Just the size of the xbox section compared to that of the PS section let you know all you need to know (it was the opposite during the 360 days here in Canada).
and I should definitely have taken a photo--but I did double and triple check myself, made sure they were not a bunch of old one S etc. nope.
They should have gone all in with the X and maybe follow Sony's route to create a digital only version--people who absolutely want the next-gen and can't find the one with the drive are way more likely to sacrifice only the drive as opposed to the drive + 1/1000th the performance compared to the big boys.
I had seen people commenting to that effect here before, but I figured this must have been flukes... but apparently not, the S is not the "perfect" solution.
I mean, you can rationalize its existence with arguments, weak arguments, but arguments like: it's a perfect little box for gamepass or another gem, I'll get the X for me and the S for the kids (as if that was a setup for most families).
That sounds like creative marketing, but I think the only marketing that would work would be to sell them at the dollar store, or on Aliexpress like all the cheap knock off consoles do.
The Series S is as next-gen as the PS4 with an SSD.

According to ign they are all sold out. And they sell like hot cakes. so probably it was an illusion. In the end series s is MS’s ace console while the series x is just for the hardcore. They will dominate the generation with series S and bethesda.

But in regards to what OP said, yeah the XSS is a dud and when it comes in stock online it takes most the day to sell out. After the next gen consoles start to become readily available/demand has gone down, I foresee microsoft having a hard time selling the XSS for $300.

MS aren't emulating the old games, they are recompiling new binaries and letting you download them if you have the disc (or sell/rent you a digital copy).
Apple on the other hand have been the experts at moving their OS and software to new CPU architecture since the 90s--to the point that this ARM M1 chip in a Mac mini can outpace ryzen or intel systems that consume almost 15times the power they do under stress tells you all you need to know about the state of x86.
The nodes will not be small enough in 4 years for the series s chip and whole system to fit comfortably in a portable system like the Switch.

Thanks - are you saying that they don't use emulation on 360 games? I'm not suggesting that they would be able to shrink the Ryzen chip into a portable system.
To rephrase: Given what's available right here and now with the ARM M1 chip, could they theoretically emulate the games and performance of the Series S in an affordable ARM portable system in 4 years. I gather that they've done a considerable amount of effort with their x86 to ARM software emulation in Windows already.
This was just one of the thoughts I had initially when the Series S was announced.

they dont compile from source. they are translating the instructions. its still emulation.
most of the other console emulators on PC deploy a similar technique called dynamic recompilation, where they convert the code on the fly. some emulators like the ps3 emulator actually save the recompiled code to a binary. and you dont think they gpu isnt being emulated either?
and about apple, yea its a pretty easy thing to do when you dont have much of a software library to worry about.and the people who buy macs dont even buy them for the software, they buy them as a fashion accessory.
