Returnal Review Thread (PS5)

During his playthrough stream he was being a cynical bitch about everything. Mentioning the whole "Sony template" with the 3rd person camera, bad mouthing the Dual Sense features, and generally being shit at the game honestly, dying way too much.

The problem of course isn't that the game gets a 6. And of course when Playstation magazine gives a Sony game a 10, it's like... yeah ok, sure. But he's not writing for Xbox magazine, so his Arthur Gies mimicry gets called out and justifiably.

Dude is straight up an extension of Xbox PR at this point.

I don't disagree, arthur Gies was hard to read. Guy didn't even deny it. I mean I dont care honestly, but if you want clout, be real and honest on what you like to play. If you prefer the stuff MS has or that ecosystem than just be honest about it.

Why review a game just so you can get clicks regardless if you are wrong or not? Like if rogue games are not your thing wtf are you playing returnal? I dont like rogue likes, but I love Housemarques shooting mechanics in ex-machina, resogun that seeing how the action is, makes me want to play it.

To me if the game is addictive gameplay wise it's enough for me.

Demon's Souls is 92 on Metacritics, won't touch it even for free. Same with Bloodborne. Yet you don't find me in Demon's Souls game shitting on it.

That game would've been fun in early 1990's. By the time I was playing on Sega MegaDrive such games aren't playable.
Really looking forward to seeing how you like Returnal. It sounds like you're in for the "babby's first roguelike" experience...

I was ready for objects being moved about but the entire levels are different. Everytime you play. Now that's fucked me up lol.

You don't, as far as the story elements go. So the idea (of roguelike/lite games in general) is to reveal new story elements on each run. So you will learn and see new story bits, not watch the old bits again and again.

Also, the saving thing isn't that big of a deal. There are teleportation jumps, and once you hit certain checkpoints, you can skip boss fights in previous biomes altogether on your next runs. So they have made it a fair system.
That seems like a good compromise.

Why can't you save current progress in a roguelike?
Due the gameplay loop... you are suppose to restart the game every time... saves breaks that purpose.
Imagine if you save and die and instead to restart use to save to back where you are.

It basically kills the rogue-like mechanics.
The story is told at each restart... so each new run is different from the previous.

haven’t shit on this game either. I’ve said it’s a niche genre and would be great if they dropped in on PSN (becuase the price is high for a rougelike).

By the way, talking to you in a friendly tone but it's inaudible through text. I don't like Rougelike games, same with Resogun, but this game offers much, much more than that.

oh look Jeff Grubb (6/10) ....

I could not comprehend the game's mechanics and failed but once I did I passed a level. ...
At this point, if MS isn't making Jeff Grubb a full employee w/ all benefits, Jeff is doing something wrong.

He complains against the roguelike elements and mechanics (not the game itself) but then deducts Returnal's score and gives it just 6/10. A "journalist" is supposed to be unbiased and see and review things for what they are. He is a joke!

So isn't Demons Souls which is rogue like. Difference is procedual generation and how you save. I could not get into Demons souls but liked Bloodborne. This game looks super addictive so I'm in. I will always pay for Quality. Find me a rogue like with these production values, and fine tuned mechanics, and thoughtful control schemes in how to use the system its on?

Hades is $40, and thats game is a 2d/3d top down style rogue. But it $20 more than the average like something to Dead Cells.

Wait for a sale. Thats the great thing about PS titles PSN sales happen all the time. Ghost of tsushima went on sale for $40 in October/November.

When you load it up I'm sure it says something like you can use rest mode to hold the position in the loop.

When I get a ps5 again, I’ll prob give it a try but really haven’t like any rougelike I have ever played (binding of issac was the longest with a few hrs of play time). Would have to be at a deep discount, bought Souls remake and played it for an hour at full price….

We will see how it does. There's hype, now there's critical success, and if there's commercial success... then the price won't be high for the game.

still crazy how people are still throwing the price as a reason to knock the game

Is it though? $109-$125 AUD here in Australia for returnal

Last generation new release games were commonly $69-$79 AUD at launch.

I am happy to miss all the B grade games at launch at those prices, pick them up later in the bargain bin.

Yeap... that is fair... a sava could allow the gamer to back to the same place breaking the loop.
It could allow to beat the game in a single run where you will basically miss all the gameplay experience and story of rogue-like games.

Maybe if you make a save type that you can only reload if you didn't die... it is something that is doable I believe... but how you do that because you can backup the save and makes it fell like you didn't die.

My eyes were melting when I saw DS remake, but that wasn't enough to pull the trigger. I do think it's a great game, but not for me, same with many other games I don't like. I wish I can tolerate every genre, but it's human nature to have a variety of tastes.

I mean it begs the question, why are you in this thread when you A) don’t have a PS5 and B) don’t like the genre of game?

Same with me, Souls games are just not for me. Returnal unfortunately isnt either. After watching a bunch of reviews I can just tell I'm not going to like the game. Sucks because theres nothing to play right now. Guess I have to wait until R&C

Pre ordered anyway so I am all in either way. Game sounds good though.

I always feel a bit angry at reviewers who mark a game down over really silly things. It just feels very unfair.

It seems to be getting worse and it seems that every big game launch these days has some reviewer ending up making it about them. I just wish they were competent.

Jeff Grub’s review helps drag the score down and tells us that Rogue like game are hard and he does not like hard games and thus 6/10. Well thanks 😂.

Jeff Grubb is a fucking retard, who got some clout because he has inside information on the gaming industry. As a "Journalist" he is a hack like Jez Corden (who btw didn't even finish school). You can't call that a journalist. Giving it a 6/10 would be okay, if he had the right reasoning behind it. Just this one sentence in his article makes me facepalm so hard
In order to beat the game, the player needs to improve their skill. But that is a tedious and laborious process.

That's it, Jeff Grubb would give that a 10/10. :lollipop_tears_of_joy:
You take that back, Isaac is an awesome game, you just need to look past the visuals but there's a really excellent game there.
I know it because I thought the exact same things as you when I first watched a friend play it in IT school.I dismissed it as childish and uninteresting for months because of its appearance...Then I played it, the childish aesthetic is superficial because there's a really dark story in it with references to so many video games, synergies, believe me everybody that has played it has became addicted to it.
I do reckon that I wouldn't pay 60 or 70$ for it but it is probably my most played game (I love roguelikes) and I has my doubts about Returnal ...Then the previews and uncut videos reassured me and it's been preordered.
And I'm really curious as to how the first real AAA roguelike will be but seing how high the reviews are I'm now confident and excited fort a games I was just curious about a week ago.

happy for the team that the game is reviewing well...still crazy how people are still throwing the price as a reason to knock the game..regardless, i got my deluxe version preloaded, lets gooooo!!!

Personally I’m not intentionally knocking the game itself. How long before they are £80 or £90? Gaming isn’t cheap as it is. We got the Days Gone guy yelling if they want a sequel more people should’ve bought the game yet Sony lauded the original games sales the year it came out. We also have publishers still trying to justify loot boxes and shit like that.

Don't know, man. I'm also a person who can't tolerate old games in general, and that feels NES-level.

He has come across as quite unprofessional in both his takes, reviews and predictions, makes me wonder how he ever got the job.

I expected mid 70s-80s, so it looks pretty strong so far. Probably going to wait for a sale or PS+ tho, need to get through more backlog this summer if I can resist other new stuff

It's a legit great game with tons of references to older and newer games and what's interesting about it is the synergies that can make you overpowered or ruin an awesome run (fuck soy milk).
Let me give you an example you can have a run where you shootlittle nails but with barely any damages then come across an item that makes you shoot laser which can be a bad thing since you lose the knockback effect that pushes the ennemy away from you when you shoot it.
But since your previous tears were nails that increase knockback now your laser has knockback and enemies can barely approach you and that happens constantly in the game for better or worse.
It was offered on the ps+ maybe you have it in your library.
Try it and maybe you'll get the the visuals to like the game.
