DF: Returnal: Housemarque Pushes PlayStation 5 HARD - With Spectacular Results

Why would anyone buy this 6/10 low budget 1080p indie game with shooting mechanics for kiddies at launch knowing it will be at $15 tops within a month, when there are hundreds maybe even thousands of better games already released, that they haven't played yet.
Check the metacritic and opencritic scores, you smooth-brained chimp. It's a stellar game. Who gives a shit about the internal res when the final IQ is all that matters? Piss off with this disruptive bait.

This game is making people have the most ridiculous meltdowns ever.

What the hell is going on?
It's the resolution, I would say. Also the draught of new releases, thankfully that is getting better.

So what the hell has happened between this thread:

And now?

Suddenly people aren't interested in reconstruction techniques that allow for great graphics with very little downside (unless you use a magnifying glass) at 60fps? I'd be the first to tell you I love DLSS and turn that shit on in every game it's available. Why wouldn't you? I don't care what the rendering resolution is all that matters is the quality of the final output.

Picked up my copy yesterday and played most of last night and about 3 hours this morning. Game is SO good! I’ve always loved Housemarque so it was never going to be a question of wether the game was good or not, but it’s so much better than expected. And it’s addictive too! Looks spectacular and controls supremely well. I’m all in on this bad boy.

The game is a looker, regardless of whatever the resolution is; I honestly couldn’t give a fuck. I can’t remember a game that has provided so much satisfaction in obliterating aliens. It’s majestic at times. It’s an absolute riot and I have not once thought that it looked anything less than spectacular. And the daily challenges are an unexpected treat, bringing the gameplay back to its arcade roots, trying to get a high score. And don’t even get me started on the haptics…. If 4K is your idea of next gen, then I don’t know what to say.

Are you really saying that consoles provides some magic to games be more creative/innovative while PC forbid that? Freaking shooters with a crosshair on screen like Returnal itself were created on freaking pc!!!

And not any other advantages other than pushing pixels? What about pushing more frames? Pushing graphic mods to push even move the RTX3090 to its knees? Push the best controller types for every genre? Pushing emulation that incompetent consoles are not?
You fucking numb nuts, build me a PC with 400$ and let's see what's incompetent.

No one is denying the PC any acomplishment, but as of late gaming that pushes inovation as well as graphics have stagnated to a handful, when there should be a majority on PC. I was hoping for Cyberpunk to be that kickstart but I was wrong.

Consoles tend to do a pretty decent job for the price. I just don't get the reason you people are here putting down hardware that plays very decent games at a very decent budget.

Yeah well people who believe that AMD delivers, are naive at very best... And yeah I get your point.

I personally would prefer to push the hardware with better AI, awesome particles, tons of stuff on screen, and other bells and whistles rather than flex my "resolution boner", particularly when we have upscaling tech that looks great...

That having been said we are SIX MONTHS into a new console generation folks...things will improve and the systems will be better optimized...

I repeat (yet again) we haven't come close to seeing what either console can do yet...

After you present me a 400$ console that can do everything or more for gaming than a pc can. PC is far from being only power. I still have hope that finally some day fucking numb nuts like you will finally understand that well.

I think they will deliver something ok as a baseline but the console manufacturers will want to apply their own custom techniques on top to clean it up a bit. Wont be anywhere near as good as DLSS though.
Yeah, I am still waiting for that mythical slide from hotchips which sates some ML capabilities for xbox...

Not a visual showcase, Jesus Christ on a bike, you must need you eyes checking. This looks incredible. Do you have working eyes or did you just listen to the gameplay and imagine?

Such a dumb, incorrect comment. Not every game will push such particles etc. Also each game and engine is different and its about the image at the end.
Eyes are ok but with my glasses are great. I think it looks great, just not a visual showcase. You quoted me saying it looks super fun with great looking gameplay.
Holy fuck if you ain't fellating, you hating.

And people seem to have forgotten this is a small arcade studio’s literal first attempt at a AAA title. They went from resogun and nex machina to this. Growing pains were to be expected, and I’m glad they didn’t affect the actual quality of the game

For real. 99% of all videogames is shooting at bad guys with a cool background behind them. I really am sick of the gameplay complaints. This is great. This game looks incredible and is a verifiable showcase for the new hardware.

Shitty framerate and laughable resolution is a bit disappointing. Happy now.

It's a simple action game / PS5 native / and failed smoothly in two basic parameters.
Err... *sees post history*

You know I've never ignored anyone but you're the first one to go there. See ya, kid.

Personally, because it's a useful metric to try to gauge system performance from, and since we still know almost nothing about what the next gen systems are really capable of, I care way more about that right now than how any one game in particular looks.

So if I see Returnal's graphics and think, well they're not mindblowing, but still a decent upgrade, then I'm gonna attempt to contextualize that information by looking at frame rate and resolution. That will tell me a bit about whether I should expect more or less or roughly the same from upcoming titles.

So in this case I'm looking for data that will reassure me that while this isn't a generational leap, that's only cos frame rate is x and resolution is y, and that as long as those factors are optimised in other games I'm still gonna get my lovely mindblowing next gen graphics.

Only, in this case, it's the reverse. So that's disappointing. Of course, it would be much more disappointing if we hadn't just seen absolutely staggering results from Ratchet in the demo last night. So I'm trying to just put it down to Housemarque being new to this and some poor design decisions.

there’s no poor design decisions. The game looks great.

using metrics like that to project future games is a pretty meaningless endeavor

So now 4yrs later after my initial tests and working on several game engine projects, I don't have deep knowledge of graphics programming in hardware? Like are you serious?

Any true developer would know what I'm talking about. The architecture (i.e. CPU/GPU) is still based around x86. Still compiles with x86 instructions.. still has an AMD GPU, etc. SSD is different and it's connections to the VRAM. But that's not the point. You act as if the PS4 is based on some arkane technology and is completely different than PS5's API.

So why are you replying to me then? You absolutely don't know about the PS5 hardware more deeply as you put it.
I give up. Ignore list is it.

HAL-01 HAL-01 All the more reason to beat their chest and complain about things they likely would never had noticed if it weren't pointed out lol

Like just curious was anyone here for the 6th or 7th generations...the launch titles were in no way representative of what the consoles could pull off toward the end...

From the NES to the PS4 each console has proven what it's capable of as the devs get MORE familiar with the hardware/software EVERY SINGLE ONE lol

It's Because of the fraud that playstation 5 fans have become. And the fact that most of you are In denial about your preferred system. So you make up Features And Technical facts that don't exist. When you really should be telling Sony to stop giving us sloppy seconds. But you prefer not to and at the same time say how bad Your competitors hardware is, that's why I'm on your case......
Now you will write back and say I never said that it was?

I'm also waiting on the posts saying DF is in MS pocket and how they don't have technical knowledge, or that they're biased against Sony.

If Digital Foundry said the game looks like crap would they be credible? I just believe they are telling us that it looks great because that's the truth.

Because each developer makes different choices. One indie making a game for a system isn't a good indication of what a Naughty Dog dev could be able to do. It's just a silly comparison.
The physical limitations are the same for both. I'm not saying games won't look much better, but you can do that working with the same physical limitations. With just more workers and or more talented workers.

But I don't think that qualification applies here.

This isn't some minor indie game, even if the developer is relatively small.

It's a AAA production chasing high end visual performance. And it's not like I'm trying to construct a model of what ALL other AAA games will therefore look like. It's more like I like to have a kind of baseline in mind for what other games should look like, give or take, and taking various other factors into consideration.

That is basically how it works, in my experience. Each generation seems to have a rough level of visuals you can generally expect, and you can sort of tell, for example, when trailers etc are bullshit. I'm just trying to understand what that level is for the new generation. Unless you think that such a base level will never be established, I don't see what's unreasonable about that.

It's a small team, and it is tailor made for the type of game they want to make - a fast, twitching, arcade game. Returnal looks great, certainly better than the vast majority of the games on the market, and certainly next-gen. But it is a vastly different game than what a team of 300 people whose focus is on Action/Adventure/Storytelling would make.

I’m surprised to see so much criticism over reconstructed resolution. The game looks phenomenal when playing so what else matters?

Digital Foundry touch on just how much is going on with the rain and multidude of particle effects, dust, destructible environments, etc. If native resolution needed to be sacrificed for the overall image then I’m all for it.

All of this running at a mostly stable 60fps. DF specifically called it very, very stable saying it’s about as locked as a console can get. But they did also point out the randomness and unpredictability of roguelikes/lites and their ability to affect performance which I think is important to point out. You can get certain loadouts of enemies and weapons in configurations that can affect performance results.

Heck, I’ve had certain loadouts on numerous occasions playing Binding of Isaac that absolutely tanked the framerate of my PS4 to the point where it was borderline frozen, and that game is not a looker at all.

The overall takeaway from DF’s analysis seems to be Housemarque did an incredible job with Returnal and made the right sacrifices overall to achieve their vision.

how it wasn't stable ? if I remember correctly there werent single fps drop and devs said uncapped runs in middle 40ish and about cu count it as important as clock frequency so don't know why you ignore clock

Additionally they said they are targetting 1440p 60fps by the time it actually releases. People forget the UE5 demo was an EARLY look

The Medium goes below 900p/30fps(with dips)
And it shows. That’s the difference really. Not the number. Returnal looks awesome. I didn’t see anyone call out how HM got Returnal to look this way before DF told them. I mean, use your eyes. DF is praising the method and they’re focusing on the number instead of the eye test. There were about 5 threads about Returnal the last few days, not one mention about it being 1080p base. Even when some doubted 4K claim.

I have it but still haven't tested it.
I will aim to play it tonight and will bump this with my findings.

I am a tuff critics so if it has issues I will post em.
