Returnal Review Thread (PS5)

Yeah I totally agree with you but you aren't going to convince anyone in this thread that anything said that is negative about a PS5 game isn't some sort of conspiracy. Jeff should have known better and you should too.

On topic the game looks interesting but I do wish that there was more positive progression instead losing as much as I read that you do. It looks like a quality title and hopefully it elevates all developers to make fantastic games.
Mate, you are one to talk, you think every anti-MS news is agenda-fuelled for goodness sake. Even when developers are complaining about a certain console on Twitter you think they should be reprimanded and all have agendas:

"If a dev is having problems they should contact MS for assistance not run to Twitter to rage and fuel fanboy wars. I hope that ID guy learned his lesson."

Pot. Kettle. Black comes to mind.

Reading the reviews on different sites is bizarre as the final verdict is often at odds with what they say (Eurogamers review comes to mind here). I feel that this is a game that reviewers desperately want to love hence the gushing praise, but ultimately don't regardless of their verdict, and this is why the reviews don't jive sometimes. I think this is would be an incredibly hard game to review.

I think ultimately this is going to be an extremely niche game which isn't a bad thing. It just is.

One big point on the ResetEra fuckery:

A fan forum is actively censoring members reacting to, and honestly critiquing, a review.

Let that fucking shit sink right in.
It’s very typical in totalitarian ideologies for the scope of “victimizer” to grow and grow and grow until everyone is guilty on some level and then people start killing each other. Obviously ResetEra is a forum run by a bunch of snarky and resentful nerds so it won’t escalate to violence but you can see the trend. They don’t get less totalitarian and echo-chamber-esque, the effect increases. Think this is as far as it will go? Think again.

How dare someone have a life. Fuck you man if you can't sit down for 3 hours straight for each section. What do you think this is 1990 ffs saves take a lot of space on a NES cartridge. Poor design if you go hours between saves in this day and age ffs.
I'm already committing £70 to this, letting the game dictate my schedule is a small price to pay :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Isn't Jeff Grubb the same guy who said Crackdown 3 was better than God of War?

Played some of it already a few hours ago:

- Graphics are really good
- Particle effects are nuts
- 3D sound is great
- Gives me an Alien vibe
- Amazing looking fluid deformation
- The world reacts on your movement like plants, grass, leafs
- No Photomode :( (at this time)

This game looks so much better in motion.

I don't know if he did say that or not, but it sounds reasonable.

Had to google it. I'm just going to leave this here for everyone to......ahem.....enjoy.

When I play God of War, the “quality” is easy to see on the screen. It’s obvious in every frame of animation how much time and effort went into making it look incredible. And yet, I never enjoyed playing it.

The polish in God of War doesn’t do anything for me. And at least some of the love for the game comes from people who are still waiting for their tastes to fully mature. Gaming fans want to recognize God of War as better than Crackdown 3 because it looks like it should be better. One is about a father learning to actually have a relationship with his son. It’s a serious game for big, grownup serious boys! And the other is about a cop who jumps high and collects magical glowing orbs.

Apparently this is a matter of "taste". If you don't like Crackdown 3 then yours needs refining.

I wish I was making this up.

You know @davidjaffe gave some insight a few days ago on one of this shows.

He talked about twisted metal (2 I think but maybe it was 3).

Anyway he said the game cost $850,000 to make and sold 2 million copies at $50 a piece.

Now that’s a return on investment.

Meanwhile games these days are running to hundreds of millions to make, sell maybe 5 to 10 million life - even at $60 the return multiples just aren’t the same.

And there we are $70 games. To be honest I don’t think AAA game development is comfortable or sustainable even at that price point. The cost of producing a flop is so high now.

Jaffe also said many times that returnal cost a lot. I hope these reviews hold up and it’s a big hit for Sony and Housemarque.
Returnal didn't cost Hundreds of millions to make. It's not GTA5 or RDR 2. It's on one platform with a pretty small efficient team. It should easily cover it's cost and then some.

I'm late to this, so this Jeff is getting attacked by Sony hardcore fans because he gave the game 6/10 and he apparently gave The Medium 10/10? Or is there any reason.
I think this Jeff guy is insufferable though, but i think meta scores are getting way way too much priority these days. People in forums always claim that review scores usually dont matter to them, yet everyday i see the complete opposite.

The thing that stuck out at me watching the IGN review, the no save thing is a dealbreaker for me, at least on release. I just don't have hours to kill if the punishment for not grinding enough is too high.
Definitely waiting for user impressions.
I’m with you. The lore and all that stuff looks right up my alley but I don’t have the time I used to to sink hours into a game to get good enough to have fun. I’ve been trying to get into mortal shell and I just can’t. It shits me. Ive come to accept that in my mid thirties, games like Ghost of Tsushima which emphasise exploration and story that I can play at my own style and pace are more my bag than these grindy skill based ones. I want to buy returnal, play it and love it but I feel like I’ll regret it after an hour.

I wonder what his Ratchet and Clank review will be like?

Hopefully he won't be the one writing it. His Returnal review is incredibly lacking. Frankly, it looks like he played through and just jotted down a few random thoughts. He barely gives a synopsis of the game or what the gist of the gameplay is about. He rambles on about visual's "rough edges", his inability to see water, the controller "gimmicks", and then some extremely unhelpful descriptions of character builds being good or bad. It isn't even until the end of the review that he even talks about the "biomes" as if I'm just supposed to know what a "biome" is in Returnal where we also learn he had to fight a boss. His review is horribly short and just not very good. 4/10

I don't think Grubb reviewed The Medium.

Their particles appear to still be voxel based.

Does UE support voxels, or was this something they incorporated themselves? Anyone know?

Grubb's review basically just said "it's too hard for me and I don't like the triggers" even tho he clearly was able to change the controls to something he'd rather use.

Kinda sad that he's focusing on subjective topics instead of doing an objective review. Which is why his is such an outlier.

This thread is proof alone.
Of another Sony banger? True.

You of all people (remembering how you and I shared similar views in a now nuked subsection that shall not be named) should be all over Grubb for the sad attempt at being a "male feminista" m'ladying a they/them/indigenous virtual pet over criticism for another slacktivist styled hit-piece on gaming disguised as a "review."

Or is brand allegiance that much more important? Be honest with me, bruh.

If you're late to this then you had enough time to figure out why he was the topic of conversation throughout the last couple of pages.

And no, it's not even about his review score for returnal anymore.

Returnal in Australia is $108.. It's a buy from me but not at that price. I'm glad looking at the reviews it's a niche game because it means all the filthy casuals will have their physical copies up on Facebook Marketplace within a week or so for $80 or less :messenger_tears_of_joy:

I lost track of all this drama but it's not about the score anymore. He just wants attention like Jim Sterling did before him.

Jeff Grubb is a massive Xbox fan and he said Returnal is better than Halo and Gears of War so at least that's good. A thread should be made about this.

- graphics are insane
- game is rock solid 60 fps
- haptic feedback is incorporated in gameplay literally
- the game is hard and it take some time to understand its mechanics
- expect to die a lot and u must learn from ur mistakes
- the gameplay is fast and fluid and the weapons so far are great to use

imagine putting God of War, one of the best games last gen, in the same sentence with a turd like Crackdown 3

lol this grubb is a clown

i doubt people would care about the 6/10 score if it were from anyone else but we all know this clown's true colors, professional gaming journalist my ass, people should ignore him and don't give him clicks and i hope Sony never send them review copies again
