Microsoft: Preserving classic games is 'more important than ever'

The tweet from Xbox is polite and doesn't call anyone out specifically, but its timing is quite convenient. While Microsoft recently announced backward compatible games for Xbox Cloud Gaming, Sony announced the end of the PlayStation 3 store and Nintendo killed off Mario, or at least the availability of Super Mario 3D All-Stars.

I could care less for streaming but Sony can basically do the same and put most PS3 games on PSNow.
Sony could program a PSX emulator over the course of a weekend if they wanted to, and they already have a PS2 emulator that barely anything gets released on.

For whatever reason, they don't want to support older games. If they did, they could add like 18,000 of them by Monday. (I can't believe between the PSX and PS2 there are 18,000 games lol)

Sony is shutting down the PS3 and Vita stores, meaning you cannot buy those games anymore. Meanwhile, MS has been migrating the Xbox and Xbox 360 content from the old 360 store to the modern store. Instead of shutting down the old 360 store they're moving the content to a modern platform, and the side effect of that is that you can now use Xbox gift cards (reward points) to buy 360 games when you couldn't when they were on the old store.

I know , SONY if they really wanted to make PSNow more compelling can easily add the PS3/Vita games

It seems Xbox has a different and opposite philosophy to Ryan and PlayStation when it comes to previous generations. I much prefer the Xbox philosophy. I'm still playing and enjoying so many of the games from the 360 era instead of begging for remakes in order to be able play great games like Fallout 3, Mass Effect or Dead Space.

Maybe what Ryan meant when he said "we believe in generations" was let's pretend previous generations never existed.

Your move Nintendo and Sony..

Bring back Virtual Console from the Wii/Wii U and for Sony bring back the PS1/PSP and PS2 games you have on the PS3 and Vita stores. There right there....? Just give them to me, Ill pay you?

I dont really care about the streaming but at least let me download them ffs

It's good that they published this on 1st April - some of us have good enough enough memory to remember Microsoft completely abandoning Games for Windows live store customers and leaving everyone at the mercy of developers to update their games to work at all.

Psx and ps2 era licenses are a pain in the ass they don't want or care to handle. There isn't some sort of conspiracy, they just have other business interests.

I think that Microsoft should strike while the iron is hol, just like Sony did with their infamous game sharing video back when the ps4 and xbox one were revealed.

During the next months until the PS3, VITA and PSP stores are discontinued, they should add more and more games to BC. Specially those that can only be played on a 6th or 7th gen console.

There might be some licensing issues (seperate from the music stuff that typically fucks everything up) but technically yeah, they could do it.

While this generates good will among the hardcore, BC only became important for the wider audience this gen because of digital. For MS it's a good way to increase the gamepass library I guess, but BC is almost worthless in terms of average user play time.

Good on MS though.

Things like this make me wish Xbox was my main console platform. Sony's support for old games is atrocious.

And this is why competition is great, MS can easily put pressure on Sony for BC and preservation as times goes by and they continue raising the bar. Much like I doubt MS would even bother with proper BC if they were the lead console by a mile for years and years.

They need to unlock the emulator and find a way to let you run any Xbox/Xbox 360 disc

Purposely ignoring that the games can be downloaded and played on the Xbox?
I do not ignore that in general. I am an Xbox player as well and have a good collection of (physical) Xbox games, but it is a bit strange to even discuss streaming when you want to talk about preservation.

Easy way to have substantial library for gamepass.

Especially when we have Cyberpunk/Halo Infinite situations even after a decade of development.

Games are taking tooo long to develop.

Rumor has it they are working to bring even more titles for the Series X/S but we probably wont hear anything official until summer / E3 time. Assuming we even get something official this year.

And many would downplay this as a bad thing, only because it's Microsoft and not Nintendo or Sony. I think when it comes to preserving the classic games Microsoft is at the forefront of this and Microsoft should not be ashamed of that whatsoever. In a way they are preserving history now you can argue that why is this a thing when someone can just put out their old consoles and play those games? -- And you are correct on that part but so many things can go wrong, let's say you take out your old console and it does not work what then? Not many would go out and buy an old console just to play one single old game and that is the point Microsoft is trying to make. So I'm glad they are trying to preserve these games because if history has taught us anything is that trying to play old games is something of a challenge.

I've never been much of an XBOX gamer but I am totally on board with what they're doing for BC. If the Series X ever made it so you can play Amped: Freestyle Snowboarding, I'd likely buy a system at some point just to be able to future proof that game. I have an OG XBOX and 360 but both require me to pound the top to get the disc tray to open, lol. The OG XBOX isn't too bad but the 360 is a pain, I never play it cause it freaks out my dogs upstairs, they think someone is trying to break in, lol. Funny thing is is that it's a legit 360 launch console I bought off a buddy a few years back. Somehow managed to avoid the RROD.
