Famitsu Sales: 9/13/21 – 9/19/21​


Tales of Arise remains on top.

Famitsu has published its estimated physical game software and hardware sales data for Japan for the week of September 13, 2021 to September 19, 2021.

Tales of Arise for PlayStation 4 was the highest selling release of the week, adding another 33,128 retail sales. Neptunia x Senran Kagura: Ninja Wars for PlayStation 4 was the highest selling new release, opening at 18,789 retail sales. It was followed by BanG Dream! Girls Band Party! for Nintendo Switch, which opened at 15,398 sales.

On the hardware side, the Switch family sold 40,068 units, the PlayStation 5 family sold 16,084 units, the Xbox Series family sold 4,376 units, and the PlayStation 4 family sold 747 units. Next-generation consoles continue to face stock issues.

My guess is that the actual active Japanese audience on the PS5 is closer to 300K which would mean every owner has bought a game and a half physically.

Based on the known figures we know that Tales of Arise, Resident Evil: Village, Demon Souls, and Miles Morales are making up around 50% of those sales. Meaning that all other titles on the PS5 combined are around 250K.

For comparison in the same timeframe, PS4 had sold over 2 million software with 5 titles surpassing 100K sales(something no PS5 game has achieved yet in Japan)

This is really a great confirmation regarding PS5 software situation, especially it came from a Japanese sales insider like Gibson.

So, where are the software sales being recorded for those phantom PS5s? Is there a market somewhere with more software sales than total hardware sold?

If Switch sales were consistently this level I would agree. But I don't think it's a coincidence that the numbers have noticeably dropped just before a new SKU launches.

On an unrelated note, Arise looks like it could have some good legs. A testament to it's quality.

Switch is way down this week, but that can be easily attributed to the imminent launch of the OLED model.

Arise did a fine second week, all things considered.

So if it wasn't the most in demand console of all time WW and scalers weren't buying them who's to say more Japanese fans wouldn't buy instead? The demand in Japan is clearly nowhere near satisfied or anywhere in the world.

Honest answer. Japan loves Nintendo games and it's not just a Japan thing. They are on top of the charts in every territory but in Japan it's just completely dominated by Nintendo games. They don't really care for Sony's offerings especially in recent years where ever their Japanese games have been westernised. Vita flopped in Japan btw. I don't know where the misconception that it did well there came from.

Ultimately it comes down the software. When the HD era came in and Japanese publishers struggled with the costs a lot of Japanese support went to the cheaper to develop for handhelds (Kingdom Hearts, Dragon Quest, Monster Hunter etc. etc.). The audience followed where the games went).

PlayStation was then able to keep your good Japanese support in the later years with by offering a multiplatform strategy for third parties (PS4/PS3/PSV). This allowed the third parties a way that be successful both in the West and in Asia (since the 3DS was not successful in the West and the Wii U was not successful anywhere).

With the Switch Nintendo has a platform that is successful everywhere and is much easier to support than the 3DS ever was (no 2 screens, standard controls, easier to port etc.). It's therefore attractive to third parties to be more balanced with their support for Nintendo/PlayStation than they were during that Wii U and 3DS games.

PlayStation's initial success in Japan was built on luring away the third parties fed up with Nintendo's shitty behaviour with N64 and offering games Nintendo didn't have. Over the last few years that advantage is being eroded.

On top of this the balance of power between Nintendo and third parties has shifted. In the PS1 days the combined power of third parties was stronger than Nintendo's output. That is still true in the West (FIFA, COD, Assassin's Creed etc. are just as big as Nintendo's big hitters and they come out almost every year) but not in Japan.

So TLDR: Being able to be used portably definitely helps Switch, but the software is far more important. A Vita which has the same third party games as Switch but not the first party ones would not do nearly as well.

There's little reason to expect decent sales from PS5 (installed base of over 1 million) when NSW+PS4 software sales in Japan are atrocious (with a combined installed base of over 30 million)

It has nothing to do with Nintendo.

Japan has become hostile to third party publishers' traditional games, and PlayStation merely reflects their decline. Fortunately, sales are booming in the US and Europe and, therefore, PlayStation and the japanese publishers have no reason to change.

In 2021 Japanese third parties have sold the most on the Switch followed by PC...

Monster Hunter Rise alone has out-sold the three highest selling Japanese third party games on the PS4/PS5 - Resident Evil Village, Nier Replicant & Tales of Arise and all of those games appeared on PC

Since Japanese third parties big efforts weren't on the Switch during it's first four years on the market it makes sense why they haven't been achieving great sales on the system. Its only late 2020 with Momotaro did we get our first 1 million seller in Japan on the Switch from a Japanese Third Party.. by this time 3DS had over 8 different third party million sellers in the country.

Right now the only competitive major market is Europe and thats basically the only places where Japanese third parties might sell better on the PS4/PS5 compared to the Switch but even this is questionable considering Tales of Arise is selling under 10K units in the UK - Sony's stronghold.

He probably even overestimates the digital ratio, so PS5 has a sub 1x attach rate. Scalping basically confirmed.

Also Series likely gonna beat lifetime One sales in its first year lmao.

Two points I'd argue on this is that Nintendo is more competitive in the UK than they are in other areas and I wouldn't call the UK Sony's stronghold. That would probably be the Nordics.

Also been though Switch will outsell the PS4 in North America, Sony is still definitely competitive there.

I'd agree overall Switch has made Nintendo competitive in the UK again but its a Sony stronghold compared to other major markets like US, Japan, France, Germany, South Korea, China etc.

Yes that's if you look at just the main European markets that's where Nintendo is weakest, I agree with that.
 
Retail space for Xbox games is very limited in Japan I believe. Can be challenging to buy physically on that platform.

Yep. My local BIC Camera has nothing at all for Xbox. Yamada Denki has a couple of controllers, and Flight Simulator.

A bigger Yamada Denki in the town has a few Bone games, mostly years old but still at day one prices, and flight sim. No consoles at all.

I'm not sure if voice of cards is getting a retail release (it's multiplat I believe) but Digimon Survive should still be coming this year.

Xbox like ps5 is being bought by scalpers for the rest of Asia.
Most likely people are just buying games digitally or are using Game Pass.
It is not easy to purchase games Xbox games physically in Japan. I rarely see them now. They were a bit more prevalent at the start of the X1 generation in some stores, but they soon disappeared for the most part, at least in my area.
You have much better luck trying to get a physical Xbox game via Amazon JP.

Since I bought my Xbox Series X (on launch day from the Microsoft JP Store), I haven't bought any games physically for it. I have Game Pass Ultimate and the games I have bought have all been digital.
Physical games for the other systems are much easier to find compared to Xbox. I buy physical and digital games for my Switch as they are much more widely available. For Xbox in Japan? Not so much.

PS4 user base is still very active and bigger than PS5, this is the exact opposite of Nintendo WiiU and Nintendo Switch where Nintendo Switch active user base is very prominent right off the bat. This kind issues makes the developers that want to prioritize PS5 only game is scaling back to make sure PS4 version is available at launch such as RE8 when the developer was happy to announce last gen version lol.

Sony would be the one to say.

First of all, if demand was so high in Japan as you imply it to be, then scalpers would be reselling them in Japan, and people would be buying them.That's just a principle of the market.

Secondly, if Sony did indeed believe there was a bigger demand there( A bigger demand than the PS4 or the PS3 did, for example), Sony wouldn't be ignoring Japan as they have been since launch.They are the ones that have most access to the data, and understand better than anyone their situation there. And this data that we just got confirms that the PS5 will (likely, but not certainly) be down compared to PS4.

It's not me saying that, its the data that is. Not that Sony cares that much, they are more than compensating elsewhere in the rest of the world, but it can't be denied that their situation in Japan its at its lowest.

Voice of cards better get a retail release (well in japan doesn't benefit me, but still) as some one that actually looks at art books occasionally, I want a collectors edition with one

This is a genuine question and not in anyway shape or form an attempt to flame - why is PS struggling so much against Nintendo in Japan?

Is it simply because Japan, as a territory, has switched (pun not intended) to handheld gaming? Do they have a culture of actually meeting up and playing on handhelds in cafes, or something? Or is it specifically the IPs - like Monster Hunter and Splatoon?

To put it another way, if Vita 2 was released, would it absolutely explode in the market?

Nintendo Portables do great. And now they are doing even better because its console quality in a hybrid.

Plus they are releasing great niche smaller titles, and alot of JRPG’s. They don’t normally release that many JRPG’s on there consoles since the Snes. They do on portables though.

The N64 had less sales then the Sega Saturn. The Gamecube sold horribly as did the Wii U. ( I love all 3 consoles btw )

A PSP3 would only do well if they port the PS4/PS5 library and carry on releasing games like the next Dragon Quest, Persona, Final Fantasy. But they would also need those smaller and niche titles like the original PSP and Nintendo handhelds. Otherwise it won’t sell well. The PSP sold great, more than the current 3DS and on Par with the GBA so no reason it won’t sell well again.

They just need to have the smaller nicher portable like games that Japan loves, plus the console library

It just surprises me that Sony isn’t looking to target that handheld market too. They certainly still have many game Ips on side; Atlus, Capcom et al - all could produce killer titles for the Japanese handheld market.

It simply surprises me how Western focussed Sony seems to be these days. Not that it isn’t working; obviously selling gang busters in the US and Europe.
