The Game Awards 2021 Nominees

I really need to finally play "It takes Two" to see what the fuss is about. Me and a friend already own it and have been meaning to go through it for a while. Not typically the kind of game I play though.

You gotta understand, this is a mainstream awards show, it's SUPPOSED to only have the top 20 popular games running through all the nominations. It's supposed to be like this, it's made for casuals. Oscars, Grammy's, every awards show follow this model. Don't take it too seriously. (As long as Metroid Dread wins GOTY we are good.)

More importantly, has someone figured out who kyliethicc avatar is yet?

No Forza Horizon 5, RIGGED. Game was by far the highest rated of the year, even Bayonetta 2 who was snubbed out Goty in 2014 was nominated.

This is the first time in the history of Awards that the highest rated game is not nominated.
It's hard to believe it didn't even get nominated for game of the year. At least it got a few other smaller nominations and XGS first party studios got a TON of nominations.

Forza Horizon 5 is more popular than all these games, it reached 8 million milestone in a week, none of these games except forza are reeking popular at all.

I'm pissed off they decided to ignore it, anyone who wasn't calling it out because it was a racing game said it would be a easy win, can't win if they still keep with the conception that sports games are for pleb.

If R&C doesn't win with this pathetic list then it's something fishy to stop Sony's GOTY streak.
Pathetic list? All of these games are great! If the game of you favorite box does not win, just get over it.

The only thing I don't like about this TGA stuff, is that they miss a lot of titles of the end of the year. A shame that FH5 and Halo Infinite couldn't enter the list. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It's not 2021 highest rated game but wtf! Where is FH5 and Returnal?

My choice is Resident Evil 8

It's released too late for a GOTY judgment.

People haven't played it enough in time for the nominations. It was only nominated for obvious stuff like presentation because you don't need 100 people to play through it to figure that out.

Nope, it was released on the 5th, Shin Megami Tensei V came out on the 12th. The cut off was always 15-19th.

Is it? It's a great game but GOTY material? Nah.

But then again, pretty much every game on that list isnt GOTY material. Save for maybe It Takes Two but even that game wouldnt have made the GOTY list in a year like 2020 when GoT, TLOU2, FF7, Hades and Doom Eternal made the list. Ratchet, Deathloop, Psychonauts and even Metroid Dread and RE8 are the kind of games you play and forget about in two weeks. Let alone be remembered for the end of year awards.

Returnal is lacking high production values when it comes to story and storytelling. Its story feels like one of those PC indie games like Ethan Carter. Like dude, spend some time and effort on proper cutscenes. You are charging $70 for this game. The gameplay is good but man it felt like Uncharted Drake's Fortune. A good first try but a lot of room for improvement. It's also far too limited in scope. Thats not the kind of game that wins GOTY unless you really go above and beyond with the storytelling and completely nail the gameplay loop like Hades did last year.

Every game on this list feels like its missing something. Either not epic enough. Or too samey. Or just plain forgettable. Even if Metroid or Deathloop win GOTY, no one would dare compare them to previous winners like TLOU2, GOW, Witcher 3 and BOTW. Horizon 2 is that game. Massive in scope, epic setting, a true big budget blockbuster that also gets critical acclaim. Sucks they didnt make it this year. They wouldve won by default.
Nah Returnal had some amazing gameplay and the story legit spooked me out when it hit Act 2

Flight Simulator seems like a clear choice for the sim category, but I’m curious how it made the 2021 nominees. Wasn’t its release date August 2020?

No, the deadline is November 19. I'm guessing they don't expect any games to announced the next few days so they went ahead and did the nominations. Either way, FH5 just didn't make the GOTY nominations list.

"Games eligible for The Game Awards this year must be available for public consumption on or before November 19, 2021. Titles that are released after this date will be eligible for The Game Awards ceremony in 2022. (Similarly, games that were released in December 2020 are first eligible for this year’s awards)."

It is, only the late release of Hades on PS4 and Xbox One are higher, FH5 is by three points the highest rated, doesn't make any sense.
Nope

A few are rated higher.

Really surprised FH5 and Returnal didn't get nominated for GOTY. I guess press thought that Returnal was too hard which is funny considering they all couldn't stop gushing about Hades last year. Also how the hell is no one from GotG nominated for best performance? Oh right because we have to have both of the people from Deathloop up for it instead even though it wasn't that good. We all know why the gaming press likes that game

Many of the games you listed are great games as well...not as high budgets but you telling me a game like Ghost of Tsushima or FF remake is far more deserving than Deathloop or Psychonauts 2? If argue against that...this has been a great year.

But it's nominated in other awards, so isn't this the year it's "eligible"?

To those complaining about Horizon, I don't think anything is "rigged", Horizon just isn't as good as the nominated games. Going by "critics reviews" as what to use to generate the list is silly. I think Returnal should have been on the list but I'm not crying about it. 🤷‍♂️

All of them are re-releases, FH5 is the brand new this year.

And this is the fcking problem with gamers/media!! Returnal isn’t even nominated. A new ip that is truly amazing. A developer taking risks to deliver a new experience and we screw them over to not even mominate them. We nominate a mediocore game with its 7th entry in a series.
Gamers/Media bitch that they want something new and when we get something new and refreshing we choose to ignore it and reward the “safe” option.

They were allowed... They just didn't.

Yeah, phrased it badly - I more meant, why on earth didn't the panel of 100 critics include the most critically acclaimed game of the year

Nope

A few are rated higher.

They're all ports that wouldn't qualify and one visual novel with 9 reviews

I bought and played It Takes Two with my wife for about half a dozen hours total.
We stopped playing it because of the weirdly obscure let's-bring-the-separated-parents-back-together backstory that honestly took us away from the game.

Regardless, it's a fun game but I think it's a bit overrated.

i know forza is just racing and none of us actually expected it to win but not even a nominee? come on! it deserves that at least.

anyway from that list, resident evil village was the one i enjoyed the most.

How are Psychonauts 2, Deathloop, It Takes Two safe? lol They are not the kind of games that are rewarded GOTY nominations.

And Hades got the nomination last year. It was also a new IP, a rougelike, and a riskier game. It's just better than Returnal in almost ever aspect. It has raised standards for rougelikes and Returnal just wasnt able to match them.
