Which was better the Splinter Cell series or Metal Gear series?

The games are so different that can't be compared (not objectively of course), as they play by completely different rules.
Splinter Cell tries to emulate realism while MGS is a fantasy that reinvents realism.

They're both great at what they do.

MGS series however, is without a doubt, one of the most influential franchises ever created, in more than one way.
You'd be hard pressed to find another fantasy game that manages to turn so many outlandish concepts into a surprisingly coherent and meaningful experience.

It is splinter cell for me. Even the story of metal gear was always so absurd that I couldn't really enjoy the game.

Metal Gear Solid

Like even if you just were to take the MGS games as a hollow shell and play them without going deep and connecting the dots and getting the referencen then MGS would still be better. But there is so much more to MGS and it is rightly so one of the greatest franchises ever created.
I am always confused when people just don't get it. They legit don't get it. How they can look at things from a purely superficial perspective and have no clue what it is actually about and being blissfully ignorant about.

No disrespect to Splinter Cell or anyone specific. It isn't meant as an attack or anything, but god damn MGS 7 days a week over Splinter Cell.

Splinter Cell for me because Chaos Theory is not only one of the best stealth games (up there with Thief) it's also simply one of the best games, period.

I played the first Splinter Cell as a kid and the controls were confusing as fuck on original Xbox.

I could beat MGS on PS1 as a kid without a guide so...

MGS.

MGS and It's not even close.

SC a slower stealth game like its first day, it'd just be derided a lazy hash of its originals. There's so much the MGS series offers than just pure stealth, from the story to the characters to the main. The latest MSGV is phenomenal. Sneaking through encampments and strongholds has never felt so fun, so fluid, with stealth dynamically affecting whatever comes up etc.

Sam fisher has nothing on Big Boss or Solid snake :messenger_sunglasses:

Its like comparing a Ferrari to a Toyota lol

metal gear is so much better they are not even competing in the same universe. mgs 1/2/3 are absolute classics while splinter cell has maybe 1 classic game with chaos theory. mgs5 elevated the stealth genre to such heights i think it's the main reason why we haven't gotten a new splinter cell yet. i know people have their problems with the mgs5 story but in terms of gamplay it's a 10/10.

I should replay Conviction, I got it with Games with Gold or something a while back. Thanks for reminding me. Anyway, they're both good

I play each series for different reasons. The stealth in Splinter Cell CT and Blacklist (along with multiplayer) really appeals to me. I think MGS is the overall better package and is so unapologetically gamey.

MGS1, 2, 3 and 5 are top tier to me.
Splinter Cell CT and Blacklist are my only 2 top tier SC games.

I can see arguments for both sides.

Metal Gear by a landslide.

Splinter Cell had the more impressive stealth and gameplay when it launched, but it was also very trial and error. Splinter Cell is your usual high tech western espionage game with faceless badguys. It has a throwaway story and cardboard characters. Though Ironside did a great job. I would beat a few levels of an SC game, and then quit for the time being. I don't care where the story goes.

Metal Gear is much more replayable, there are more secrets, easter eggs, it has ridiculous melodrama, and more easter eggs (also in cutscenes). Its campy and it breaks the 4th wall, its aware its a game. The story is insane, but I always wanted to see them through.

Must of us can remember many set pieces of MGS. The characters, the story.

But I can't seem to remember anything about splinter cell. Can you?

So I would say MGS by a good margin.

This is what I wanted to add. SC is just not memorable. I beat the first 4, but I remember little of it. The 4th had this double agent theme, you were deep undercover in their ranks, being sent across the world to do shit. But I barely remember any characters or even the ending.

SC has some decent levels, but it falls to shit when you get into shootouts (this is pre-Conviction SC, I haven't played the last 2) you're better off reloading your save.

Yep.

Basically, SC and MGS are completely different. 2 differents Schools: western devs x asian devs.

SC was all about top visuals and pushed realism, everything else exists for the sake of it.

But MGS....come on, Snake is a fuckng legend.

I've never played Splinter Cells and we were always arguing with my best friend which series was better when we were kids.

As I've come older I'm pretty dissapointed with myself that I never played Splinter Cell games because they look really cool and to be fair the stealth in that game seems better than MGS.

MGS1-3 are one of my alltime favorite games though and MGSV has the best stealth of all games I've played.

How would you guys compare the two series? I am aware that Metal Gear leaned more heavily on the sci-fi side while Splinter Cell was more realistic. In your opinion what were the highpoints and low points for the series.
Gameplay for the first 4 splinter cell way 100% better then mgs and also innovated the gebre metal gear created, but after double agent splinter cell went down the pan, even though i enjoyed blacklist and conviction they just never as good as the rest, mgs always had a way better story though and actually hit peak gameplay for the franchise with 4 and 5, both have pros and cons cant really say which one i prefer cause mgs story is cool af while the gameplay for 2 and 3 just had shitty controls

I only played whatever Splinter Cell games were on the original Xbox, and I literally can't remember anything about the games. All I know is it was a lot more stealth gameplay focused.
Meanwhile MGS2 is one of my favourite games of all time, so MGS easily wins for me.

In my mind I think Splinter Cell crossed the finish line while MG was still on the starting block, so definite victory for Splinter Cell. :messenger_beaming:

Loved MGS2 on Xbox though.

Still hoping for another proper Splinter Cell. Linear not some new open-world take. The only open-world concept I would except for this game is maybe something similar to the mini open worlds of the hitman reboot.

in general, metal gear games are considered some of the goats of the industry, splinter cell games are not. seems pretty clear most people would choose metal gear as the better series, myself included of course.

Unbelievable!

"You shall not take the name MGS, your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain." – Exodus 20:7

Anyone who picks Schplinter Zell over MGS should hand over their gamer cred! Immediatley! Your gaming license has been revoked! Also stop making stupid topics!

This is a bit like comparing western RPGs with eastern ones. They were even made in those two regions with similar feelings when you play them. Metal Gear had those boss battles and crazy ass characters and ideas.

Splinter Cell had a real solid core gameplay, but Metal Gear felt like genius... especially with all the bizarre characters and cut-scenes. Splinter Cell also felt more confined and linear, with not as many options available... especially compared to Metal Gear Solid 3. MGS also felt more expansive in terms of story. If you include MGS5 then Splinter Cell has no chance, but I don't know if it's fair to include it. Then again it's not Konami's fault they didn't make any more Splinter Cell's or go for an open world game. Every other franchise they own sure has!

There were also more mediocre Splinter Cell games. They pushed out quantity then acted surprised when sales went down. MGS1 - 5 were all pretty great in comparison.

**I am a fan of both.

Old MGS's still have tight gameplay.
Old SC's are horrid to play.
Blacklist is kinda underrated, but overall MGS takes the cake easily.
One had Spies vs Mercs. The other didn't.
One had Spies vs Mercs, the other had MGO.
As much as I adore SvM, it was the jankiest shit ever, even when it came out.

I tried each and every splinter cell game. I disliked all of them. Sam Fischer just wasn't an interesting character to me.

Haven't played MGSV (which would probably affect my opinion heavily), but based on MGS 1-2-3 and Splinter Cell 1 through 6:l and what I've seen/read about MGS 5, Portable Ops, Peace Walker:

Splinter Cell has vastly better mechanics
MGS has vastly better characters and story

As complete products:
MGS1 = SC1 (just about)
MGS2 > Pandora Tomorrow (vastly)
MGS3 = Chaos Theory (both masterpiece so)
Peace Walker > Essentials (obviously, lmao)
MGS 4 > Double Agent (both Double Agents)
MGS 5 < Blacklist (strictly talking as overall products)

I personally preferred Splinter Cell gameplay/stealth, but Metal Gear wins out in story/characters (with the exception of Sam himself, of course). I also really like boss fights in Metal Gear. Hard choice for me, but I'll give SC the edge.

MGS by a country mile. I love the early Splinter Cell games, but MGS is just too unique and special plus groundbreaking in the industry. Much more varied between the games too and is my all time favourite game series.

Also, Sam Fisher is cool, Snake/Big Boss are ICONIC.

Splinter Cell had the better gameplay while MGS had the better story. Some of the things I've experienced in Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, I've never experienced in a game before and since. I actually feel games have regressed gameplay wise from that.
