 years, and owning A/B will make profit, achieve strategic goals, and most importantly not lose value just sitting in the bank.

Expect a lot of large purchases from any company with enough cash on the books in the next few years.

This acquisition will need to be cleared by antitrust regulators in the US, Europe, and China.

They will be pretty interested in knowing exactly how it benefits competition to have all these franchises under the control of one platform holder who would likely withhold the content from other platforms. If they don't get the answer they like, this acquisition will have lot of challenges getting approved.

Can you explain in which kind of metric, Microsoft + ActiBlizzard being the 3rd biggest publisher, constitutes some kind of monopoly?
Tencent and Sony are bigger and there has been no problems with them growing by buying other studios which further consolidates their positions

I could go for a new Soldier of Fortune. Even a retro style would be cool, that way they can keep all the dismemberment in.

Geometry Wars needs a comeback story.
Maybe XGS can re-hire the Bizarre Creations team and put them back to work on PGR and Geometry Wars.
MS buying Activision feels like April Fools joke. Cant wrap myself around the massiveness.
When I heard this news I had to check the calendar on my phone because I thought I fell into a coma and woke up on April 1st.

Totally, would love if they brought PGR and Geometry back aswell. But I wonder if they think PGR would eat some of Forza's pie. I'm not saying it would. I do know it would probably be my primary racer on the console.

Forgot about Tenchu as some of you said. First game was awesome. Never played the others.

Didn't realize the series was on such a downhill fall after the first couple games.

Last game made was long time ago. You'd need a big splash to make it a successful franchise again. Dont think the modern market cares about stealthy games like this anymore.

80% of those titles are dead for all time mark my words, do you seriously think impressions' City builders are coming back? Games like true crime died natural deaths. Empire Earth, Gun, Soldier of Fortune.. this is a padded list.

Why would this need to be reviewed outside of the USA. Arent all the studios involved inside north america?

I also dont think they will care about benefitting competition when this is more of an issue involving fair treatment of employees.

You look at that and it's hard to understand why it's worth so much (more than all of Nintendo). It's just ridiculous how big Call of Duty is. Candy Crush too.
World of Warcraft. Whenever they make WoW 2, they are gonna earn billions from that alone.

Now listen to me right now Microsoft, Make Guitar Hero, Xbox OST Edition. A version of Guitar Hero with just songs from your own IP's. You own plenty of OST out there where this can be possible and the cost will only be on making a the game because you don't need to pay for the music.

It’s like 4 times as large and has a shit ton of mega IP. COD and Wow are bigger than anything Beth has in the public perception.

That was the company's market value. It's a publicly traded company. It has X shares at Y price. X*Y = market value. If you want to buy a company, you have to offer more than market value. Bethesda was a private company.

A/B makes roughly $8bn per year in net profit.
That's revenue... net profit is around 600 million/year avg.

Let Raven make another Soldier of Fortune. I have fond memories of those games.
It's very hard to reboot old franchises. Esp SOF where you could dismember enemies. It was a gorefest.

Looked at my shelf, MS should use their AI research and do something with this one 😋

Microsoft got mugged off here for sure , they cant be worth what they spent

You are crazy. They're worth well more than what Microsoft paid, same goes for Bethesda. Activision's true value is in the $80-$110 billion range.

If the range of IP they got across Blizzard and Acti you don't feel are big, there are all the studios, the manpower, the talent, the technology such as game engines, lighting, effects, animation, tools, cinematics teams, anything and everything they have in there is now Microsoft and Xbox's own.

But if that doesn't mean anything to you, consider that the purchase includes a money making machine in King aka Candy Crush.

Check out their latest quarterly report. No, that isn't a typo, Candy Crush generated more revenue and also brought in more income than Activision and Blizzard Entertainment. More revenue than each, more profit than each.

This is from July 2021 to the end of September 2021. And the potential of turbo charging the popularity of World of Warcraft with an Xbox console launch, along with upcoming games like Diablo IV (PC, PS4, XB1), Overwatch 2 (PC, PS4, XB1)
