well every time I saw the guy walk (I watched the gameplay The Act Man uploaded) his arrow disappeared from the radar, which usually signified that you are not on the radar in other Halo games. and in one instance a bot was walking backwards without shooting and he wasn't on the radar either... I might watch some more and see if I notice anything

edit: nope, clearly not on the radar if you don't sprint, watch this encounter where the bot doesn't shoot and doesn't sprint

Actually I'm wrong, the longer scan I read about was Reddit speculation, not fact.

I think it doesn't fit the game/universe and the way campaign levels are designed in Halo. so rocket jumping and stuff is totally ok in halo, but not to the degree it is in Quake.

I edited my comment above with some video clips of how rocket jump like movement used to work in classic Halo (it seems Infinite drastically reduced that btw... which sucks)

I see, that looks right.. wonder why they took it away.

I'm excited to play it, and coming from warzone the pace should be just fine I guess lol

well this is a tech test and some hope that this is a side effect of some stuff they tweaked for the test. for example team mate collision is off as is friendly fire, but that's only for the beta it seems.

grenade jumping doesn't work in the current build, or it's so hard/weird to pull off that noone found out how to do it lol (it was already weird in Halo 5 so who knows)

I finally got to download and play a bit. It took awhile because it kept telling me to check back later when I would try to download. Gunplay feels pretty good and I am not the biggest fan of Halo gunplay. Matches, even against the bots, felt paced well. Graphics are okay but nothing I would brag about. Over all, it is going to appeal to Halo fans but not sure it will make someone "switch sides" and get an Xbox. No worries though because there are more than enough Halo fans to carry the game.

I did have one freeze where I had to close out the game and relaunch it. Other than that, it ran well. Played on Series X. I might try PC but with reports that it is not optimized I will probably stick with console for this flight.

I just saw this video on Reddit:

It seems you can change direction while grappling. Pretty cool. I thought it was more like a beeline direct to the point sort of grapple.

yeah the july campaign demo and some of the clips in the MP trailer made it seem pretty "heavy" and like point A to point B, but the grapple feels really good to use. Almost like Pathfinder's in Apex Legends but not quite as.. idk accelerated? Still feels good with plenty of control and the ability to cancel early.

I’ve been playing since I was able to yesterday evening, and overall this is a technical preview, not a beta. Yes, it was a rough start just accessing it, but that’s expected. I went into this with modest expectations and understanding this isn’t a final representation of the game that ships this holiday.

Regardless, I really like it so far. It feels very much like a mixture of different classic Halo elements (Halo CE to 3), but refined, with some new minor additions and improvements but it doesn’t get itself too carried away from the original play style. I like the unique art style and art direction, it very much feels like Halo from the early 2000s but re-interpreted for the 2020s but with some modern day polish, and not too many gimmicks like we see in a lot of games today.

Gameplay feels good, the guns are all pretty much great for the most part, and the sounds — specifically on the sniper rifle, bulldog shotgun, and the rocket launcher is really awesome, you have to play the game to understand and hear the effects.

Also, many people were concerned with the addition of the “grappling hook” thing, but so far in multiplayer, it just works as a normal power up, like an over shield or camo shield. It works for a few uses and then that’s it — it’s pretty cool. I was originally under the impression this new grappling mechanic was default for all Spartans in multiplayer but I guess that’s not the case? I think this is the good way to go assuming this is the way it’s being used.

Honestly, I really like what I see so far and I know it’s just a tech preview. I can see Halo becoming really big again with what they’re doing with it. They’ve managed to modernize the franchise without having Halo lose its identity among the sea of “me too” hero shooter junk and call of duty clones, and the game despite its new additions and mechanics very much still feels like Halo.

I look forward to the final game.

Maybe I’m just old. But it’s too fast for Halo.

It is a bit fast for a Halo game.
The TTK is def alot faster than I would expect from a Halo game, the game doesnt require combo'ing anywhere near as much as say Halo 3 or Halo 2.
(Once PvP is in we'll see if thats still true)

Itll take some time to get used to and of course they could still tweak it before final release.
But def much more excited for the multiplayer than I was before testing it out, was fully in for Campaign.

Unfortunately I usually only play one MP shooter at a time because of muscle memory.
And Battlefield 2042 has got my holiday money so I can play with that one broken gun/mechanic you know DICE has included and will patch out by February.

But ill def be looking forward to the Campaign and whatever the evolved Warzone mode is.

The odst bots are fkn savage. I'm still struggling with the controller tbh. I néed to find that sens config that works for me. I could see me playing this though as my MP shooter, with bf2042

I’m still enjoying it, but I do hope they make some adjustments to TTK if not speed over all.

they could actually elegantly combine side thrusts and thrust jump into a single button... basically, if you press jump in the air while letting go of the left stick you thrust upwards, and if you push to any side you do a thrust towards that direction.

would eliminate the need for slide as well (which is basically Infinites thrusting), therefore the need for sprint... and it would eliminate the need to clamber
I would like thrusters as well but that ship has already sailed. All maps have been balanced with clamber and slide.

the thrusters I proposed here would literally mimic the function of both tho, so if they would implement this exactly as described it would fit with the current map design perfectly.

but of course they won't do that, that wouldn't be cod enough

I know this game is still a wip but dam if the graphics leave much to be desired, they better really nail gameplay otherwise they are swimming in a pool full of sharks first person shooter-wise, i suppose as long as they appease there diehard fans of the series thats all that matters… but i just dont think they will attract many new fans from some of the early footage ive seen.

I didn't get in the alpha/beta/whatever - is it bad, okay, good? I need to know if I can take the piss out of 343i still or not urgently!

The people saying Halo should play like Quake lol. How did suggestions that stupid go through this thread unnoticed.

Halo is Halo, we want it to feel like Halo. Go play Quake somewhere else.

Issues with this game is currently that the ttk is a bit too low and the speed is too fast, because Halo is a game where weapon combos are meant to mean something.

In this game currently I haven't seen a single person bother with the Plasma Pistol, because its completely useless the way they've made it.

The speed is so atm high plasma weapons basically have to be hitscan or have tracking projectiles, which is not Halo to me. There's no leading shots, no combining plasma for shield and bullet for finishing off etc.

Have they confirmed a 2021 release or is it still up in the air? I would love for this to be my holiday game.

If my experience with betas is anything to go by, take a list of all the weapons and list them from best to worse.

Now flip them: cause that's how the game will launch.
Just feels like a weapon that lower skilled players won't be good with. And that's why I love it.

I played for about 45 mins. Feels very much like Halo 4 DLC to me. The graphics were ok at best.

Of all the ignorant and stupid takes. This one is the best I've seen. Bravo sir.

I'm impressed with the foundations of the game so far. Really good sanbox, love how balanced sprint is, love how sniping isn't too easy. Aim assist in general seems toned down for controller which is great as it should add a skill gap. The maps don't seem amazing so far (haven't got on a bazaar yet). I fucking love that they have taken the comp motion sensor from H5 and made it default. Original radar has always been completely busted and that change alone will make the more casual playlists actually fun and playable for me.

Agree with this. I was worried it was op at first but it's not easy finishing the oneshot with it. Quite well balanced and BR overall is still the best for consistency at mid range, which is how it should be.

It's clear a lot of love and thought has been put into this halo from a balance perspective. Compare it to launch H4 and H5 and it's lightyears better.
