Which was better the Splinter Cell series or Metal Gear series?

How would you guys compare the two series? I am aware that Metal Gear leaned more heavily on the sci-fi side while Splinter Cell was more realistic. In your opinion what were the highpoints and low points for the series.

I haven't played a ton of Splinter Cell, but I do plan to with the new game. With that said, the Metal Gear Solid series changed my life. A tell a friend of mine all the time he'll never know how much of an impact he made telling me about MGS1 and letting me hold it in the 8th grade.

With that said,

Highpoints for MGS is games 1-4 with 3 being my favorite. Low point is MGSV. Game is utter trash. A great game with great gameplay but from a story ark garbage.

Can't speak for Splinter Cell, but I can say Sam Fisher made a fan outta me in Ghost Recon Wildlands with such elegant words...

"Unidad show up, you turn on the lead faucet"

What a world-beater. :messenger_tears_of_joy:

I didn’t bother with Splinter Cell. By the time Splinter Cell came out on Xbox I had already played MGS1 and MGS2. I had no interest in another stealth game. I’ve owned just about every Splinter Cell game over the years, but I have completed all the mainline MGS games. MGSV is one of the games I’ve played the most hours on PS4, right next to Bloodborne and Witcher 3. MGS is military and history mixed with science fiction. It’s perfect for me. I’ve also owned artbooks, models, music, and etc of MGS. I’m a bit of a MGS fanboy.

MGS takes real history and turns it on its head. It feels crazy at times, but it takes a much more grounded approach outside those moments. It plays on human reasoning behind controlling a nation or being a force of destruction. Even when it gets goofy and there’s no logical reasoning behind what’s happening, it’s very entertaining.

I prefer Metal Gear, but I don't find them a lot alike other than they're third person and have stealth. If I'm in the mood for purely stealth I'd prefer SC. If I'm in the mood for story, depth, boss fights, customization, etc, I'll go Metal Gear.

They're very different styles of games and shouldn't rightfully be comparable to one another.

However, for the sake of the thread: I guess if I'm choosing, I'm giving it to the Metal Gear franchise. It's been more consistent for me in terms of quality (even if V was massively disappointing) than Splinter Cell has been.

I prefer Splinter Cell overall but MGS3 is my is on top of my list if we're allowed to mix and match in between the two and CT being the second.

MGS. Its the complete package with great story, stealth, action, interesting enemies and bosses.

Splinter Cell was more focused on stealth mechanics and did them in a more realistic way. Only played the 1st 2 Spliter Cell games, loved them, but not as much as any MGS.

Splinter cell is definitely better and more realistic, even conviction is an amazing Jason Bourne game.

Even the worst MGS title imho is better then Splinter Cell. I like both series, but MGS has a massive edge.

I still think Ubisoft can really make Splinter Cell a great series again if not better then what it was prior....here me out folks before killing me lol

Wildlands is already in that MGSV ball park in terms of concept, open world, AI etc.

Put Sam in that type of thing with buddies that help him out like dropping him off to some area, add hitman elements like him blending in (or AC as that was a thing in that series too early on) . Have areas that are clearly legit kill zones like bases, but also have civilian type areas where he must blend in to kill, capture, save, collect etc. Give a day and night cycle and have the NPC behave as such and we could literally have the best selling Splinter Cell in history with a whole new generation to carry the legacy. I love the old Splinter Cell stuff, but it needs more depth, never mind just beating a level, what happens with Sam when runs to get the extraction point? Making it a massive open world allows for even getting to some LZ part of the fun as MGSV did a great job of this, it wasn't JUST about grab a person and mission complete.

Waiting for it to be dark is part of it
Putting C4 on the power generator to take out their power is part of it
Sabotaging the communications is part of it
grabbing the hostage during the chaos clearly is part of it
but over all, making it to the LZ to be extracted is part of it and adds so much.

This concept might work better for what Splinter Cell is more then even MGSV. Big Boss destabilizing entire regions might be a work of fiction, but The United States doing this is complete objective fact. It fits and Sam going after high valued targets or saving diplomats or making the choice to go against orders and saving little kids caught in the cross fire can help build a deep narrative in absence of Konami doing any major MGS.

We all talk shit about how Konami dropped the ball, but I question why Ubisoft didn't take advantage of that as they sold less then MGS, not more. This concept can work and it would be a day 1 for me as Splinter cell is still a solid series and I'd take Splinter Cell open world even with a new team, then anything Konami has for MGS outside of a just a remake or something. MGS might be the better series based on what it was prior, but Splinter Cell has a strong publisher with many teams to really make it have a massive comeback.

Also note that they don't even need to waste time with Sam Fisher lore, its already understood that if and when he dies one can and will take his place. Customizable Splinter Cell Agents can also work as that is part of the series that they are interchangeable and disposable lol I know there is a name for this type of wet work in government circles, but I don't recall

early Splinter Cell, while it has been a very long time seemed like a better stealth game. All the lighting tricks etc were amazing at the time. MGS just became a bunch of anime schlock after a while and got too silly for me. MGSV was awesome tho.

In terms of the tech, I think both did wonders. I think Digital Foundry has some video up for MGS2 as that game back in the day was running on some fucking sorcery type shit lol Early SC games did have some amazing tech with shadows though. Over time in terms of just features, MGS best Splinter Cell, the story though I'd say is subjective, but I do get where you are coming from with it being very Anime like lol

MGS4 in general just took that shit too far, as to why I actually like MGSV more, even with hating V nonexistent story, I'd rather have that with solid gameplay.

Konami probably should have just had Snake really kill himself ending of MGS4. I love the series and I'd be 100% ok with it. They can still do prequels with him and just have Raiden or even Sonny become the main characters to keep things fresh, but things got overly anime at some point lol

METAL GEAR SOLID 2: SUBSTANCE (ORIGINAL XBOX)

Splinter cell 2 (1 for me)

These 2 are the best in the series.

I mainly lean to splinter cell, due to the realistic OP tactics, compared to metal gear series.

I liked how sam used shadows, locks. Ammo was scarce, and some missions were highly dangerous with low ammo. Splinter cell Pandora tomorrow Gazza mission was hard. Especially, when you try to kill certain someone. I had low bullets, and I had to sneak around carefuly, so enemies dont kill me.

Also lambert was funny all the time.

I like both series, but overall Splinter Cell is better IMO.

Favorite in each series is Chaos Theory and MGS3.

EDIT: Forgot to mention the amazing online in Chaos Theory. Super fun gameplay with Spy vs Mercs. Easily one of, if not the best, multiplayer games ever when it came to stealth.

Can't wait for another splinter cell, fuck knows why they abandoned it UBI's best IP in my eyes.

MGS 2 had that camera angle, which made the game less fun. Compared to Pandora tomorrow, which was kinda hard to find your exit.

No doubt on the realism front. MGS was crazy with the weirdness, but I think that is what made it really cool. In that respect they are actually very different.

Absolutely love splinter cell (I'm a sucker for stealth based games) but these two are not even in the same league. MGS is miles and miles ahead of not just splinter cell but any other stealth game as well. Just my opinion.

MGS. More inventive story, more imaginative, more fun to play, and more in-depth gameplay. It’s an iconic series. Splinter Cell has more realism in terms of stealth, but c’mon… that’s it lol.

I don't think the two series can be compared? One is like Mastro's and the other is like Sizzler.

Edit: Not meaning to shit on one over the other. They are very different, and I've had fun with both.

Metal Gear. Those games are all masterpieces. Not to take anything away from Splinter Cell (I very much want to see a sequel!), but Metal Gear is legendary for so many reasons. Maybe the gameplay is mechanically more complex in Splinter Cell than anything outside of MGSV, but even then I prefer the simplicity and creativity of Metal Gear. Shooting ice cubes in MGS2, holding up guards for dog tags, messing with enemies in all sorts of ways; it's more alive than Splinter Cell. They're all PACKED with small details.

Chaos Theory was the best stealth game until MGSV came out, so they're both tied for me.

I really, really want a new Splinter Cell though.

MGS is more diverse and has more potential imo.
What I mean with that is that it has more fun stuff that can be done because of the sci-fi factor, you can have far greater variety of enemies and villains and stories that can be told.

Splinter Cell all things considered is fairly limited and gets kinda boring imo.
I do like the franchise but it's still just dude with pistol shooty other dudes with guns sneaky sneak.
And the narratives are basically just generic spy and military stuff.

It’s weird. I’m more fond of MGS because of nostalgia but I’ve always preferred Splinter Cell because they were more grounded and fun to play. Splinter Cell holds up better IMO.

If I focus entirely on the gameplay only, I'd say the best in genre is Chaos Theory, hands down.

I enjoy Metal Gear's story/presentation more...but that's not enough for me to call it the better series. Ultimately it's about how it plays. So with this in mind:

MGS > SC1
MGS2 > Pandora Tomorrow
MGS3S < Chaos Theory
MGS4 < Double Agent (OG Xbox)
MGSV > Conviction
Survive/Revengance < Blacklist

The strength of Chaos Theory (really, it's fantastic) is the tie breaker for me, so I'd say Splinter Cell edges out the win.

Splinter Cell by an absolute landslide, fantastic gameplay, tech and production values.

Metal Gear Solid is tedious swill, with far too many interruptions for long, pretentious cut scenes. And the controls were always bad too, until MGS5. Garbage franchise, and I’m glad it’s done with.
