Live from NeoGAF, it's Friday Night!
You guys who says biome 6 isn't too bad are crazy. I have a bitch of a time there.
Depending on your weapon of choice most enemies can be shot down from far away in biome 6.
It is just that one new enemy type that kept messing me up. The one that swims around.
I unlocked a new consumable that freezes most enemies for a short time in the area. Helped a lot!

The worst thing in this biome are the projectiles that cause malfunctions.
Especially when you have parasites that amplify malfunctions although you've avoided malignant collectables in previous biomes.

Hyperion is down. I think the moments leading up to this boss, and the boss itself, with the organ music, is one of the most powerful boss moments I've seen in video games. Absolutely breath taking.
Her reaction too. Her voice. You can hear it in her voice performance. She did a good job

How far are you in?

The more you unlock and progress the better it gets. The malignant objects are supposed to be a risk and reward mechanik if it is that what you mean with "crappy".
In my opinion the RNG aspect is really well balanced. Once you get used to enemy behaviour it isn't all that difficult anymore.

I can just suggest you to keep playing but if you aren't having any fun than sure, take a break.
3rd biome. I'm not a fan of the risk/reward aspect of this game. I get that they are trying to innovate but I am just not a fan, and it significantly detracts from the "fun" of this game. The game is fine in its shooting, movement, enemies. It's not unfairly hard. But it feels like a complete waste of time when everything is malignant. I just ignore it, but that means that there is very loot to grab which kind of defeats why I play this type of game. It makes for a pretty unfulfilling gameplay loop. It's not bad by any stretch, but I also don't think it's amazingly good either

Some of the enemies in this game have insane tracking. Almost to a fault. Those tentacle beasts jump attack can home in on me from across the screen. I also question the hit boxes sometimes. Either they are broken or the AOE is far more reaching than it looks.

And those severed mini bosses are probably the most pain in the ass enemies in the game. Very frustrating when they start teleporting and then slash you with their sword. Extremely difficult to avoid. Got wrecked by one of those guarding a key in biome 5.

Game is awesome, but damn, need to vent. Had a couple of bad runs. Time to take a break again. It's so intense that after a few hours I'm exhausted.

I'm too stuck with those, i am relatively noob so what weapon, strategy, any tip or item that will help is highly appreciated !
Get a better gun. holloseeker shreds them and should have some perks that hit other enemies.

Stock up on protection. You are going to get hit so might as well tank those hits. Use the first two worlds to stock up on artifacts and parasite that increase your protection.

Just finished a post game run through biomes 1-3. I wrecked everything in my path. Still, those pesky flying drones gave me a hard time on biome 3.

I didn’t come across any sun shards though 🤔

Hah, Returnal is scary? Yeah, maybe the overhanging dread of setting foot in a rocket launcher drone area at any minute in Biome 3
That’s what people are saying. Returnal creates more fear and dread because of the atmosphere and gameplay than Resident Evil. I haven’t played either but I thought it was an interesting take.

People are saying returnal is scarier than RE8.... not sure if that is praise for returnal or a negative for the new Resident Evil.

The scary part is death when you know you're in the middle of a good run with a strong loadout, not the game itself.

The atmosphere can be a bit creepy and mysterious at times but that's about it.

You need to have seen all the House sequences in Biomes 1 and 4. I did a few runs through Biome 1 wasting my time before I figured this out lol.

Discussing about a game takes a couple of minutes. That is nothing compared to what amount of time is wasted on a product that makes you play for 3 hours straight and then throws that time and progress away from you.

Gaming is largely a nonessential use of time that could be better spent on something productive - coming to a gaming forum to complain about the time used for gaming is .... stupid.

People here like to game - that’s their hobby. If you’re worried about your time good for you, don’t try to lecture others about their time and how it’s spent.

Had a great run, almost 300% integrity, a looot of protection and a maxed out weapon proficency and got to Nemesis second phase. The Hollowseeker i picked up did great before Nemesis and had Waves, Shrapnel and Retarget, turned out to be utterly useless for DPS on Nemesis.

A little happy that I made it through the 3rd biome but, by god I would’ve wanted a better weapon trait in the boss fight. Would’ve been absolutely perfect with Serrated projectiles instead of Retarget. Sometimes the RNG really fucks you bigtime in this game.

Just finished the game. How a game could possibly be so amazing and so frustrating is hard for me to comprehend. I hope they continue the series and polish up some of the rough edges.

- give me some sort of save system to break up the length of runs

- let me re-roll weapon perks for obolites or ether. So demoralizing to level up to level 3 on really good perks only to discover the same gun after a death with crap perks or level 1 versions of the perks I had been enjoying

- give me more obolites. If I can clear an entire biome out and collect every obolite that was dropped, I should be able to buy nearly everything I’d like to

- health packs should always heal first and, if you have full health, stock an expansion slot.

- the volume of malignant health in the game is stupid (especially toward the end of the game)

Love this game overall, a few tweaks and it would be perfect. The gameplay is whiskey, butter, and bacon.

Bobby Krlic has said on interviews that the album version of the game music would be recomposed for release purposes, making the OST more player friendly and creating a narrative for the album. There are a lot of tracks missing from the iTunes album but it's intentional. You can't go more AAA than hiring this guy who has worked with Bjork and Atticus Ross as a producer and did the soundtrack for Midsommar.

Short bio:

Bobby Krlic (born 1985),[1] known by his stage name The Haxan Cloak, is a British composer, artist, music producer and musician. Over the past decade, Bobby Krlic has created music under The Haxan Cloak, releasing two full-length albums (2011’s The Haxan Cloak and 2013’s Excavation).[2][3] As a producer, Krlic has worked with artists including Björk,[4] Father John Misty,[5] Khalid,[6] Troye Sivan,[7] Goldfrapp,[8]serpentwithfeet,[9] The Body,[10] and noise-rock band HEALTH.[11] As a composer, Bobby’s credits include Midsommar[12] directed by Ari Aster, Michael Mann’s Blackhat (in collaboration with Oscar-winning composer Atticus Ross),[13] Rockstar Games’ Red Dead Redemption 2 (in collaboration with Swans)[14] and major network television shows Snowpiercer, Angel of Darkness (TNT)[15] and Reprisal (Hulu).[16]

Awesome execution!

It really wonders me why it took you three tries after i saw this.
First attempt i began the boss fight with just 40% health with no health upgrades. The second attempt I made the mistake of accidentally swapping a weapon which i didn’t intend to. The third attempt corrected these errors and voila. Also now I’m stuck in biome 5, so damn hard

So that's why. :messenger_grinning:

Biome 5 also took me the longest. In the end it was about getting used to enemy behaviour more than anything else.

1 hour and 45 minute run in Biome 5, about to grab the last Nadal key to access the final biome, used SO much ether for the resurrection chamber aswell as redeeming some for an astronaut, and the game crashes......

And to make it even better, my PS5 is now stuck in a eternal loop (the irony hurts too much) closing the game..

I am officially done with Returnal till they patch this game or include an emergency save function as this shit isn't on.

Thats amazing. I finished the game (well act 1 & 2) without a single crash. And i relied on rest mode overnight twice.
i guess im really really lucky.

I just cleared biome 3, no wonder some people feel this game is easy, it's all depends on RNG. There are some really OP builds but sometimes no matter how much you grind, you just can't get what you want.
If you're stuck at biome 3 like me, try to fully cleared 1st and 2nd biome. In 1st biome, DON'T PICK UP THE RESIN unless you've full hp, if you're not full hp, teleport back to your ship to rest. You can rest multiple times ( after rest, go out of the ship and go to next area then come back to ship to rest again). Buy 25% integrity in 1st and 2nd biome. My HP before the 3rd boss is 300% by doing this.
Try to find protection artifacts or parasites - if the negative effects is tolerable. Get weapons with the bonus Dmg stats, whenever you can.
My stats before clearing 3rd biome,
Hp 300%
Weapon: carbine with 5 or 6 bonus dmg stats
Dmg: 40%
Protection: 20%
If you see flying robots, run back and quickly find cover. If you see crawling robots, find the higher place or run, when they die don't forget to jump.
If you die, just keep trying, you might get lucky next time.
Happy Returnaling.

No good RNG outcome will save you, if you don't have the skill to beat the game!
I mean you need skill of course, but the RNG makes it easier. I am by no means a very good player, i can't get pass that stage no matter how much i tried. But the lady luck blessed me with Good RNG for that run, that's how i cleared that stage.
That's all there is to it.

It plays a huge role, no question. But more for players with average or good skills. I'm just saying.

Finally saw the 5th house scene and unlocked the 6 artifacts for the secret finale, already finded 2 of them.

Selene literally gibber jabbering in 95% of the audio logs you find is kinda funny at this point...

And that's why i'm still with only the day one patch installer and the console offline.

Praying for you dude.

Same here. I'm keeping it that way until I do a couple more playthroughs and maybe go for platinum. Then I want to play around with the dev cheats and do a run with whatever weapons I choose. Once we get a stable update and the corpses are back, I'll go ahead and update.

The gameplay, audio, and atmosphere are 11/10. Despite some of the balancing/RNG issues, I love what the overall package. If the game weren't so solid in those areas, I probably would have dropped it before completion.

Which version are you running?
The last one. It's strange. It didn't corrupt the save when I used the pull backed version and I thought everything was fine. I even played the game yesterday night and all good. The game wasn't updated overnight or anything. It's some retroactive bug on my file. It was destined to disappear.

MALIGNANT SAVE. Malfunction Probability: Extremely Likely.

I'll admit I lost my appetite for the game for now. I'll let it boil for some days while it's being patched up.

But you did play the version 1.003.003 which caused some problems?

This gives me hope since i didn't played this version.

Did you try to exchange the save file through an older one?
Have you used the power of the cloud? :messenger_winking:
Yeap, cloud save was replaced with empty save. No escape. I now wish we could have different file versions of saves in the cloud. At least 3 or something.

game breaking (in a good way) combo...

Go full protection, suit regenerating automatically when low health and the gun with voidbeam. Makes any enemy or boss a walk in the park. No need to even heal

You're welcome :p
