The sad state of PC gaming(according to Tech Of Tomorrow)

RTX 3070 is better than RTX 3080?
If you look at the averages, they are about equal. That's because of the 1080p resolution, but when you go above, the 3080 performs much better.

We can tell who actually watched the video.
I've debunked each and every argument from that video in my first post and I still want these 13 minutes of my life back for even watching that dreck.

That channel is a long time Pro PC Enthusiasts channel.
And yet out of all the videos that you could have posted from that crappy channel, you chose the salty one. We all know why...

Poster I quoted basically said 3080 was more than enough and future ready.
I don't agree and gave CP2077 as a example.
It's not the only modern PC game that has to run in fake 4K either.
As demonstrated above, consoles don't perform much better. You chose that example, so don't fake out now. I've posted benchmarks, you on the other hand got nothing but speculation. Do you really think your console will outperform a 3080 once they put a "ps5" sticker on the game box? Unless the hardware of your console miraculously changes overnight, that's not gonna happen.

Your new console is not gonna run that game in real 4k max details with RT either, that's because modern games are designed to scale with future hardware. I've shown you that Cyberpunk 2077 is perfectly playable on medium settings even on older hardware. That's because modern games scale wonderfully and can fit a wide range of hardware performance.

You nonstop PCMR troll consoles get out of here with the bs man.
Do you also buy a decent car and then complain that it is too slow to race formula 1 tracks? Because that is exactly what you're doing in relation to gaming hardware, only to sh*t on PC gamers and to wage your silly console war.

It is a sad state of affairs, the two biggest things pc had going for it was being able to upgrade and having cutting edge hardware.
Since you can't buy anything both are taken away, at least for most people.

Wtf?

First of all, those are not the biggest things PC has going for it.

If it were so, most PC gamers would have stopped long ago as that was always more expensive than buying a next-gen console to "upgrade".
Even in times when stuff was readily available, maybe 1-2% of gamers actually had cutting edge machines. Adaption in the PC gaming sphere is much, much slower and less important than you seem to think.
Instead, PC gaming is growing continually, neither "killed" by consoles nor mobile as proclaimed every now and again.

The current hardware situation is a fluke of two years maybe, due to several reasons causing a shortage. It sucks, sure, but it's not like only PC is affected.
Also, it mostly just affects GPUs, which is not the only thing you want to upgrade every now and again.

What PC has going for it are several things in addition to being able to upgrade:
  • Nothing has a larger library of games
  • Full compatibility of every single game ever released for PC (with some exceptions like online games with their servers shut down, relying on odd hardware, etc.)
  • Extremely high compatibility with most games ever released for OTHER platforms (I don't need a PS2 to play PS2 games... PS3 emulation is in great state, PS4 emulation looks promising too already)
  • Tons of games that never were or will be on consoles
  • Not just a device for gaming and media consumption to begin with
  • Not locked in to a specific OS, or a single OS (I dual boot, for example)
  • Highly customizable in every single regard
  • Games are WAY cheaper (to begin with & more sales & more competing storefronts vs ONE per console)
  • Fiddling around with hardware and software is in itself fun (to some), including mods
And that was just off the top of my head.

I'd say if ease of getting into, ease of setup and playing the latest AAA are the only things someone really cares about, they are better off with a console.
But if you play A LOT and/or are interested in hardware and software and/or just want to "go deeper" into gaming, PC is the way to go. It's an enthusiast thing, whereas consoles are simply more casual (NOT talking about the games here, but the hardware & software itself - this is not a diss, just factual).
If you are in it just for the graphics whoring, consoles give a better and more immediate bang for the buck, but PCs will always ultimately be able to beat any concurrent console.

There's nothing wrong with consoles, I got into gaming too with consoles (Gameboy & SNES). But at some point, the limited realm of consoles just wasn't enough anymore to satisfy my interest.
Plus, I really don't care about most console exclusives to begin with. I'm sure they are great games, but there so many of those on PC already I simply don't need those the moment they come out.

I would give my left nut to never, ever have to read another long, cliched list of the same PC gaming bulletpoints that gets posted in every PC vs console gaming thread ever. Jesus christ, give it a fucking rest. You haven't said a single thing here that anyone who has ever been on a gaming forum in the last 20 years hasn't heard 3 million times. It's just so fucking boring to have to read over and over again, as though you are smugly delivering wondrous and never-before-heard insights.

Maybe these lists will stop once the "PC is doomed" threads stop. My guess is both will never stop :messenger_beaming:

As long as people post BS like the stuff I was replying to, people like me will respond with all the reasons why they are wrong.

Sorry to hurt your sensibilities by not making up new facts you didn't know about yet and only using points that I fully agree with you should be common knowledge.

You didn't hurt me. You bored me. Because you are a boring cliche spewing the same arguments that you read on the internet, thinking it makes you knowledgeable and wise. Go play some games or something.

It's hard to get any sort of technology these days, whether it's a Video Card, PS5 or Xbox Series X, even on my way to and from Mexico the airlines can't give everyone a set of headphones on planes and snacks were limited. Then last night the Burger King next to my apartment ran out of food. COVID is hitting pretty hard and slowing down production. Not only this but it's effecting YOY numbers and forcing companies to produce less product, even for grocery stores.

"Don't correct someone writing BS about gaming, because I know already it's BS" is bit of a weird stance considering you are on a gaming forum.
You know... where people discuss things... sometimes using facts you might already know?

Again, apologies for not packaging my arguments in more interesting prose for you or bringing something new to the table.
Before I next reply to a post with a more lengthy explanation, I will send a draft of my thoughts to you to make sure I exclude anything you might already be aware of.
Wouldn't want to trigger you again. After all, if you are already aware of something, we can surmise everyone else is as well and we're really all here to suit your special needs.

Also, I've not been "reading arguments" on the internet.
I've been gaming for longer than the internet was even a thing (or, well, a wide-spread thing). What I've explained comes from experience, not Wikipedia.

Seriously, the GPU situation makes it near impossible to get into the market for PC gaming, not if you want above consoles performance.

He starts on about gpu's then goes off on a tangent about pc games being incomplete upon release and while he does make a valid point about the games, we can pretty much apply what he's trying to say about console games aswell as pc across the board it's a problem with the gaming industry as a whole not just exclusive to pc gaming, you could also argue that there's a shortage of next gen consoles aswell everyone's in the same boat it's seems .
No, you can see how Cyberpunk 2077 was perfect day one on consoles while the PC version, well we are not going to derail this thread by talking about the state of the PC version.

this post highlights (as we all know) many of the great strengths of pc gaming. i've ran across too many of these benefits to list, but here's a recent one: i wanted to play the original Star Control II a couple of months ago. i found it to be discontinued, but a fan site had made a free version of it for pc (Ur-Quan Masters). cool! then, i found out there was a more modern re-boot of this game, found it for 8 bucks, bough it and enjoyed the hell out of it. very cool! it's the flexibility of the platform that makes things like this possible, there are warts to be sure but if you work through them it really is a great gaming experience.

As somebody who has tried both... Well I was able to get a PS5 within a bit less than 3 weeks AT RETAIL PRICE. I have been trying to get a 37/800+ or 67/800+ GPU for months, joining fishy discords, etc. to no avail.

A lot of games I've played on PC this year wouldn't have been there 10 years ago. Persona 5 Strikers. Nier Replicant, Yakuza Like a Dragon. I was able to play them at 1440p 60fps with an Xbox Controller, while 10 years ago I'd have played them at whaever my console gave me.

I'm a console gamer first at foremost. I love my Switch, I bought a PS5 knowing fully well that it would go underutilized for monhs. But this gen I ruminated going PC-only for the first time. I didn't do it, but for the first time it was a reasonable option.

So I think the PC market is healthier than ever.

Well... PC gamers typically have to do that to debunk the myths of PC gaming by Sony, sorry console fanboys that are straight out of 1997.

Hours installing drivers
Comfy couch
PTSD from gaming on PC since I code all day at work (everyone is a programmer with SLI 3090s on these forums but prefers to relax playing consoles)
3k USD for a decent gaming PC (myth from WAY before the pandemic)
Piracy, no one buys games on pc
Emulation is piracy
Pc only has indie games, strategy and simulators
I don't like playing with K&M

That's gbp and that's fiction prices lol.v this pc is more expensive.
And yes. By good pc, I mean better than a console. If it would be the same, then just get the console.
Even if you could get parts for those prices, you act like 1300 gbp is not much
That's $1893, nowhere near your 5k. And no it's not fiction prices because that's the price he paid for the PC sitting in his bedroom. No idea why you're struggling with this. And that rig will provide better performance than the next gen consoles.

Your friend must have more money than sense if he paid $4,000 for a PC, especially one with just a 3080 inside. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

The fact that this things needs to be brought every time a "dirty peasant level" post/thread pops is the real sad state of gaming.

It is not impossible to get a pc at MSRP nowadays but it's highly unlikely.
Here is mine: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/6jXG4d
1500 usd.
Not including RGB, headphones/speakers or TV/Monitor since these are optional. Mouse and keyboard you might get cheaper of course.
Silent Wings 3 are also not needed. The supplied Phanteks fans are... ok
But no water cooling, old generation of Ryzen, medium range memory only 16gb, no pci-e 4.0 drives. It's not all out bonkers build.
At msrp, that is 2200 usd build. But I paid this much in euro(because europe is fucked), so close to 2700usd.
Add additional 100usd for rgb, 100usd for headphones (I have sony pulse 3d so these multitask for ps5 too) and 100 for some accessories like a cable here and there, mousepad etc. That's 3000usd.

Now, I am not sure if pcpartpicker shows current prices or msrp but You can add another 700 if You really want to get 3080. That's 3700usd.
It always look cheaper when you start building. By the time You finish, You don't want to cheap out. You want your rig to be nice and shiny and not 2700usd pile of compromises and let downs.
I am still not happy I've opted out of 4.0 drives and custom PSU cables. The rgb is also extremely basic but I like it this way. Some savings I made went for ps5 and oled of course after selling quest1 etc etc.

So that's 3700usd if no other components are inflated. Then You need a desk, a chair and a monitor/tv (yes, to use with console also probably).

I built this three weeks ago:
1 x MSI MPG Z490 GAMING PLUS, socket 1200 motherboard
(Item No. 1635163, 1 Piece = € 164.90) € 164,90
1 x Corsair 16 GB DDR4-3200 Kit RAM
(Item No. 1713317, 1 Piece = € 126.90) € 126,90
1 x Samsung 970 EVO, 1 TB SSD
(Art-nr. 1449411, 1 Stuks = € 129,90) € 129,90
1 x Fractal Design Vector RS Tempered Glass tower-case
(Art-nr. 1562195, 1 Stuks = € 179,90) € 179,90
1 x Scythe Mugen 5 PCGH cpu cooler
(Art. No. 1341916, 1 piece = € 54.90) € 54,90
1 x Intel® Core i9-10900K, 3,7 GHz (5,3 GHz Turbo boost) socket 1200 processor
(Art-nr. 1612199, 1 Stuks = € 479,00) € 479,00
1 x Corsair RM850, 850 Watt power supply
(Art. No. 1547377, 1 piece = € 124.99) € 124,99
1 x Shipping costs for collection package services
(1 piece = € 4.95) € 4,95
Total price € 1.265,44
add a 3070 or 6700xt for the bs price of ~€1k and you're at $2.7k. Not 3k-5k.

If you think that isn't a "good pc", then you're living in the twilight zone.

I know it's not impossible, my friend bought it literally the other day 🤦.

Nobody needs a 3080. It's not prerequisite for a 'good PC'. In fact a 3070 comfortably outperforms the next-gen consoles.

You spent $100 on RGB - lol are you 15?
$100 for headphones - so now we're chucking in all accessories are we. How about a 5.1 speaker setup while we're at it?
$100 for some random cable and a mouse. Luckily in my friend's case he already had a mouse, and any monitor he buys will come with the HDMI/DisplayPort cable needed. And he would never be foolish enough to spend more than a few quid on a cable.
A fucking desk and chair? How about including the price a crib to house the PC in the first place 😁.

Like I've shown, sub-$2,000 gets you a very good PC. A good 1440p monitor can be had for a few hundred - or you could just use your TV.

A keyboard and mouse really don't need to cost much at all.

$3k is for enthusiast levels of gaming. $5k is either pie-in-the-sky stuff, or adding the cost of a whole host things outside of the rig itself.

Dude I am just rounding things up. All in all a pc setup is expensive as fuck.
5k now is was 3k was few years later.
3080 is not needed but as I've said - it is 100% loaded at 4k in newer games. And 4k is nowadays normal resolution like 1080p was few years ago.
My pc was 2700 usd as I've said (without headphones etc). as msrp. Friend paid close to 4k due to scalper gpu and a bit better components.
For pure 2k usd you can safely go with 3070, b450 motherboard etc. Sure, I did not liked that compromise though.
RGB is fine though. Some led strip in the pc is great. Nothing wrong with that :D

When did this happen? Steam's stats show UHD is nowhere near used a lot:
cjoxDrX.png

1080p dominates, then it's 1440p way down the line; even 900p is used more than UHD.
1080p took some time to get going too. I am on 4k for almost 3 years now myself

ok then, lets play a game in that case. I'll give you 3 games and i'll ask you to present me an AAA equivalent than can do the same stuff they do with similar or better level of complexity/quality:

1st contestant:

Important observations: i'm asking for dynamic building fire/arson/smoke simulation. Don't come here showing a game with a bunch of scripted fire/destruction like Battlefield or ARMA3, or some game where molotovs burn some grass.

2nd contestant:

Important observations: Again, don't come here with some GTA game with a city, i want something player built and functional

3rd contestant:

Important observations: I want dynamic battles, aka fully player and AI controlled. No scripted scenario bullshit. And before you bring a RTS game, keep in mind Bannerlord is a game where you personally control a character, AKA its developed to be close and personal and looks the part. If you bring an RTS it needs to be like that too.

Why don't you just say, "Valheim rocks bro!"

IntentionalPun

Ask me about my wife's perfect butthole
Meh.. just lower settings...

And play ant number of the 10s of thousands of solid games that don't have major crash issues.

Enjoy yourselves.

4k is normal resolution for gaming today? I'm pretty sure someone posted a chart showing the percentage of gamers playing at 4k is very small. Most people play at 1080p, less at 1440p. And please bear in mind that very little console gaming is at native 4k, it's all upscaled.

The whole point of this was to make it clear that you're talking about having all the bells and whistles - and that simply isn't necessary for PC gaming.

You simply don't need to spend $3k -$5k for a good gaming PC in 2021. Good for you and your friend on buying those components, but that was a choice, certainly not a necessity for high-end AAA gaming.

For me it's either good/best or a console... so I have both.
But there is little point spending more for pc than a console and having to play at worse settings.
I cannot imagine not playing at 4k or 4k with quality DLSS. 1080p especially looks like shit nowadays.
But then again - I have 48" oled on my desk..... so I do need 3080. I did had 27" 4k ips for 2 years before that and it was a bit questionable but I always preferred IQ over refresh rate.
THIS IS HIGH END GAMING. 3080 is necessary for high end gaming. It is 100% used. Hellblade maxed 4k does about 80fps. It is a good spot for 4k60.. not always quite enough for 4k120. Good luck doing that high end gaming on 1070 or 2070.
And IMO, ps5/xbox are currently comparable to high end gaming. Just closer to 60 fps rather than 120 of course.

So we went from "good pc" to what's needed for "high end"?
You need to stop making up definitions as you go man, it's textbook goalpost moving.
And You need to stop defending. The prices are terrible. There is no way around it. 3080 is quite high end. There is still 3090 and 6900xt (ugh) and better cpus.
Good PC I would figure out would be 2070+ nowadays. I had 2070. It is good enough for 4k60 most of times. And I sold it used for 400usd... No it's more expensive.,.
So "good" pc is still around 2k and it's barely better than current consoles... but it's not worse for sure

Defend what? That a good pc isn't anywhere near 3k-5k? Because that doesn't need defending, that's just the truth.

What happened to 3k-5k?
Dude fuck off and stop pulling my tongue. Leave it. Jesus Christ... PC'S ARE EXPENSIVE. why are we even talking about this.
For me, good pc is 3-5k nowadays BUT OK - I guess for most people, 2070/3060 is enough... But still fucked with current gpu prices

I said you don't need it for anything.
Nobody needs 4k or DLSS. 1080p is just fine, the rest is pretty superfluous. And I say that as someone who unfortunately bought into the hype and got a 4k monitor - which now is my secondary monitor as most games I have an interest in really don't deal well with 4k resolution (the graphics are usually fine, but the UI sometimes becomes unreadable or otherwise messed up).

Maybe you want 4k and to always be at the edge of whatever is technically possible, but you certainly don't need it.
Anyway, in that case, almost no piece of hardware will ever last you for very long.
Nobody NEEDS anything new game hardware/software wise but WE ALL buy new stuff.
If I make a new build I NEED TRUE 4K/60+ fps.
I don't play on Monitors I play on large non IPS(crap) screens.
Maybe you don't need it but speak for yourself.

U can have great experiences but doesn't mean its better then what it was. That's factually untrue. Even if u liked the games better at the time. It was still a technical shitfest and far less software available then we have today.

3080 is enough for this generation by far. because its atleast 2x faster then what the PS4 has, its basically a 970+ or higher in the same time frame as the PS4 released ( not sure how the 3080 actually weights up against the PS5 gpu didn't pay much attention towards it but i assume its 2x the performance ). The card will play every game that hits the PS5 without problems.

And about max settings, i already explained in my last reaction why it means nothing. Max settings are builded for future hardware it can go as high as anybody wants it to go and modders will push it further then that. What a 3090 does at 4k max settings on PC isn't much relevant in comparison.
The gap between consoles and gaming builds was HUGE then.
Did it have technical issues? sure(win 95 a critical error has occurred) but for the most part if you knew what you were doing you were ok.

For my wants a 3090 isn't enough for now/this generation to start a new build.
Max/Ultra settings means something to me.
The fact that a 3090 has to fake 4K via DLSS is a sad state of PC gaming.

yeah none of gpus are sadly future proof nowadays. Since 4k is IMO inevitable future and ray tracing also... although on don't go well with another so maybe 1440p is here to stay for a bit longer
