GAF, help me get my Dualshock 3 working on my Win7 PC

I have an old Gateway desktop (upgraded with GTX1060 6GB and Corsair 650W psu) and the windows installation got so bad that I had to reset it to factory last week. I used to use SCPtoolkit before the reset and never had an issue.

In the week since the reset, Ive slowly been updating my PC. Im at the point where Ive got SP1, most of the major updates, .NET, DirectX, VC runtimes, Steam, etc all installed and running fine.

The problem is yesterday I tried getting my DS3 working with the PC and was met with endless frustration. I read about a DS3 driver from PSNow. PSNow doesnt work with win7 so I downloaded the standalone driver. No dice getting that to work in Steam.

I know enough about drivers that I always uninstall the drivers (DS3 driver in this case) before attempting to install a different one.

Decided to go back to SCPtoolkit and during the install was reminded that in Win7 you have to manually download and install the XBOX 360 controller driver. And I searched and searched and every single link was outdated or shady. I did download one driver that said 360 controller driver for win7 and ran the installer and got a msg saying it wouldnt work with my PC. I literally couldn't find a reliable link to the 360 driver and spent a LOT of time searching.

Normally I'd be too frustrated to bring this question up to anyone else, then I remembered GAF... some of you have to know either a better way that will actually work for my win7 pc, or at least direct me towards the 360 controller driver so I can proceed with scptoolkit like I used to.

EDIT -
BEFORE REPLYING TO THIS THREAD:

Plz do not reply unless you have a method that you KNOW FOR SURE works on a Dualshock 3 + WIN7 - or are at least willing to help me nail down this specific problem. Most (all) searches on the internet will lead to solutions for either DS4, or Win8+

OR help me find a legit download of 360 controller driver for win7 so I can go back to using scptoolkit!

DS4Windows? It should support the old DS3 too.
Steam Integrated API control support? it supports basically anything that has keys.

You need to use more words.
With DS4Windows (never heard of it) I assume its a program I can install.

But Steam Integrated API control support? If I knew how to do that dont ya think I wouldve done it already?

I remember it was a pain in the ass to set it up. So much so I decided to use the Xbox 360 controller instead, much less headache involved.

I had to install the PSNow driver on Windows 10 for it to get recognized. Worked pretty well with PCSX2.
Though like you said, it's not supported on Windows 7.
I'm seriously contemplating checking ebay or heading out to best buy for a more compatible controller. Its so frustrating that literally last week scptoolkit had been my tried and true working solution for years, and now a week later, I cant get it back.

No shit?

I assumed anyone with an access to internet could use Google.

Run things through Steam and if they aren't on Steam because you are one of these hopeless tossers who buy on EGS just add it to Steam anyway.
But DS4Windows is probably the simplest tool, if you aren't using some weird ass controller and IF the DS3 is supported.

I'm pretty sure steam will be able to handle it for you provided you've managed to connect the controller to the PC.

Incorrect assumptions, terrible reading comprehension, nasty attitude, and a POSSIBLE solution.

Better than nothing? Debatable....

Every game on my PC is a Steam game atm. This thread is about one thing - getting my legitimate DS3 to work in Steam on Win7.

You: "Bruh just use Steam API."
Me: "Gee it would be nice if I knew how to do that."
You: "Pathetic EGS tosser."

Steam SAYS it recognizes it the controller, but in controller config or firing up Dark Souls 3 there is no response. Only mouse and keyboard.

OR you're dense as a brick and gratuitously belligerent with someone who was trying to help you.

I mean, it shouldn't exactly take fucking rocket scientists to figure out: if it's plugged and Steam is running, you can use it. Worst case scenario, for some specific game you have to open the Steam overlay and pick a different default profile fitting your specific controller OR edit one yourself.

Oh I wish it was that easy. Its plugged in. Steam is up and running. Steam says it recognizes the controller. I push all the buttons on the controller and NOTHING HAPPENS. I tried big picture, controller config, none of the buttons ever do anything.

I'll look into DS4Windows when I've regained my patience.

Not to be a cock (I'm about to be a cock), but Windows 7 is rife with serious vulnerabilities. Please buy a $10 Windows 10 key from ebay and end your misery.
Its a gateway box that came out in 2011... Im pretty sure that wouldnt work with my hardware... at best that would seriously add to my misery.

This is the video that sent me down the PSNow path... IT DOESNT WORK FOR WIN7

Edited OP to say this -

BTW, anyone who suggested DS4Windows... it seems that it doesnt support DS3 and it plainly states that in Win7 you need the 360 controller driver, which is the exact problem I'm having with scptoolkit as stated in OP.

At this point I'm convinced scptoolkit is the only way to go, and the only thing standing in my way is a manual 360 controller driver download for win7. Find that for me (from a legit source) and be a hero!

I could be wrong, but I run Windows 10 VM’s all the time with 1 CPU core and 2 GB Ram and they’re perfectly functional, so I don’t think your hardware would be the inhibiting factor but perhaps I’m mistaken.

Try this you grumpy cunt:

This isn't a shop you've come into as a customer, we aren't being paid a wage to help you so we don't have to be tip toe around and be nice to you when you're rude, enjoy this help you don't deserve. No idea if it definitely works in Windows 7, go find out yourself.

I've been using a Dualshock 3 with SCP Toolkit for years, both on Win7 and 10. It works like a charm for me. Far as I remember all those years ago you have to download MotionJoy or BetterDS3 first when on Win 7. I think BetterDS3 was the best option of the two.

Yes, but like I have stated previously, a win7 install needs the XBOX 360 controller driver before scptoolkit will work. And now, that driver is incredibly hard to find. I searched everywhere for it and saw some shady download links, and the link provided in all official documentation is to an xbox.com page that i could not for the life of me find the driver on.

I'll look into the programs you mentioned though. Thanks for the input!

I thought MotionJoy and BetterDS3 came with those drivers that you need for SCP Toolkit to work, unless I've remembered wrong.

Actually just having a quick look, BetterDS3 needed MotionJoy to work as well, so might as well not bother with that and just use MotionJoy, then SCP.

Yeah after having a quick look myself Im going to try this method. Thanks again!

If you want a hardware solution I think 8bitdos wireless adapter will work with DS3 controllers.
I'll look into it. I plan on trying the MotioninJoy solution, either by itself or with SCPtoolkit. If that doesnt work, Ill start looking into grabbing an old 360 controller, or 8bitdos...

who uses a DualShock 3 when there are a dozen better options on PC tho? I already get pissed whenever I play PS3 and have to use it because the DualShock 4 doesn't work with every game!

DS4windows might do it tho. works well with my DualSense. best way is to set it up to be detected as an x-input device (xbox controller) for optimal compatibility. but I am not 100% certain that it supports the DS3

Did you have any luck with this? Broseybrose Broseybrose
Not with MotioninJoy, but I did find a driver pack that had scptoolkit and all necessary drivers in one download. And wouldnt ya know it, it was found on PCSX2.net. imagine finding what i needed on the SITE that is the HOME OF PLAYSTATION EMULATION... sometimes i do wish i was smarter.

Then I just installed latest scptoolkit from github and its been smooth sailing once again!

https://pcsx2.net/download/releases/tools.html?task=download.send&id=99&catid=37&m=0 is the page that made it possible for future reference.

FInal note, having seen firsthand the cruel joke that is the currently available version of motioninjoy, I would NEVER recommend it to anyone. Im sure it provided some kinda value back in the day, but not anymore.. at least from what i saw.

OP is trying to use a non plug & play controller, unlike the Xbox 360/Xbox One/Xbox Series/Dualshock 4/Dualsense which are.

DS4 und Dualsense are not even close to being plug and play. in order to use them in most games that are older than like 3 or 4 years you will either need Steam's controller settings (which also work with the DualShock 3) or DS4Windows.
only Xbox Controllers from 360 onwards are truly somewhat plug and play, but even here any game that's older than say 15 years will have issues

It only took me three minutes to fiddle around in the settings to get my Dualsense to work perfectly fine for Dead Space, a game from 2008.

they aren’t as plug and play as Xbox but nowadays (especially modern games which even support ps face buttons as options like monster hunter world and especially when you play in big picture mode which has native ds4/DuSe support) they’re damn close enough.
